Thinking of Hermione for a girl's name but wondered if it was too pretentious? Any views?

MrsWeasley · 26/05/2008 20:09

Well I wasnt going to say anything bad was I? Love Harry for a boy too

Seriously I love Hermione (the name) it is a beautiful, beautiful name.

Whooosh · 26/05/2008 20:12

Lovely

MARGOsBeenPlayingWithMyNooNoo · 26/05/2008 20:18

I loved it for years and years - then Harry potter came along and made it popular.

Wemma · 26/05/2008 20:33

Thanks for all the positive vibes so far!

I like it too as long as your last name isn't granger then its a keeper for me too

constancereader · 26/05/2008 20:35

I would have used Hermione, but my sister got there first. I think it is lovely.

cupsoftea · 26/05/2008 20:37

Lovely

Fanella · 26/05/2008 20:37

I like it too, and it's more likely to be pronounced correctly these days thanks to HP!

kitsmummy · 26/05/2008 22:58

I think it's the most beautiful name in the whole world. Would have had Hermione or Clementine for our bump if my husband didn't have a say in the matter!

BigBadMouse · 26/05/2008 23:03

I think it is an absolutely beautiful name and not at all pretentious.

Only issue I can think of is what would it be shortened to - because there are always people who feel the need to shorten a name whether you want it shortened or not (not that I have an issues with that myself... )

janeite · 26/05/2008 23:04

My little brother thought it was Hermy-oh-knee when the books first came out!

It IS a nice name - and for a child not born yet, the HP connotations aren't likely to stick.

I also really like Yolande, which I have always thought is of a similar vibe. I've never met one but there was a Yolande in an Enid Blyton book I read when I was about 7 - wish i could remember what it was!

CantSleepWontSleep · 27/05/2008 09:02

It's a lovely name but I'd be put off by the association with HP.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 27/05/2008 09:11

I don't think it's pretentious, but it just doesn't sound v nice to me. I like Yolanda.

Amandella · 27/05/2008 09:35

Oh I like it!!

spongebrainbigpants · 27/05/2008 09:57

janeite, Yolande appeared in the Put-Em-Rights!

Love the name Hermione but I'm a huge HP fan and know I'd be ribbed mercilessly if I used Hermione or Harry for any of my children.

I'm expecting a boy, maybe I should call him Draco?!

MrsBadger · 27/05/2008 09:57

rofl at the thread title

Nancy66 · 27/05/2008 11:19

Lovely name. Very pretty

jingleyjen · 27/05/2008 11:21

before Harry potter - Yup Lovely...
Not sure now there is the association.

MrsWeasley · 27/05/2008 11:25

spongebrainbigpants: NO stop there if you call him Draco he will be BAD!! Bad I tell you!

How about Arthur, fred, george, bill, charlie, sirius, Remus. All perfectly normal everyday names or play safe with James or maybe Brian.

Sorry CantSleepWontSleep you seem to have a typo in your post I think its meant to say encouraged by not put off by

Hulababy · 27/05/2008 11:26

I like the name Hermione. onyl thing that would put me off these days is because of the Harry Potter link, although that has not affected the popularity of Harry as a name.

dividedself · 27/05/2008 11:32

DD is Hermione

Shortened by various people to 'miney' 'ermi' and we call her 'err-mi-on' sometimes as we lived in France for a bit and that's how they pronounced it at school there.

She is m ore often called rhubarb due to middle name Ruby
