Kit is going to be a big sister. What do we name him/her?

We're expecting our second baby in January but don't plan to find out their sex until they're here. We didn't find out with our daughter Kit and LOVED the surprise.

We struggled last time with boy names. I REALLY wanted to name a boy after my favorite musician Cab Calloway in some way. While he liked our picks last time he does want more of a say this time. I feel bad about how pushy I was so I'm willing to give him more of a say. So now we both have lists because our tastes in boys' names differ.

His list (in order)
Boone
Shepherd
Hawkins "Hawk"
Hawk

I like (in order)
Abe
Gus
Clark
Dex
maybe Dexter "Dex"
Last time we agreed on Calloway "Cal" or Calvin "Cal". I would still love to use something based on Cab Calloway, but I'm thinking of suggesting it as a middle name once we agree on a few first names.

We both want something that is less unisex and more masculine for a boy. Sometimes people assume that Kit is a boy because of course. It's always people who don't know her and just see her first name. I'd like the name to be a little more old-fashioned, and I do like nicknames as given names. Do you have any suggestions that we can both agree on? Our last name starts with U so nothing starting with a F or P please.

The girls' names we like are very similar. Last time we'd had our hearts set on Charlie/Charley but then it was like EVERY other kid we ran across was "Charlie". So we started over and found something we both loved.

This time (in order) we like
Georgie
Gwen
Wynn "Winnie"
Lyle
Dell or Delta "Del"
Desi
Bee (our preferred spelling)
Birdie
Tillie
Ginger

We also considered Lennie Kathryn last time but I'm not sure if we could use Lennie this time because to me it sort of "belongs" to Kit. If that makes sense. My husband says why not because he still really likes it. What do you think?
Opinions and suggestions welcome.

Our daughter is Kit Lenore U....
Thanks

Not Birdie with Kit. Or Ginger.

FrenchandSaunders · 15/07/2025 06:27

Kit Lenore U?

CrownCoats · 15/07/2025 06:28

Your boys names are much better than your partners. His are all surnames and sound very American.

Your girls names are almost all shortened versions of actual names. Do you know what Desi means?

If you choose Lyle everyone will assume she’s a boy (as they understandably already do with your daughter, Kit).

Cheeseplantandcrackers · 15/07/2025 06:29

Dexter and Winnie are nice.

Not keen on your Dh boys names and would stay away from another three letter name.

ScrewedByFunding · 15/07/2025 06:34

Kathryn nn Kat?

Enko · 15/07/2025 06:40

Hawkins Calloway would be a brilliant name.

I love your dhs picks prefer them to yours.

Not keen on Georgie from the girls list and also think she will have people assuming she is Georgia with Georgie being the nm. Unsure if that matters to you.

I like the rest of the girls list especially Desi and Delta.

RichPetuniaAgain · 15/07/2025 06:43

I’d definitely have your tribute to Cab Calloway tucked away as a middle name, otherwise you’ll have a Kit and Cab(oodle)😁.

Kit Lenore and ..

Hawk Shepherd U
Gus Calloway U
Catriona Gwen U
Lyle Winsome U

Holdonforsummer · 15/07/2025 06:46

Kit’s a girl?

ClunkyPigeon · 15/07/2025 06:46

Are you in the US? I think your answer will probably influence replies

Chellybelle · 15/07/2025 06:50

Your husband's choices are awful particularly Boone and Shepherd. Don't do that to a child.

This.

anon2022anon · 15/07/2025 06:54

As much as I like Lennie Kathryn for a girl(I like the Leni spelling), its almost the same name as Kit Lenore when lengthened (Lennie Kat Vs Kit Lenore).
Lena is similar and pretty?
I know of a Wren who has Birdie as a nickname. I like Delta from your list, Stellar maybe?

Boys names I'm not a fan of your partner's list, I think Boone in particular links to a current singer. I like Dex from yours. Lex/ Alexis?

I completely second this. I would go with Gwen, Tillie and Gus.

TwoToots · 15/07/2025 07:13

As you pushed for your own way last time and he has only a short list I’d have Hawk. The rest are sillier and I like an unusual name. Boone is really terrible. Maybe he should change his own name to Boone.

HectorPlasm · 15/07/2025 07:15

Damn, someone beat me to the Kit Kat joke.

