Maximus

I can’t tell whether it’s pregnancy hormones or not, but DH suggested Maximus as a middle name for Nathaniel the other night and I don’t think it sounds too horrible.
We were watching Gladiator which is why it came up. I’d love to give him a name which meant something to my mum but her name isn’t one with a male counterpart, she doesn’t have a middle name, her dads name has been used many times within the family etc. Gladiator is her favourite film. It feels like all we’ve got!
So, pregnancy hormones, or does Nathaniel Maximus sound okay?

I love Maximus.

Nathaniel is lovely. Maximus as a middle name is fine since it has meaning to you. Teasing potential doesn’t really matter so much with middle names. I do far prefer simple European Maxim though.

But you could also consider asking your Mum what her favourite boys name is and using it for a middle? (as even if you’ve got brothers there might be a name she always wanted to use but couldn’t for whatever reason).

I really like Nate although not very keen on Nathaniel. I think Maximus is too big and stuffy a name to give a kid. It wouldn't be my choice. If you're going to use it then I'd just use Max which is much better. Otherwise I think James runs well with it.
I remember a friend of mine getting married and they read out his middle names and they didn't suit him at all. I think it would be hard to carry off Maximus for the average child.

Thanks all.
The 3 names suggested as alternatives (David, Scott, James) all don’t work for one reason or another, but happy to hear further suggestions if there are any!

I think Maximus is brilliant as a name, works.
I also love the sentimental side, there will be a lot of names but one that has link and meaning for your mom and yourself, will mean more. I know its different but it reminds me of Harry Potter too, Lumos Maxima...

VelvetAndPVC · 10/08/2025 08:02

Maximilian? Instead of Nathaniel

MollyRover · 10/08/2025 08:18

Maxim was on my list, I like it 😁

Pelvicpaininthebum · 10/08/2025 08:19

Maximus is lovely. Don't listen to people on here, if you like it and it has meaning then go for it.

HugoYorway · 10/08/2025 15:19

@Pelvicpaininthebum , OP asked ...does Nathaniel Maximus sound okay?

VeryQuaintIrene · 10/08/2025 15:28

I love it!

101Alsatians · 10/08/2025 15:30

I have one,so a bit biased :D

It suits him beautifully,he usually goes by Max or Maxy with family.

It also blends in well with where we live, where their version is Maximos so it's never a 'tricky one'

Calliopespa · 10/08/2025 15:58

Another one here who immediately heard Gluteus Maximus.

It's the number of syllables and the Maximus coming as a second name.

That said, I don't like Maximus at the best of times, but in this instance I don't think it flows at all well.

I think both Nathaniel and Maximus call for shorter companion names.

I do quite like Nathaniel but would go for something like Nathaniel James, Nathaniel Edward, Nathaniel Max if you must have a Max in it, but why honestly do people like these Maxi, Maximus, Maxim, Magnus, Max names that sound like an upsized meal deal at McDonalds?

Just tell your son when is older what Maximus means in Latin. Then if at any future time someone tribes to tease with the gluteus reference he can tell them what it means and how there are many things described as maximus.
Personally I think it’s a great combination you have there — distinguished without being over the top.
Good luck to you and the wee man

@Pelvicpaininthebum , OP asked ...does Nathaniel Maximus sound okay?

Yes, I know.... I answered the question...?

HugoYorway · 10/08/2025 22:16

But if you think the OP should ignore the answers why bother answering?
Why would someone ask if not to get opinions?

user1492757084 · 11/08/2025 10:21

Nathaniel Maximus
Nathan Max
Maximus Neil
Nathaniel Max

The OP asked the question, not me. I'm saying not to listen to opinions, that if she likes it and it has meaning to her then that is what is important, not strangers' opinions. As an aside, I think it is lovely.

Lincolnlemons · 17/08/2025 20:21

It doesn’t sound like Gluteus Maximus to be but as an alternative, how about Maxwell?

PurpleChrayn · 17/08/2025 20:29

Wow. No. Absolutely not.
