Calling daughter husband's Ex's name?

Nearing the end of my pregnancy and don't know the baby's sex

Have a couple of nice options for boys but really stumped for girls names that we agree on!

There is one girl's name we both like but it happens to be the name of my husband's significant ex.
It's a very common timeless name (think like Charlotte or Emma) so it isn't closely associated with her but his family and close friends will be aware of the link

If it makes a difference, they were together a few years long distance but didn't live together, ended amicably due to different goals in life. They stayed friends initially (I've met her a couple of times) but have gradually stopped and are no longer in contact beyond the odd birthday card etc

I personally am not bothered by the association at all, but will other people think it's weird?
Should we ask her "permission"?

I don't think I would. Just after having a baby is quite an emotionally difficult time and I wouldn't want anything that could make that worse. I'd keep name hunting. If it's quite a timeless name then maybe there are others in a similar vein? Can you name change and start another thread and ask for names with a similar vibe or sound to Charlotte (or whatever the name is)?

This.

How you feel now, vs how you could feel weeks pp when you might be feeling very overwhelmed, unattractive (feeling NOT being) and everyone already knows the name, are two very different things.

Not weird to use the name but asking her implies youd be naming child after "her".

Reallyneedsaholiday · 16/07/2025 14:16

I don't think you need to ask her permission. If it doesnt bother "you" then it's noone else's business tbh. People give their children their names for any number of reasons, favourite book characters/ place of conception/ close relative, and if it's a common name people will suspect it's after anyone BUT the ex. Ultimately all that matters is that you and your partner love the name.

No way would I use that name!

There are literally thousands of names to choose from, definitely no need to use the name of your partner’s ex!!

BoleynMemories13 · 16/07/2025 20:46

Incredibly weird. I'd seriously question why anyone would want to name their kid after their ex.

It doesn't matter how popular/classic it is. To everyone who knows him, that's his ex's name. Weird with a capital W I'm afraid.

Firsttimebabymummy · 16/07/2025 20:52

Definitely don't ask her permission.

Pick a different name.

JillyGiraffe · 16/07/2025 22:05

Which names do you like, but not love? Maybe we can suggest some :)

EmotionallyWeird · 16/07/2025 22:09

I wouldn't have a problem with it, especially as it's not an unusual name. You don't need to ask her "permission" but you could, if you like, give her a heads up that you will be using that name.

My youngest daughter has the same name as my husband's ex. I adore the name... it is also a lovely timeless classic name.

If you love the name @MaryBeardsBeard then use the name. People might make an association at first but very quickly it will just be your beautiful daughter's name and no-one will think twice about it.

Wishing you all the best with the rest of your pregnancy ❤️

Definitely wouldn't use the name! I'm sure you can find another you will like just as much without the awkwardness
