Unusual just means outside the top 100...

well if Elizabeth and haribo go for it then it's the start of a trend

addictedtoharibo · 28/05/2008 17:19

I'll get it in the top 100 - you'll see. Once the story of the cat it was named after hits the evening news, hormonal mums everywhere will be using it...

Slubberdegullion · 28/05/2008 17:20

MN is always ahead of the meeja anyway.

sorry Elizabeth for Sparky hijack

beaniesteve · 28/05/2008 17:22

Roscoe

GreenElizabeth · 28/05/2008 17:25

I like these names but I want to see what kind of a pasting they get, so I'm throwing them out there

Valerie, Melanie, Jillian

Roscoe is nice, like that. Richie, Glen, Gordon??

Heathcliff
Linton
Hareton
(Wuthering Heights fan)

VictorianSqualor · 28/05/2008 17:39

rufus and clara

Ellbell · 28/05/2008 17:40

OK... just did a quick search on some of my fave names and can suggest

Ellen
Joy
Cressida (that may count as a tad poncey in some quarters, though)
Gregory

(dd2's name is there; dd1's is in the top 100 but in the 80s)

GreenElizabeth · 28/05/2008 17:40

No that's poncey. If they were from a Danielle Steele novel that would not be poncey.

Peter is a non-poncey but unusual name.

OP posts:
GreenElizabeth · 28/05/2008 17:43

Good list Ellbell, apart from Cressida. The arm flies off the ponce scale with Cressida I'm afraid.

Ellen, Joy, Gregory, Victor, Peter, Jillian, Valerie, Melanie, Richie.

I'm compiling a list of approved-non-poncey names for mumsnetters.

(I've gone off Gordon in the last 2 minutes)

Hatrick, I'm sorry but your names do not make it on to my list either. Miranda is Ponce Personified.

Gail is pretty actually. Gael less like part of Abigail.

OP posts:
Ellbell · 28/05/2008 17:48

Jennifer
Tamsin
Rosamund
Rosalind (both of those can be shortened to something more popular but less poncey - Rose, Rosie - but you can have the long version for 'best'!)
Corbin (probably a bit poncey, but sounds 'solid' not airy-fairy)

Hmm... Cressida could be poncey, I know. I knew one when I was little and she was lovely (and quite ordinary) so it doesn't 'feel' quite so ponce-tastic to me.

Twinkie1 · 28/05/2008 17:50

Reuben is my fave name although DH said we couldn't call DS that because it was too Jewish!

Elliot is nice too as is Harriet for a girl.

but Gael is like Gaol

What about anything anyone was named in the 70's, you know, normal names!

GreenElizabeth · 28/05/2008 17:52

Reuben is a great name. No more Jewish than Ben or Nathan. Anyway, Jewish names means names from the (Old) Testament. Tell your husband!!

Reuben definitely makes it on to my non-poncey-pre-approved names list.

GreenElizabeth · 28/05/2008 17:53

Jennifer if totally non-poncey but it's non-interesting too. I hope nobody has a baby Jennifer. Unlikely, but sorry to anybody who does.

What are everyone's friends' mums called? (To avoid naming your own mum and causing identity discovery...)

GreenElizabeth · 28/05/2008 18:04

Beatrice, Gloria and Hyacinth. ONE of those names is my mum's.

My friends' mums are called Margaret, Helen, Carmel, Noreen, Patricia,
