Unusual just means outside the top 100...

I have three friends with mothers called Elaine. They are also all 60 this year.

claireybee · 28/05/2008 18:08

Ghislaine, Kerenza, Dorothea, Martina are all mums I know with more unusual names

JaneHH · 28/05/2008 18:14

Having asked the question I'm now struggling to think of the names of the my English friends' mums... [durrbrain] (I emigrated to Holland years ago) Sorry.

I think a lot of the names our mums were given will come back once everyone's got fed up with Frogmella-equivalents (!) What do you think?

JaneHH · 28/05/2008 18:15

(how do you pronounce Ghislaine? I've always wondered)

My mum's friends (not the way round you asked for but I can't remember my friends' mum's names) are

Margaret, Iris, Brenda, Barbara, Pat, Cilla, Joy, Valerie, Kathleen, Audrey, Anthea, Joan.

Ellbell · 28/05/2008 18:18

Reuben is a nice name, but it's in the top 100 I'm afraid (about number 90). So is Elliot.

Jennifer is the Cornish version of Guinevere. (I'm assuming Guinevere is too poncey!)

What about Morwenna, while we're on the subject of Cornish names?

JaneHH · 28/05/2008 18:24

Am liking Morwenna!

Evenhope your list of names is so spot on for post-war mums. Weird that I actually can't imagine any baby being named any of those these days - but then who would have thought 10 years ago that we'd have the relative merits of Alfred etc being discussed on Mumsnet...

But GreenElizabeth are we helping in your quest?

claireybee · 28/05/2008 18:26

I've heard it pronounced with both a hard and soft G in France (depending on the region). The s is silent. The I know pronounces it Gillan though

claireybee · 28/05/2008 18:27

(That was in reply to the Ghislaine question btw-started typing then got interrupted!

JaneHH · 28/05/2008 18:30

Oh right! So it is French-stylee then. Like it! Though I can imagine anyone called that has to spend every waking moment spelling it to people.

SniffyHock · 28/05/2008 18:35

Mary, Sue, Diana, Jill, Kay, Kath, Kim, Anne are all Mum's friends.

Trevor, David, Alan, Frank, Martin are Dad's friends.

My parents were born in the forties though so if you want more 70's -
Lisa,
Rebecca,

Samantha,
Carol,

Kevin,
Steven,
Nicolas,
Mark,
Daniel,
John are some that spring to mind that I went o school with.

evenhope · 28/05/2008 19:25

David, Paul, Peter, Derek, Jim, Robert, Nick, Philip, Gary, Tim, Richard, Stephen.

puppydavies · 28/05/2008 19:31

ghislaine pr gill (as in fish) en (as in engine).

GreenElizabeth · 28/05/2008 19:37

Sue is horrible and Janet is horrible, But I like Susan/Susie and I like Jane and Gillian, Kim is OK too. Helen/Ellen nice. Linda is OK but really like Belinda. Julie is OK don't hate it.

From the boys' I love Peter, Robert, Tim and Richard. Not ready for Gary yet! Paul is dull but I love Saul. That's not poncey at all.

These are all good names......

ShowOfHands · 28/05/2008 19:39

Colin or Laybeeyah

SniffyHock · 28/05/2008 23:31

If you like Belinda what about Melinda - I know a woman named that and she's called Min for short which I think is lovely. Also, Susanna shortened to Susie is sweet.

ButterflyMcQueen · 28/05/2008 23:44

Hatrick lol

Miranda 'ponce personified' methinks not ....i know two and i am one - we are none of us poncey!

susannah is lovely

EachPeachPearMum · 28/05/2008 23:51

Hmmm, I am 'unusual but not poncey'?
Interesting...

MrsJohnCusack · 29/05/2008 00:08

I don't think Miranda is poncy AT ALL. But then ponciness is clearly a matter of opinion.
my DD's name is a LONG WAY outside the top 100 but I expect it's poncey. I'm not saying it but it's on my profile. I like to be poncey anyway

ButterflyMcQueen · 29/05/2008 00:15

delectable mrs jc!!!!

MrsJohnCusack · 29/05/2008 00:18

Thanks!

might put up a couple of newer pics of the gruesome twosome as well

ElvinaFrizzell · 29/05/2008 00:52
