Winona/Willow Winter - Alliterative?

gotellsomeone · 26/07/2025 18:36

We are currently really drawn to alliterative names for dd3 with the surname Winter. (Other dc don’t have alliterative names)

options are:
Winona Winter
Willow Winter
Winnifred Winter
Wilhelmina Winter

If we go with Winona or Winifred it’s likely she will end up being Winnie Winter which I do still think is cute but others could think is too silly?

alternatives we like:
Violet Winter
Sylvia Winter
Magnolia Winter
Vivienne Winter

thoughts or suggestions?

Willow Winter is lovely

PanderBare · 26/07/2025 18:38

Winifred is the usual spelling.

Winifred is the usual spelling.

You’re right and we would use that spelling. I misspelled it thinking of the nn Winnie which is what we would use if we chose that name.

I think Winona is a really lovely name and doesn't have to be 'Winnie' - but I think Winnie Winter is a bloody cool name anyway!

Moreteaandchocolate · 26/07/2025 18:47

Willow is my favourite of your “W” names. The middle name is less important- Willow Winter is fine.

I love Vivienne Winter 😊 Violet Winter is nice but does sound a bit like violent winter.

Ivy Winter
Verity Winter
Evelyn Winter
Lola Winter
Rosemary Winter
Mabel Winter
Florence Winter

Winona Winter is legendary, I love it so much!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 26/07/2025 18:54

I think with a name like winter it's best to avoid an adjective first name - colours etc. So that would cross off magnolia and violet for me. Also know 2 people called violet and they both hate it to the point they go by their middle names.

Winona makes me think of Winona Ryder and her shoplifting spree! But maybe not an association for younger people?

I like Vivienne, a lot. And Vivi is nice.

I don't like winnifred or wilhlemina at all. And the wi wi of the first and last name doesn't feel nice to say, to me. Willow winter doesnt feel as clunky though for some reason. I like it, but if she's on a list alphabetical by surname (like a register / company directory, etc, she'd be winter willow which is a maybe a bit off?)

Maybe out of left field, what about Rosalie?

OrsolaRosso · 26/07/2025 18:55

I actually think that Sylvia Winter sounds beautiful!

JulietSierra · 26/07/2025 18:56

I love your surname! I love alliterative names and think Willow Winter is fab. Not keen on Winnie…too witchy for me

EmmaHarte · 26/07/2025 19:00

Or changing it up to something warm like Scarlett Winter (realise that loses the alliteration).

LucasBuck · 26/07/2025 19:13

I love Wilhelmina Winter! Wilhelmina is so underused considering the great nn’s (Willa, Billie or Mina) and the popularity of boys William. Winter or Winona Winter are nice too - I lean towards Winona more as I like the flow of 3 syllable then 2 syllable.

(I know a William whose surname starts with a Wi- and I love his name btw as I think alliteration really makes a name stand out).

Winifred Winter also sounds great, I only hesitate as I really dislike the nickname “Winnie” because childish me always thinks “the Pooh”, “The Witch” or “Windy Winnie” in my head when I hear it🤣 I think the name is getting more popular though, so obviously most don’t think like that! (And I personally think that Winnie is less of a “given” nn for Winona than for Winifred for some reason btw)

Gemstonebeach · 26/07/2025 19:16

Winona Winter is my favourite, I love Winnie Winter, I like Willow too but not with your surname.

Sylvia/Sylvie is also lovely.

LucasBuck · 26/07/2025 19:21

*sorry that should say “Willow” is nice too!

MelonElla · 26/07/2025 19:26

I wish I was called Sylvia Winter, it's a great name

Hatty65 · 26/07/2025 19:30

Don't call her Winona. It's not really a name - Winona Ryder was named for her place of birth, a bit like Brooklyn Beckham. Unless you have a connection with Minnesota I wouldn't!

Cinaferna · 26/07/2025 19:32

I love Vivienne Winter.

The alliteration is fine but maybe Win Win is a bit much.

KeepOnKeepingOn25 · 26/07/2025 19:35

Having looked at a couple of standard names lists online there were none I saw that do justice to such a lovely surname as Winter!

I would go research Celtic names OP, there are some less known but really beautiful sounding W names. Like:

Wannore, Wannour (feminine) forms of Jennifer
Whiltierna (feminine) faol-tiarna, "wolf lord." Ancient Irish name.
Wira (feminine) a popular Celtic name, "gentle." Variants: Wera, Werra
Wren (unisex) Old Welsh: Ren, "great chief, ruler." Variant: Wrenna
Wynstelle, Wysandra

I love Winona Winter and Wilhelmina Winter.

Winona could be Win, Winnie, or Nona.
Wilhelmina could be Willa or Mina, or even Billie.

Actually, Winifred would be nice too. Freddie would be a sweet nn.

Willow Winter is making me think 'Will o' the Wisp'.

It's a real name. The placename in Minnesota is based on a Lakota word for oldest daughter, and while unusual, Winona Ryder is not the only bearer of the name.

TimetoGetUpNow · 26/07/2025 21:19

I love Willow

W names for girls are quite limited. Other ones that might go with your fab surname:

Ursula Winter
Rosalie Winter
Tabitha Winter
Grace Winter
Harriet Winter
Eliza Winter
Dolores (Dolly) Winter

VerityUnreasonble · 26/07/2025 21:21

I quite like alliterative names, my DS has one, makes me think of superheros somehow.

Not a huge fan of Wilhelmina - partly because I want to shorten it to Willy and Willy Winter isn't great. The others are good though (I recognise Willow is also a Will sound but it's the Will-he that makes me want to shorten it that way, even though it's not pronounced as 'he')

I like Violet Winter too.

Wrenna would be a nice name, or Wisteria maybe (as an alternative to Magnolia).

PrayMore · 26/07/2025 21:21

Wyona Willow

Lazy56789 · 26/07/2025 21:21

Just FYI Ivy Winters is a drag queen so may want to be careful with that one

Blueberrycake12 · 26/07/2025 21:23

Why not Winter as a first name? I love it so much.

Blueberrycake12 · 26/07/2025 21:24
