Are there any nicknames for Oliver, other than Ollie?!

It always fascinates me the amount of pregnant women who come on here pre planning nicknames. Forcstarters, a shortening of any names such as Olly for a Oliver isn't a nickname, it's just a shortened names. Secondly, nicknames tend to evolve spontaneously and often bear no relation to the child's name and are just cute pet names. Thirdly, nicknames tend to evolve naturally when you're interacting with your baby. Irl I've never heard of anyone planning a nn prior to birth.

Who pissed on your cornflakes?

FettleOfKish · 25/07/2025 21:38

Our Oliver is mostly Oliver but occasionally Oli, Ol, Ols, Olive, Pickle or Goose. I know an Oliver whose friends call him a nickname which is a contraction of Oliver and his surname.

99spottysocks · 25/07/2025 21:44

Olliebobs is one that randomly happened which turned into bobsy 😂😂

LucasBuck · 25/07/2025 22:04

In theory, Ori or Lev is a definite possibility since all the letters are there in Oliver - and I think they sound much nicer nn’s (perhaps because they are used as names in their own right). But you’d have to introduce it from Day 1 I think, as Ol/Olly is definitely the go-to.

Oliver Boliver Butt after Dr Seuss’s Too Many Daves

I call my Oliver 'olipops' too 😊

I also have a Noah and his nickname is noodle and I honestly don't even remember why or how it started

Ooh I like that 😁

PrincessOfPreschool · 25/07/2025 22:32

Mine is Bobby/ Bob, which is short for Olly-Bolly which is short for Oliver Boliver Butt (Dr Seuss) or Obbly Bobbly. He also gets called Olstonian for long.

PrincessOfPreschool · 25/07/2025 22:33

Ps. He's 19 🫣

Oliver is a lovely name but one of the most popular boys names currently, if you name your baby Oliver there will likely be another 5 in his class.

When I was in school we had 5 Becky's in the same class and they absolutely hated it, they were Becky S, Becky P etc

I work with children and haven't had an Oliver for several years. It is popular but had way more James, Harry, Louie, Raffy and Riley.

sunflower85 · 26/07/2025 11:19

My Oliver was just plain old Oliver until the daycare started calling him Olly and he really took to it, so he is Olly now, which at home then became Ollywoo, Olliveevee, then Veevee, Veevs, and Sir Veevington 🤣

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 25/07/2025 12:04

Olls
O
Olive
Liver

but seriously, nicknames evolve naturally over time. As far as diminutives go, no, not much choice from Oliver really!

I nearly spat my coffee out at Liver 🤣🤣

There were 3500 Olivers born in the UK in 2023 and over 20,000 primary schools so it would be an extraordinary fluke to have 5 in the same class at the same school, unless it’s a particularly Oliver-dense area.

Times have changed since the Christophers and Rebeccas that dominated the 80s and 90s. In 1996 the most popular 2 boys names were given to well over 10,000 kids each. In 2023 the most popular two didn’t reach 10,000 between them.

(I’m interested in name trends and data).