BananaCaramel · 15/07/2025 07:17

All of your husbands names are awful so you were right to give him less sad! Boone? Hawk?!! Please don’t use either of those

I also think that Winnie is a dog’s name these days. It’s been taken a bit like Luna which is a shame.

I like Bee but I think it should be short for something - Beatrix, Berenice, something like that. Georgie is also cute.

Why not pick George/Georgie for a boy or a girl?

InternationalHulaClub · 15/07/2025 09:20

Winnie and Delta for a girl. Abe and Dexter for a boy. I wouldn't do Ginger as a given name for a human.

HugoYorway · 15/07/2025 09:27

Boone - baboon
Shepherd - it's an occupation
Hawkins "Hawk" - too surnamey
Hawk - I might get used to it

Abe - ok if short for something
Gus- ok if short for something
Clark - no
Dex maybe Dexter - ok

Georgie - fine
Gwen - ok
Wynn - it's a surname. Winnie is nice, use that instead.
Lyle - awful
Dell or Delta "Del" - how about Lenovo or Wizz?
Desi - look up the meaning
Bee (our preferred spelling) - ok
Birdie - awful
Tillie - Tilly is the usual spelling
Ginger - awful

Snorlaxo · 15/07/2025 09:37

Hawkins- Are you Stranger Things fans?

You can’t use Desi as a name! It has an actual well known meaning
I wouldn’t choose Bee but Birdie could be called B

Relaxd · 15/07/2025 09:41

Husband names with the exception of Hawk all sound a bit pretentious and unless a solid back story like it’s a great grandfather or something then it just always looks like the parent trying to pick something original. Obviously see what suits the baby when he or she arrives, but having a few options is sensible too.

As you’ve asked for views on your list, these are all not too commonly used (although why that matters if you really like the name I don’t know!)

His list;
Hawk but better perhaps as a middle name,

Your list
Gus ( best of the bunch, consider extending to Angus or August, the latter could be unisex)
Cal (personally I prefer Caleb as an extension, an old name that shortens to your preference)
Wynn (you also could consider extending to Winnifred, to Winnie or Freddie)
Tillie (extended to Matilda or Tilda)
Charles or Charlotte for Charlie as lovely perfectly fine and traditional names, in US Chuck is actually a common shortening for Charles which is quite fun!

Others ideas …
Jacob could in theory shorten to Cab as a family nickname
Aubrey - unisex
Morgan - unisex
Quincy (Quin) - unisex
Fox - unisex, a great middle name
I also like Amos and Cecil as older but still not too commonly used names if that is a key concern.

WitcheryDivine · 15/07/2025 09:59

I’d just be aware of not accidentally having two animal names that start to look like a theme unless that’s what you specifically want. Kit is a kitten but also of course it’s a name for baby animals of other species as well (internet tells me badgers, ferrets, foxes, rabbits, squirrels, ferrets etc)

Boone - no
Shepherd - animal related but could work, Kit and Shepherd sounds like a Cotswolds clothing brand to me but it’s ok
Hawkins "Hawk" - hawk and kit sounds a bit like a bloody scene from a nature doc
Hawk - as above

Abe - fine
Gus - I don’t like it but it’s fine
Clark - fine
Dex - Dex and Kit is quite cute

Georgie - fine
Gwen - cute
Wynn "Winnie" - fine
Lyle - just makes me think of syrup or a villain in a western
Dell or Delta "Del" - I like Delta not Dell it’s too well known a brand
Desi - this means people/things hailing from India AFAIK?
Bee (our preferred spelling) - definitely an animal set but quite cute, maybe erring on the cutesie side and you might have teens wanting to change their names to Audrey and Ruth
Birdie - as with Bee
Tillie - ok
Ginger - Kit and Ginger sounds like you wanted cats but accidentally got pregnant instead.

Personally I’d go for Dex (or Dax?) for a boy and maybe Delta for a girl? I wonder if you have Kit and Gwen or Kit and Birdie that Kit might feel she has a boy’s name as her sister’s is much more girly. What about Bridie for a girl? Blaise for a boy? Lennox for a boy?

Nannyfannybanny · 15/07/2025 10:01

None of the above, also assume American

changedusername190 · 15/07/2025 11:59

bryony or bronte?

Limonades · 15/07/2025 14:30

I like Quinn or Amos for a boy!
