Katerina with Kat or kate or katie for short.

I love it - had a baby doll alled katerine which i was bought on holiday in spain. DP and i are both too english to get away with it.

My daughter is Paloma (which has been suggested already). I love it, but it gets a lot of blank stares, pursed lips and "oh, how... unusual" in Supermarkets, and "Palermo? Like the place in Italy". NO! As in Spanish for Dove. Pablo Picasso and David Bailey both have daughters with the name so I didn't think people would have such problems with it. (Lets not even discuss my mother-in-law's problems with it)

My name is Francesca and apart from having to spell it a lot, people seem to get it.

I love Miranda, Marisa, Lucia and Allegra but other MNers may wince at the poncefactor

Obviously Isabella is very fashionable at the moment and very pretty.

Claudia and Anna work in pretty much any European language which is handy.

At the Spanish playgroup I go to the popular names are more English sounding- like Matilda and Annabelle.

Anya
or Anja

Blueskythinker · 29/05/2008 17:58

I would have adored Mercedes. DH wouldn't let me though.

Mila

My daughter is called Ines (pronounced ee-nes), which I love but now we live back in the UK it is always mispronounced and I hate having to explain it all the time. But I still love it

Spanish names that work in English:

Isabella
Sofia
Leona
Silvia
Mariella
Alejandra
Andrea
Cristina
Claudia
Stefanie
Marta
Celia
Laura
Nuria

I like Montserrat (Montse for short) but it's probably a little OTT for the UK

GreenElizabeth · 29/05/2008 20:11

Ooh yes, I love Gemma. I prefer Jemma short for Jemima, but Gemma/Jemma gorgeous.

I also love Sílvia and Lídia, Giulia, Gabriela, Susannah/Susie, Allegra? I know Allegra is a bit ooh la la in UK but I love it.

Anna - how about Susannah or Johanna or Giuliana or Annabella
Isabel -
Rosa - Rosalía?
Maria - Mariella or (LOVE this) Maribel

bodiddly · 29/05/2008 20:14

I know a Rosalia who is called Lia and think that is a pretty name!

GreenElizabeth · 29/05/2008 20:14

Also, Lucia which can be Loosee-a, Loochee-a or LooThee-a.

Do you have a sexy sur name such as Piaccentini for example??
Allegra Johnstone - Poncey
Allegra Piaccentini. Oh.My.God.

GreenElizabeth · 29/05/2008 20:17

Staranise, Celia is lovely. Would that be Thelya in Spain.

Love Inés. Gorgeous. So chic.

RiojaLover75 · 29/05/2008 20:18

Christina

bikerunski · 29/05/2008 20:21

Stella

staranise · 29/05/2008 20:23

Thanks GreenElizabeth (BTW, her middle name is Elizabeth )

Pronunciation of Celia would depend whereabouts in Spain you're from (or Lat.Am) as they don't all say 'th' for 'c'. Lia is also popular, which I love, as is Laia (pronoinced 'liar' so maybe not so suitable for the UK!)

My second DD's middle name is Luz, pronounced 'Luth', which I agree is probably a bit Beckham but again, I love it, and it is 'only' her middle name.

ScaryHairy · 29/05/2008 20:23

Ilaria

geordieminx · 29/05/2008 20:25

Italian friends have Beatrice, which sounds lovely in italina - B-tret-chay?

GreenElizabeth · 29/05/2008 20:31

Luz is gorgeous too. I'm full of gorgeous gorgeous this evening and it's not just the vino.

Not at all Beckham. I'd heard of Luz. I hadn't heard of cruz til they used it. I mean, I knew it meant cross but I think Luz is too mainstream for the Beckhams! YOU are SO CONSERVATIVE TSK!!!

Ellbell · 29/05/2008 20:39

Beatrice inItalian is pronounced Bay-ah-tree-chay. I love it!

staranise · 29/05/2008 20:39

Gosh, wish I was on the vino, but am pregnant with numero tres. Not sure we can get away with another Spanish name now we're back in the UK (though I've always liked Santiago for a boy ), Wonder what the Beckhams would call a girl (Cupcake? Hummingbird?!).

Love Beatrice as well, spelt Beatriz in Spanish. Now v fashionable in the UK, no?

GreenElizabeth · 29/05/2008 20:48

There is one Beatrice in my dd's class, but I think she's the only one in the school.

What about Edith/Edie? That sounds born to be Ines' sister!

I love Santiago! I think now that the trend for names ending in O has taken over the World, Santiago is not as as it would have been 10 yrs ago!

Wdyto Bruno? Don't say bear. I wanted to call my son Bruno and I was not allowed .

GreenElizabeth · 29/05/2008 20:51

Posh wanted to call Cruz Luna if he were a girl. If she is a mumsnetter she could call a daughter taza lunar.... Is that disgusting. Sorry, I lose all judgement after a trickle of vino.

GreenElizabeth · 29/05/2008 20:52

Sorry I will stop going on about wine now. I'm just passing the time because there's nada on the tv. Some people are actually choosing a name for a BABY.

staranise · 29/05/2008 21:14

GE, do I know you in RL?!??!! Seriously, are you in London?

You made an accurate 'guess' of DD2's name...Have never heard it mentioned on MN before.

In shock...definitely require vino now

michymama · 29/05/2008 21:21

Fabiana
Tatiana
Liliana
