Are there any nicknames for Oliver, other than Ollie?!

Oliver is a lovely name but one of the most popular boys names currently, if you name your baby Oliver there will likely be another 5 in his class.

When I was in school we had 5 Becky's in the same class and they absolutely hated it, they were Becky S, Becky P etc

I do understand what you mean - when I was at school we had 5 C/Katherines in my all girls class of 28 (luckily a couple went by Kate or Katie, but yes surnames had to be used too).

But I agree with those who’ve said things have changed so much and the popular names just aren’t used with such high frequency anymore. I suspect even in an all boys prep/public school (where the “classic” popular boys names tend to be used more often than the average imo) - there is unlikely to be more than 2 Olivers in a class at most (or 2 Thomas’s, 2 Williams, 2 Georges etc). 5 in a class of any name would be a real statistical anomaly these days, thankfully.

So I wouldn’t let popularity put you off using it OP -for example at my DC’s primary school, there’s not currently a single Oliver! There tends to be more Theo, Leo type names, but rarely more than 1 per class- it’s just bad luck if a name does get repeated.

My Oliver has always been the only Oliver in his year at nursery and school classes.

My eldest had no Olivers either.

Apparently Olivers used to be called Noll, just as Eleanors were called Nell and Edwards called Ned. You could do Noll or Nolly?

Love that!

I’ve got a grown up Oliver. I call him Ollie, his dad calls him Ol, his brother calls him Bairn (grandparents from the north east), when his brother was a toddler he called him Lobbiler because he couldn’t pronounce it correctly and when he was tiny I called him Oliver Boo or Ollie Bob, his school friends called him by his initials (so many Olivers) and he calls himself Oliver at work. I’m biased but I think it’s a gorgeous name.

hoochun · 28/07/2025 21:00

My Oliver is usually a full Oliver but within family Olio and Olipop. He is not an Oli.

ivegotthisyeah · 28/07/2025 21:28

My Oliver is Ollie or Bob or Bobbie , even had Bob on some of his sports shirts 🤣 is stems from Ollie Bob

DiscoBob · 28/07/2025 21:31

Lolly, Liv, olakzander, ollington, Ver, olive, pizza, curly, jonjoe...

It could be anything really. You need to meet the kid first and it will come naturally.

Ilovemyshed · 28/07/2025 21:58

In a custom dating from medieval times, people used to add an affectionate “mine” before first names starting with a vowel, and they often dropped syllables as well. Thus “mine Oliver” led to “Noll”;

ARichtGoodDram · 29/07/2025 21:16

Ooh I like that 😁

I thought it was quite witty for a bunch of teenagers tbh 😂

mnahmnah · 29/07/2025 21:18

My brother, who is now 43, is Oliver and has only ever been called that. Occasionally he might get Ol, but even his mates and playing footy etc, it was still the full Oliver.

I did, however, spend our whole childhood calling him Orville!

FlibbertyGibbitt · 29/07/2025 21:19

My Oliver is;
olive
blob
ollie
ol
ollinge

if he gets called Oliver he knows it’s serious. 30 next year 🤣

tartyflette · 29/07/2025 21:23

autumngirl714 · 29/07/2025 21:25

A nickname can be literally anything. It doesn’t need to be related to the given name.

I know a VW 😂 started as Olly, somehow went from that to Ollo, to Polo, to VW. Started as a drunken joke nearly 20years ago and has well and truly stuck!
