Will she spend her life spelling her name?

I like the name Susannah (Susie for a nickname).

However, I’m aware in English it can be spelt Susanna and also in a variety of other unique ways.

Do you think she will spend her life spelling her name for people? Is it bad enough I should forget the name?

Not really, many names can be spelt in a few different ways so I don’t think it’s a big deal to just say “Susannah with an H”
It’s a lovely name

I have a multi spelling name, I had to spell it tbh it just trips off the tongue after a while and it really isn't a hassle,

Mumofoneandone · 07/09/2025 12:30

Have always had to spell my surname and often clarify my Christian name...... often a good ice breaker and doesn't bother me. More fun is that I'm always known by my middle name.......
Susannah is a lovely name tho and plenty of good nicknames available. Found that important when choosing my children's names.

It's a lovely name, and your spelling is the classic way.

I think this is also my concern.

Our surname is foreign, but common enough in and around London that people know there are two legitimate spellings, so ask which one.

Where we live now, it is not common and is misheard until it is spelt out. But no problem upon reading it, as our spelling is an English word too.

I don’t mind spelling out my surname but, is it a pest to have to spell out both?

I hadn’t considered the surname issue. Only you know how likely having to spell out both names would bug you (and therefore likely her).

As much as I really do love Susanna/Susannah (and C/Katherine too! 🤣) I must admit I’m grateful my parents gave me a similarly classic, underused first name, but one which I never have to spell for people (as in the majority of countries there is only one spelling) - because I do always have to spell out my surname. And to be honest I think having to do that regularly for two names would be annoying to me.

Have you considered similar Rosanna? There’s only typically one spelling for that in English. Or even just Anna or Hannah? Also names like Caroline, Julia, Lydia, Abigail, Serena, Claudia, Diana, Antonia, Louisa, Helena etc -I’d consider them similar, mostly underused classics to Susannah and they also generally only have one typical spelling in the UK.

tricky one as it is a pretty name...

but speaking as a c/katherine I deliberately gave my kids names that can only be spelled one way. while i loved my unusual spelling as a kid (and still think it's one of the prettier options), it is a pain I didn't want to pass to the next generation.

Mauvehoodie · 08/09/2025 13:08

It's a lovely name and it's one of those names that has several legitimate spellings rather than you choosing a name with a standard spelling and just choosing to spell it differently. I don't think it matters at all. I'd probably just ask how she spelt it if I met a susannah.

BunnyRuddington · 08/09/2025 13:18

I have a very common name. Think 5 in my class at school.

I still have to spell it almost every time.

Choose the name you love.

HoneyHoneyHowYouThrillMe · 08/09/2025 13:21

It's a perfectly fine name! At least it's simple and straightforward - she can just say 'Susannah with an 'h' at the end', and people are very likely to remember.

It's not out there, stupid or younique by any means.

Firebird83 · 12/09/2025 20:15

Love Susannah! I wanted to use it for DD but DH didn’t like it. We went with another Biblical ending in h instead.

Jamclag · 12/09/2025 22:42

I really like Susannah and Susie is very sweet.
And I wouldn't worry about the spelling. Two of my children have names that can be spelt in three different ways and pronounced in at least two. It has never been a problem for them. In fact I can't ever remember them complaining that anyone repeatedly spelt or pronounced their names wrong - it just hasn't been an issue and they are both well into their 20s 🤷

PennywisePoundFoolish · 12/09/2025 22:53

Susannah/Susie is a beautiful name 😍

I've always had to spell out both my names and it hasn't ever bothered me. My first name is very common for my age, but has a couple of possible spellings. My maiden name was actually very easy to spell but was uncommon which throws people off. My married name is common, but a few variations.

I'm also not bothered if they're spelt wrong (obviously I make sure correct for legal documents and bank accounts etc).

Maxorias · 13/09/2025 00:26

I have a bog standard name with only one spelling... but moved to another country and when I say my name the usual reaction is a puzzled look and a request to spell it out. It's not an issue, or even an annoyance, if anything it's an ice breaker !

CharmCharmCharm · 13/09/2025 00:28

I don’t think so. It’s a lovely name and quite easy to explain as “with an h” to most people.

AliceMcK · 13/09/2025 00:34

We’ve had to send some personalised clothing for my DDs activity back because her very simple 5 letter no other way of spelling it name was spelt incorrectly. This isn’t the first time, we’ve had it since she was a baby but because of regional accents it sounds like it’s spelt differently when certain people say the name although there is and only ever has been one way of spelling it.

My very simple again one way of spelling my name, name regularly gets random letters put in or letters changed.

i don’t think it’s a big deal spelling names, I automatically do it with all the family, but I did give 2 of my children difficult names 😬😂

TwinklyNight · 13/09/2025 00:45

My friends little girls name is Susannah, we call her Susie, and I love the name. I have only known 2 in my lifetime.

WhatAboutTheOtherOne · 13/09/2025 01:13

It’s a lovely name. I don’t think it’s a problem. It’s a normal classic name.

lemoncrisp · 13/09/2025 01:15

Beautiful name

ToTheStarsToTheSea · 13/09/2025 01:23

It's beautiful name. I have an unusual name, that people often misspell and mispronounce. Neither bother me - and you won't have the mispronunciation problem anyway.

I was opened the thread expecting some weird
made up name or spelling, but Susannah is classic and beautiful and not a name I've heard on a little one, but very much suitable. I know a Susanna (Susanna), Suzanne (Sue) and Susan (Susie) - all lovely women.
