Alternatives to Iona/Ailsa/Esther/Esme

Looking for inspiration!

My husband and I are due with our second baby soon, and are struggling with girls names. We have Scottish heritage and Iona has been our favourite for years but we might not be able to use it, as we live abroad and there are some major cultural issues with it where we live. We therefore need to find an alternative that we like as much, and are really struggling.

Names we have like but aren’t 100% sold on for various reasons are:

  • Ailsa (ideally don’t want a name beginning with A)
  • Esther (ideally don’t want a name ending “-er”)
  • Iris (feels too predictable/matchy with our son’s name)
  • Esme
  • Cassia
  • Eliza
  • Leonora

For more context

  • We are both English but with strong Scottish heritage
  • Our current son is Arthur, so we’d rather avoid names starting with an “A”
  • Our surname ends “-er” so would also rather avoid names ending in that
  • We like strong names with an established history which ideally aren’t too popular
  • We don’t want something that is too predictable or “matchy” with Arthur
  • We will likely move back to the UK at somepoint and will be based in the south east

Any suggestions? We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about this and are struggling, so any input gratefully received 🙏

P.S we’ve not 100% ruled Iona out, but it really is problematic where we live and the baby will have citizenship of this country so will likely spend a lot of time here in their lifetime, so we need a strong backup/alternative to consider

Arthur is not particularly Scottish so I think it would be weird to go too Scottish for your DD. Slightly old fashioned names like Elsie go well with Arthur. I do love Leonie though. I also like Lois.

So many great suggestions here!!

I also love Effie and Elsie, my only concerns are whether they’d work for adults as well as kids. I also like Ione (definitely closest match to Iona without the problematic “-ona” ending), Sadie, Thea, Rowan, Lois, Celia and Ishbel. Skye is also a strong contender for a middle name.

This thread has been very helpful, thank you all so much 🙏

Given the popularity of diminutive names at the moment (Freddie, Alfie, Lottie, Evie, etc), by the time today's baby Effie or Elsie reaches adulthood it won't be an issue. These names skew 'young' to us at the moment because so many children are being given them, but there'll be plenty of adults with similar style names in 10 or so years' time.

Plus shortened versions of 'proper' names have been used full names for ages without people batting an eye. If an adult introduced themselves as Jamie, Andy, Jenny, or Katie for example, I wouldn't think their name was at all inappropriate or too childish for their age.

I really love Isobel. I don’t think there’re as many of them as there used to be (I’m a secondary teacher) and this is the less usual (though best!) spelling. Isla is beautiful too.

Iris isn't even slightly "predictable or matchy" with Arthur! Is there a connection I'm missing?

I love Ione too, there’s a BBC journalist called Ione Wells and I always think it looks lovely written down.

I actually love Leona, though the “-ona” ending is actually the issue because it’s essentially the same as “-unt” where we are based 😅. It’s an extremely unfortunate issue given how many of the nice Scottish girls names end “-ona”.

What language is that?
