Will she spend her life spelling her name?

I like the name Susannah (Susie for a nickname).

However, I’m aware in English it can be spelt Susanna and also in a variety of other unique ways.

Do you think she will spend her life spelling her name for people? Is it bad enough I should forget the name?

It can be spelled with a z too but its an easy (and lovely) name to explain

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 06/09/2025 18:33

I have a name I always have to spell out. No big deal. I also don’t mind it if people spell it wrong. If you are relaxed about it, so will she.

Beautiful name.

DameSylvieKrin · 06/09/2025 18:42

“Susannah with an h” is easy enough, go for it.

user9064385631 · 06/09/2025 18:47

My sister is a Suzanne. She gets called Sue more than Susie.

mambojambodothetango · 06/09/2025 18:49

That's how I would spell it. Suzanne is a different name.

NightPuffins · 06/09/2025 18:54

I would think Susannah is the likely/common spelling of the name. It’s a lovely name, go for it!
Susie is cute as nickname too. The only one I know goes by Sanna for short (scandinavian option).

Alexandrine · 06/09/2025 19:23

Yes, she will spend her life saying “Susannah with an H” as there are quite a few famous Susanna’s too. But is it really a big deal? For example C/Katherine’s have to say “C/Katherine with a C/K” all the time and there are way more of those (not to mention all the Kathryn’s, Katharine’s etc).

Susannah is a gorgeous, classic, underused name. Personally I do prefer the simpler Susanna spelling but that’s by the by.

dybb · 06/09/2025 19:46

It’s a lovely name!

SquigglePigs · 06/09/2025 19:48

I wouldn't worry about that. I have an unusual name that I always have to spell out and it's never really bothered me.

So many names have multiple spellings- all the Kathryn variants, Claire/Clare, Eleanor/Elinor, Katie/Katy, Caitlin/Caitlyn, Robin/Robyn. Spelling names out is probably more normal than not. Even a name as simple as Jane could be Jayne!

Also Susannah is a beautiful name!

FunnyOrca · 06/09/2025 21:11

Thank you for your kind replies. I really like the name.

Both my husband and I have very obvious names that we never have to spell, so I didn’t know what it would be like but I’m reassured by the responses here.

(also C/Katherine was another option! 😂)

Yes.

Mumofsoontobe3 · 06/09/2025 21:30

It's a really lovely name and I love the spelling! My son is the same, has a nice name but can be pronounced differently and I've spent the last 5 weeks correcting people on the pronunciation. It's unique and if you like it, go for it! People she will see regularly will soon get accustomed to the spelling. 😆

Allthesnowallthetime · 06/09/2025 21:33

It is a beautiful name. I wouldn't be put off by the different spellings. Loads of names have that issue.

LegoPicnic · 06/09/2025 21:37

I have a relatively common first name that only has one proper spelling and I still have to spell my name out more than half the time as people get it confused with totally different names. I.also have a surname with multiple potential spellings.

Having experienced both, I get much less irritated with spelling my surname out as at least with a name that has lots of different variants you expect to have to clarify.

Susannah is a lovely name.

carly2803 · 06/09/2025 22:41

its a beautiful name!

Honestly opening this I thought you were going to ask above the navaeh or something

its lovely - use the name!

Snugglemonkey · 06/09/2025 22:55

I love Susanna. I wouldn't put a h on. I know 3 though, 3 Susanna and one Suzanna. They are called Susie, Suki, Suz and Zanna which I feel is a shame as Susanna is so lovely. Would a shortening annoy you?

LivingTheDreamish · 06/09/2025 23:02

I think it's a gorgeous name however you spell it. Yes she will always have to clarify the spelling but I wouldn't let that put you off.

NuffSaidSam · 06/09/2025 23:06

She probably will have to spell it out if she wants it spelt correctly. If you can be fairly chilled out about it being spelt incorrectly sometimes it will be a lot easier. If that's going to annoy you then pick something else.

BretonStripe · 06/09/2025 23:07

I think Susannah is the most popular way of spelling the name, and your daughter won't have any problems. I really like it and know of a couple of lovely Susannahs :-)

Studyunder · 06/09/2025 23:47

She might have to occasionally but there are few names that don’t ever need this. Especially as more people like to have unusual spelling and/or people are aware of this tendency and perhaps then check a spelling to avoid offence. It’s a classic name that is familiar to most. I have a common name but still have to say occasionally it’s spelt with an s…. Lots of names have alternative spellings and there’s always new versions being created.

It’s only “wrong” if you have to repeat a name EVERY time because it’s been changed to something weird for the sake of being different. Eg Anndroo vs Andrew.

Stop asking what others think as there will always be someone who criticises. Pick and stick with what YOU like for YOUR child. Tell people after the birth and let them deal with their own feelings on the matter.

Shinyandnew1 · 06/09/2025 23:53

I think you/she will end up saying, 'it's with an s and an h' which will cause all sorts of bizarre spellings!

friskery · 06/09/2025 23:55

Yes she will but so does every Catherine, Rachael, Jayne, Isabel, Claire and Muhammed.

MrsMumandWife · 06/09/2025 23:58

Lovely name and spelling.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/09/2025 00:00

A know a Susanna. She is called Su-san-ah. Not Suzanna which is what 90% of people call her. You definitely want the S sound?

Bearinthesmallmessyflat · 07/09/2025 00:01

I think that it’s fine when as she’ll just need to clarify which spelling she uses rather than having to properly spell it out
I also think Susannah is in that lovely sweet spot of classic but unusual
