Taliesin - can I use it?

Always loved this name. I didn't go through with it for my first because of my family's opinions on it, but I'm due next spring with my third and last baby and would really love to use it if it's a boy.

The only issue is, I'm not Welsh, but I do have Welsh heritage, and my surname also starts with T (two syllables, ends in ie sound and has an S in there).

What does it mean?
Use it. It’s lovely (unless it means bidet or something).

I knew a girl with the name (known as tally), different spelling..nice name! Got a few comments back in the 90s but now everyone is called names that aren't Sarah Emma, Matthew or Luke then you'll be fine.

Gemstonebeach · 19/10/2025 07:16

I would middle name it! Names like that are big for first names.

I’m not familiar with the name or the pronunciation but to me it looks like the name of a medication, sorry.

Eenameenadeeka · 19/10/2025 07:50

How do you say it?

I hate the fact that I agree. I have never heard the name but would think it’s medication, not a child

That's exactly what came to my mind too when I tried to work out the pronunciation.

TappyGilmore · 19/10/2025 07:57

I’ve never heard of it before but I think it looks very pretty. Is it pronounced as it is written? So possibly a bit like Taliban then.

springintoaction2 · 19/10/2025 07:58

Nope - but then I'm not Welsh. Do you live in Wales?

Never heard of the name, and wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce it etc.

Worldgonecrazy · 19/10/2025 07:59

It’s beautiful. English pronunciation is Tally-yay-zin. Welsh has a slightly different middle sound and somewhere between s and z. Often shortened to Tal. It’s the other name for Merlin

idri · 19/10/2025 08:00

Totally fine to use.
I do live in Wales and know of a Taliesin. They call him ‘Tally’ for short.

MummyNeedsCoffee1 · 19/10/2025 08:01

I haven’t come across it and wouldn’t know how to pronounce it, this might be something to consider

HewasH2O · 19/10/2025 08:04

It was the name of the arts centre at Swansea University. Named after a Welsh poet. I always loved it and at least it's a proper name

Allthejoy · 19/10/2025 08:04

I used to live in Taliesin Road and when I moved in I didn’t know how to say it!

Taliesin was a famous bard.

If you’re not from Wales you’re going to set her up for a life time of people calling her all sorts of random things and her having to explain how it’s pronounced and spelled.

CurlewKate · 19/10/2025 08:23

Bit difficult to carry off! I always feel for all the slight, timid young teens who haven’t haven’t had their growth spurt yet called Atlas…

SparklyCardigan · 19/10/2025 08:27

It sounds like it would be a bit too much of a mouthful with your surname, so I wouldn't use it for that reason.

Mortimermay · 19/10/2025 08:34

We know a boy named Taliesin and he's never had any issues with people knowing how to pronounce it. Its usually shortened to Tal and most people including his teachers just call him that. There is a Welsh connection within the family but they don't live in Wales. Its a lovely name and unusual in a nice way.

Needlenardlenoo · 19/10/2025 08:37

I have come across one at school (far from Wales, think we have some Welsh migration to the area possibly) and it doesn't seem more "out there" than other names.

justasoul · 19/10/2025 09:18

Frank Lloyd Wright’s studio is the first thing that comes to mind for me. I didn’t really know the name (or FLW!) was Welsh until I moved to Wales and came across the Swansea arts centre mentioned above and looked it up. I’m fond of the name and, as far as welsh names go, this is a pretty easy one to pronounce, so it’s a yes from me Grin

ScruffMuffin · 19/10/2025 12:18

Absolutely use it!

Viviennemary · 19/10/2025 12:20

Never heard of it. I dont like it very much. Wouldn't have a clue how to pronounce it.

WaneyEdge · 19/10/2025 12:22

It was the name of an engine on the Ffestiniog Railway. I think a replica still runs somewhere on a heritage railway. Appreciate that’s a bit of niche knowledge though!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 19/10/2025 12:23

I like it. A bit unusual (I'm in Wales and have never taught or met a Taliesin) but I'd go for it. It's pronounced Tal - ee - es - in.
