Taliesin - can I use it?

Always loved this name. I didn't go through with it for my first because of my family's opinions on it, but I'm due next spring with my third and last baby and would really love to use it if it's a boy.

The only issue is, I'm not Welsh, but I do have Welsh heritage, and my surname also starts with T (two syllables, ends in ie sound and has an S in there).

It was the name of the arts centre at Swansea University. Named after a Welsh poet. I always loved it and at least it's a proper name

Was about to say the same. It’s a lovely name.
Pronounce Tally-essin

DanDin · 19/10/2025 19:42

Tally-essin It's 3 syllables not 4. Tal-yes-in.

Like Iestyn (YES-tin) is 2 syllables.

Arlanymor · 19/10/2025 19:45

I'm Welsh - it's the name of the Chief Bard and referenced in the Mabinogion.

It's not a hard Welsh word to pronounce really, but even if it were, if you like it and you understand the roots then go for it.

Wynne Evans' son is called Taliesin I believe - I know of two other boys with the same name, but it's their middle name.

Three syllable pronunciation in Welsh - stress on the second syllable. Tal-YES-in but with certain Welsh accents there is a lilt that can sometimes sound as if it is extending the vowels.

It’s beautiful. English pronunciation is Tally-yay-zin. Welsh has a slightly different middle sound and somewhere between s and z. Often shortened to Tal. It’s the other name for Merlin

There is no z sound is Welsh, and no, it’s not the other name for Merlin !

Whatisityoucantface · 19/10/2025 19:49

I live in Yorkshire - there is a little boy at my kids nursery with this name. It’s lovely and he gets called Tali

Agree! I do wonder where this nonsense comes from sometimes! I do kind of get the pronunciation angle because people with accents from other countries try and speak Welsh, and that's fair enough isn't it. Much like when French people speak English and put 'z's into words!

It's not the 'other name' for Merlin - there is no other name for Merlin, unless you use the Welsh which is Myrddin. Rwy'n colli fy nhymer...!

I knew a girl with the name (known as tally), different spelling..nice name! Got a few comments back in the 90s but now everyone is called names that aren't Sarah Emma, Matthew or Luke then you'll be fine.

It's a boy's name so yes, for a girl, it would get some comments.

No, Tal - yessin.

That’s wrong. You’re missing the middle e sound.

Tal yes sin , kind of my point really.

I'm a Welsh speaker and it sounds like you're not. I'm not wrong.
It's two syllables. Tal - yessin.

It's 3 syllables @Gwenhwyfar .

  1. Tal
  2. Yess
  3. in

Yes, you're correct. It's 3 syllables.

What is wrong is "Tally-essin" suggested above.

MoreRabbit · 19/10/2025 20:07

We are in England and used a Welsh name (some distant Welsh ancestors but tbh we just really liked the name...and Wales!) - it's a pretty easy one to pronounce and we've only had positive reactions to it.

I do remember some Welsh MNers being very cross at the time though, when I asked for thoughts.

cunningartificer · 19/10/2025 20:08

Beautiful name and a real one as well!

Yes, cancel what I wrote there.

Well they're not on this thread are they?

100%.

Tanya285 · 19/10/2025 20:22

I still can't work out if it's Tally essin or Tal yes in.

I'd give it a miss personally, it doesn't help that whenever I see it all I see is Tailspin.

ClaredeBear · 19/10/2025 20:24

I know someone called Taliesin and he’s lovely. We shorten it to Tal but Tally is short for a girl.

Tally, is how I say it.

DanDin · 19/10/2025 20:25

@MoreRabbit , I mind but it's when the name gets anglicised. A lot of the names aren't easy to pronounce, and they can sound ugly to Welsh-speakers.

@Tanya285 , Tal yes in not Tally essin.
The ies bit is exactly like the ies in Iestyn.
