Sam(uel) or Jesse

Due a baby boy soon, both DH and I love both of these names. Help us decide. There are no issues with our surname with either name.

Happy for Samuel to be known as full name, Sam or Sammy and for Jesse to be know as full name or Jess.

Samuel is lovely.

ayepecking · 20/08/2025 21:21

No boy wants to be called Jesse

AudiobookListener · 20/08/2025 21:25

Jesse was a term of abuse when I was at school.

HugoYorway · 20/08/2025 21:31

Sam. Jesse is awful.

dontcomeatme · 20/08/2025 21:39

Samuel is lovely. It's on my DS list too x

RuthW · 20/08/2025 21:49

Jesse is too feminine. No one wants to be a jesse.

Moreteaandchocolate · 20/08/2025 22:00

Samuel is one of my favourite names, love it!

Jesse feels feminine to me even though I know some nice boys with the name.

CharlotteFlax · 20/08/2025 22:03

Sam(uel) is such a classic lovely name. I don't think I've ever met a bad one!

BoleynMemories13 · 20/08/2025 22:06

Samuel is a lovely traditional name. Sam suits all ages.

I just can't get on board with Jesse for a boy (love Jessica for a girl). It's a mixture of the feminine sound, and the fact Jesse is sadly a well known derogatory term for a 'weak' man.

EchoedSilence · 20/08/2025 22:10

Jesse is a great name. I love it.

SwedishEdith · 20/08/2025 22:12

Jesse definitely.

Inastatus · 20/08/2025 22:13

Samuel

Limonades · 20/08/2025 22:15

Jesse is so feminine sounding

Its also an insult, Big Jesse

Herewegoagain8 · 20/08/2025 22:21

Well I love both but Samuel is my favourite ever name. It’s DS middle name as DH wasn’t as keen and when we had our third DC it was in the running again but she turned out to be a girl.

I love Jesse too but can see the downside to that name - it’s a derogatory term where I’m from but honestly times have moved on and I don’t think it would be a big issue if it’s the name you love.

EchoedSilence · 20/08/2025 22:23

Samuel is such a dull name.

828Pax · 20/08/2025 22:25

I have both names in the family and love them both! I think Samuel is a very strong, classic name.

Mydadsbirthday · 20/08/2025 23:57

I love Jesse but sadly I don't think it works in the UK. US would be fine.

Alexandrine · 21/08/2025 00:34

Samuel. Sam sounds even nicer imo (such a friendly name) but people will usually assume it’s Samuel on the BC anyway if a boy, so you might as well give him the choice.

Jesse is still very feminine sounding to me, even though it’s becoming more widely used.

pilates · 21/08/2025 07:15

Samuel is a safe name but I do like Jesse too.

Limonades · 21/08/2025 13:23

I’m actually not keen on either - Sam is dull and Jesse is an insult

Any other names you like?

pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs · 21/08/2025 16:16

I like Samuel but love Jesse.

The comments about it not being appropriate in the UK or nobody wanting to be called that are hilarious imo - it's a top 100 name! Nobody uses the "big Jessie" insult anymore and boys these days have all kinds of names, from soft-sounding to nickname-style to modern and totally bonkers. If anybody is judging it's the parents, but I think making assumptions about what this generation of kids will think about their own or their peers' names is a losing game.

Jemimapinotduck · 21/08/2025 19:00

LOVE Samuel, but I'm biased as my wonderful (20yr old) baby boy is one 🤣

okydokethen · 21/08/2025 19:01

I like both
samuel just pips it

Derrymum123 · 21/08/2025 19:04

Jesse is my favourite.

HugoYorway · 21/08/2025 19:13

@pamshortsbrokenbothherlegs Nobody uses the "big Jessie" insult anymore
