Alternatives to Iona/Ailsa/Esther/Esme

Looking for inspiration!

My husband and I are due with our second baby soon, and are struggling with girls names. We have Scottish heritage and Iona has been our favourite for years but we might not be able to use it, as we live abroad and there are some major cultural issues with it where we live. We therefore need to find an alternative that we like as much, and are really struggling.

Names we have like but aren’t 100% sold on for various reasons are:

  • Ailsa (ideally don’t want a name beginning with A)
  • Esther (ideally don’t want a name ending “-er”)
  • Iris (feels too predictable/matchy with our son’s name)
  • Esme
  • Cassia
  • Eliza
  • Leonora

For more context

  • We are both English but with strong Scottish heritage
  • Our current son is Arthur, so we’d rather avoid names starting with an “A”
  • Our surname ends “-er” so would also rather avoid names ending in that
  • We like strong names with an established history which ideally aren’t too popular
  • We don’t want something that is too predictable or “matchy” with Arthur
  • We will likely move back to the UK at somepoint and will be based in the south east

Any suggestions? We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this and are struggling, so any input gratefully received 🙏

P.S we’ve not 100% ruled Iona out, but it really is problematic where we live and the baby will have citizenship of this country so will likely spend a lot of time here in their lifetime, so we need a strong backup/alternative to consider

I quite like Morven for a Scottish girl.

timoteigirl · 14/08/2025 16:52

Ailsa - depending where you live, can they say it? Understand how it is said?
Iris - how about any other flowers such as Bryony or Clover or Sorrel
Leonora - what about Rona?

MsSmartShoes · 14/08/2025 17:09

Estee as in Lauder is quite nice as a diminutive of Esther.

Jemima - Mima is lovely.

Intrigued as to what the issues with Iona could be?!

If you like Iona but can't use it, I know two Scottish women with what I assume are variants. I don't know them well and have never seen their names written down but they sound like:
1st lady - Eona (Eee-ohna)
2nd lady - Irona (Eye-rohna)

Ailsa and Iona are two of my favourite Scottish names. I also love Iris and Cassia from your list.

My other favourite Scottish names are:
Bronte, Eilidh, Isobel, Catriona and Fenella
Also, not exactly a Scottish 'name' I guess but I once met a little girl called Eriskay which I actally think it really cute. And plenty of kids are called Skye so why not!

WIth criteria of a strong name with an established history which has Scottish roots, works in England and goes with Arthur, the first thing that comes to me is Fiona.

If you can’t use Iona, there are some other less popular other Scottish island names - Rona, Sula

I love Iona - and agree with Leona as a good possible alternative, much nicer than Leonora IMO. I love Cassia too though. Not very keen on the other options.

Have you considered Lorna or Fiona?

Babanynamehelp2025 · 15/08/2025 16:31

Thank you so much for all these great suggestions!

I actually love Leona, though the “-ona” ending is actually the issue because it’s essentially the same as “-unt” where we are based 😅. It’s an extremely unfortunate issue given how many of the nice Scottish girls names end “-ona”.

Leona would be better than Iona though given it’s a longer word and they could easily go by Leo, or Leonie could also be a good option so I’ll also have a think about that.

From the other suggestions I also like Sadie and Isobel (though we’d prefer something less common than Isobel. I’ve also not heard of Lorna so will look into that one.

Any further suggestions or thoughts on Leona or Leonie would also be fab

Sadie is a diminutive for Sarah as another suggestion.

Fairyintheforest · 15/08/2025 17:44

How about Ivy, Elise, Nora, Evie, Oona, Enid, Freya, Aila, Thea or Skye.

UnfashionableArtex · 15/08/2025 17:46

Ilona? It's the Hungarian form of Helen.

seenitallbefore · 15/08/2025 22:15

Alba ?

Walyalup · 16/08/2025 02:17

What about Ione (rhymes with Leonie) and has the same beginning as Iona.

Enko · 16/08/2025 02:22

Not Scotish. But if Iona is a problem depending on why
how about Ilona (ilona).
In Finnish this means joy

thefirebird · 16/08/2025 02:54

Blaire, Bonnie, Etna, Paisley, Skye, Davina, Lilias, Lorna, Eilidh/Eilee, Tandie, Cora, Fia, Isla, Mairi, Rowan, Mina, Elaine, Eileen

Elara/Elora

Freya
Ishbel (Scottish version of Isobel)
Isla
Skye

My personal favourite would be Ishbel - nice Scottish connection and goes well with Arthur.
