Maximus

I can’t tell whether it’s pregnancy hormones or not, but DH suggested Maximus as a middle name for Nathaniel the other night and I don’t think it sounds too horrible.
We were watching Gladiator which is why it came up. I’d love to give him a name which meant something to my mum but her name isn’t one with a male counterpart, she doesn’t have a middle name, her dads name has been used many times within the family etc. Gladiator is her favourite film. It feels like all we’ve got!
So, pregnancy hormones, or does Nathaniel Maximus sound okay?

Sounds great to me! Lovely name and nice meaning 😊

HugoYorway · 09/08/2025 14:01

It makes me think of Gluteus Maximus.

SailingWonder · 09/08/2025 14:03

Pregnancy hormones

Titasaducksarse · 09/08/2025 14:05

I love it but yes, I'd think of Gladiator and the famous 'my name is Maximus etc' speech every time I heard it.

What’s your mum’s surname before marriage? (sorry I hate the term maiden name) A lot of surnames sound cool/modern as middle names.

Spirallingdownwards · 09/08/2025 14:07

Just use Max. Or even Maxim at a push.

Hahaha I can’t say but I can say with 100% confidence that it wouldn’t sound like a good middle name!

It was worth a shot - mine wouldn’t sound good either

If anyone who isn’t keen on Maximus can think of a nice middle name for Nathaniel I’d much appreciate it!

As a first name, I'd avoid it like the plague due to teasing potential (gluteus maximus) but nobody out of the family is going to know what his middle name is so I don't see a major problem, other than it gives him a very long full name when filling out forms in the future.

Personally with Nathaniel I'd go for a shorter middle name, but you could get away with it.

Limonades · 09/08/2025 15:17

Gluteus Maximus!

Flower1976 · 09/08/2025 15:24

Love the name Maximus, I know someone who is 22, they had no issues with name growing up at school. It is not shortened to Max either!!

breakfastdinnerandtea · 09/08/2025 15:36

Gluteus Maximus doesn’t bother me too much. People call their kid Melena or Amelia which have much worse medical connotations!

Nathaniel...
... David
... Scott

SpottyAardvark · 09/08/2025 15:41

If you’re going to use Maximus, you may as well go the whole hog & use Decimus Meridius as well.

Well I would but I’m not sure Nathaniel Maximus Decimus Meridius Surname flows very well!

It's more when they're at school you've got to worry about unfortunate teasing potential. I doubt many kids know what those two names mean, whereas they'll definitely learn the name gluteus maximus and that'll be quite an unfortunate moment for any young boys in the class called Maximus.

Not so much an issue for a middle name but, like I said, I definitely wouldn't recommend this as a first name choice.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 09/08/2025 16:01

Nathaniel is a fantastic name and I think Nathaniel Maximus flows really nicely as a full name.

I understand the concern, but Nathaniel is an absolute, so Maximus is simply a middle name.

I’ve also had people say about teasing potential about DDs name (on here a few years ago) but I’ve seen it recommended recently on here as a beautiful name (which it is). She’s also never had a single incident of people teasing about her name.

As I said, it's fine as a middle name.

I can't comment on the teasing potential of your daughter's name as I have no idea what it is and, most importantly, her age (pre-schoolers tend to have far less problems with names than teenagers).

I agree, I don’t think I’d do it as a first name. Especially since DS is a bit weedy and I think Maximus would be maybe a bit too strong for him, as I’d imagine it would be for this one too!
As for DD, she is a teenager haha! But she has nice friends, I don’t think any of them would take the piss out of her for it.

I'm glad she's had no problems so far despite some thinking her name might be problematic. It's definitely not friends you need to worry about at secondary school though. A good friend should hopefully never tease but other kids that age can be bloody horrible.

PistachioTiramisuLimoncello · 09/08/2025 16:55

I much prefer Maximus to Nathaniel actually.
