Opinions on the name Ruben for a boy.
We also like Rowan and Harris

I'm not keen in Reuben, I always think it sounds like something you should be vaccinated for, no idea why!

Love Rowan and Harris 🙂

A name can be spelt however you want, it’s personal choice. So the correct way is however you choose to spell it. Obviously depending on the location the pronunciation maybe different but you can still spell a name how you want

It really can't.

Reuben will always be a (rather disgusting) sandwich for me, OP.

BreakingBroken · 23/08/2025 14:45

I associate it with the Hebrew faith, I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who isn’t Hebrew.

YanTanTetheraPetheraBumfitt · 23/08/2025 14:48

One of my cousins is Rueben, people do assume he’s Jewish.

I like Ruben a lot and am not keen on the others. Rowan always seems more of a girl's name to me, and Harris is a rather dull surname. Ruben is classic but fairly unusual.

Interesting as I think it's is much more a boy's names. I have never known a girl Rowan but know several men called Rowan. I think it's only fairly recently that is has been used for girls

existessential · 23/08/2025 14:57

I like it spelled Reuben. The other names are also nice, even together. Rowan Harris sounds lovely imo.

MirandaBlu · 23/08/2025 19:35

I slightly prefer Ruben to Reuben (never seen Rueben in real life); it seems more balanced and intuitive to me, but as with other names the multiple common spellings and that fact that you've chosen one that is less popular (if you're in the UK) can be an annoyance.

Rowan's a solid name and I like the association with the tree, but I'm never sure if the first syllable is pronounced like row your boat or like having a row over something.

Harris (along with Lewis) has been very popular in Scotland for the last several years and in that context is often used as a place name. I like it, but the spike in popularity means it may eventually feel closely associated with a particular time.

Firsttimebabymummy · 23/08/2025 20:21

Absolutely love it.

Like Rowan but wouldn't use it.. not keen on Harris but I like Harry.

User6761 · 23/08/2025 22:51

Love all 3 names, but I'm Scottish so Rowan is firmly a girls name for me (and the pronunciation different to that in England).

For me, Harris relates to the island, not a surname. Has similar feel to Lewis and Arran.

Reuben and Ruben are the two well established spellings - but Reuben is much more common in the UK, whereas Ruben dominates in Spanish speaking countries. I know boys with both spellings in the UK.

Busted2006 · 23/08/2025 22:55

I really like Reuben.

I wouldn’t assume he was Jewish, I have young DC so I’ve met quite a few Reuben’s at classes, none of them weee Jewish.

For me it fits in with the popular OT names
Noah, Isaac, Jacob etc

user1492757084 · 24/08/2025 09:28

All three names are fine.
My fave is Rowan.
Do you like Oban?

silverspringer · 23/08/2025 08:48

I like it and like Rowan too but not Harris.

There’s different ways of spelling Ruben/Reuben/Rueben that I’ve seen at work and I think Reuben is the correct one but actually I’m not sure and others won’t be either.

Yes, Reuben is the traditional way to spell it. My friend's grandson has it spelt that way, but one of DS's friends has recently had a baby boy and called him Ruben. I like it spelt the traditional way, but that is just my preference.

Coconutter24 · 23/08/2025 11:18

You could but why would you spell it some unique way?
You could say that about any name yet people do sometimes use a unique spelling…. Doesn’t make it incorrect
Reuben or Ruben are the usual ones.
I know a Rouban, might not be ‘the usual ones’ but it’s still correct
Rubin is pronounced slightly differently
It’s not
Rubén and Rouban would be pronounced differently
Yes because people who use Rubén tend to be in a different location

U r rong.

It's spelled Reuben. All the other spellings are incorrect.

Just because a lot of people can't spell doesn't mean misspellings are acceptable 'versions' of any given name.

Irony bypassed you then?

just cos it’s phonetic (Ruben), doesn’t make it correct.

No it did not bypass me at all.
