Kit is going to be a big sister. What do we name him/her?

We're expecting our second baby in January but don't plan to find out their sex until they're here. We didn't find out with our daughter Kit and LOVED the surprise.

We struggled last time with boy names. I REALLY wanted to name a boy after my favorite musician Cab Calloway in some way. While he liked our picks last time he does want more of a say this time. I feel bad about how pushy I was so I'm willing to give him more of a say. So now we both have lists because our tastes in boys' names differ.

His list (in order)
Boone
Shepherd
Hawkins "Hawk"
Hawk

I like (in order)
Abe
Gus
Clark
Dex
maybe Dexter "Dex"
Last time we agreed on Calloway "Cal" or Calvin "Cal". I would still love to use something based on Cab Calloway, but I'm thinking of suggesting it as a middle name once we agree on a few first names.

We both want something that is less unisex and more masculine for a boy. Sometimes people assume that Kit is a boy because of course. It's always people who don't know her and just see her first name. I'd like the name to be a little more old-fashioned, and I do like nicknames as given names. Do you have any suggestions that we can both agree on? Our last name starts with U so nothing starting with a F or P please.

The girls' names we like are very similar. Last time we'd had our hearts set on Charlie/Charley but then it was like EVERY other kid we ran across was "Charlie". So we started over and found something we both loved.

This time (in order) we like
Georgie
Gwen
Wynn "Winnie"
Lyle
Dell or Delta "Del"
Desi
Bee (our preferred spelling)
Birdie
Tillie
Ginger

We also considered Lennie Kathryn last time but I'm not sure if we could use Lennie this time because to me it sort of "belongs" to Kit. If that makes sense. My husband says why not because he still really likes it. What do you think?
Opinions and suggestions welcome.

Our daughter is Kit Lenore U....
Thanks

Scout

I used to know a Kit and a Pip (both boys) but I love Pip for a girl. My friend named her daughter Pipp after her father, Philip, passed asay while she was pregnant. I like Pip and Scout for boys and girls.

Moreteaandchocolate · 15/07/2025 19:05

I love Abe and Dexter “Dex” for a boy (or Charlie)

And I love Gwen for a girl. (I also love Georgie as a nn for Georgia)

How about

Max
Zac
Jem (Jeremy / James)
Nate
Heath
Zeke
Rex
Toby
Ozzy
Asa
Otto
Roscoe

Girls

Tess
Liv
Nell
Marnie
Josie
Libby
Wren
Romy
Cleo
Effie
Lottie
Pippa

I like Gus & Dex

Gwen is my favourite from your list.
How about Della or Peta?

Starbri8 · 15/07/2025 20:21

How about,

Arden, Blaise, Blake , Dara and Rori for a girl.

Dane, Max, Quinn and Shea for a boy

Starbri8 · 15/07/2025 20:23

I know a few Catherine’s who’s nick name is Kit quite common in Ireland

NightPuffins · 15/07/2025 20:50

Given that you already have a Kit I don’t think you can pull off Cab or variations because of the saying “Kit and Caboodle”.

My suggestions are:
Kit and Blake for a boy
Kit and Eden for a girl

I love Kit for both sexes btw but if you have a Kit that’s not short for Katherine or Christina etc, then I’m not sure why you don’t just use cool Cal as a stand one name for a boy too? Kit and Cal make a cute sibset imo - yes okay they are matchy in style but different initials and they still sound different enough not to be confusing when shouted up the stairs etc imo.

Not kind on your husbands choices, sorry too “out there” for me - but I quite like Clark and Dexter is okay (rather than just Dex as I think people will assume Dexter anyway) and instead of old man Abe, I love similar Bram? Based on your style, you might also like Heath, Hal or Jem too?

Not keen on most of your girls choices as again, they sound more “out there” than Kit to me (apart from Tilly as obviously there’s loads of those and Georgie but I dislike it’s juvenile sound). However I do love cool Gwen - I’ve never understood why it’s so underused. Delta or similar Della? also might be okay (Del alone sounds a bit computer for me). You might also like Tess, Vita or Willa?

Shepherd? Really?

HugoYorway · 15/07/2025 22:57

Get down, Shep!

Purpleballoo · 15/07/2025 22:58

Kathryn then you can have a Kitkat

butterfly0404 · 15/07/2025 23:04

Dexy
Rex
Nina
Ramona
Sonny
Sasha

ThisCatCanHop · 15/07/2025 23:04

The first two girls’ names I thought of before I opened your post were Marnie and Tilda. But that was before I realised Kit was a girl!

My favourites from your list as Gus and Hawkins for a boy and Gwen for a girl.

Shenmen · 15/07/2025 23:10

How about Minnie or Heidi (hi dee hi Dee hi Dee ho) 😁

ilovepixie · 15/07/2025 23:50

Kat

Howdoesithappenlikethis · 15/07/2025 23:51

Kit and sally sound good together

ChocolateGanache · 16/07/2025 08:21

Georgie
Tilly / Tilda(Matilda)
Gwen
Calvin

These are the best from your list op.

StarlightBlues · 16/07/2025 17:40

Is Kit short for anything.. I only ask because I think if not I prefer the shorter names like Dex rather than the longer ones.

I like Boone, Dex/Dexter and Cal/Calvin.
I just googled Cab Calloway and his full name is Cabell which I like too.

Girls I like Delta, Gwen, Georgie & Wynn.

Other ideas - Abel, Asa, Jesse, Brooks, Wyatt, Blake, Sol, Casey, Tate, Remy

Josie, Cassie, Vada, Blair, Emerson, Quinn, Nell, Pearl, Romy, Roni

I do like Lennie too but prefer Leni spelling for a girl.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 16/07/2025 17:59

Please don’t call her Lyle or Birdie or Ginger

marshmallowfinder · 16/07/2025 18:18

Coco, Cleo, Sorrel, Fawn, Clover
Asher, Asa, Jasper

Dmsandfloatydress · 16/07/2025 18:35

In assuming you are American I would say that you really won't benefit from the views of a mainly British audience. Typical American names are considered rather down market in the UK and with most of Mumsnet leaning towards a middle class demographic they will lean to more Conservative tastes.

2025ismybestyear · 16/07/2025 18:41

Gosh.

HugoYorway · 16/07/2025 19:16

I think @Dmsandfloatydress meant conservative with a small C.

You could use a Conservative name.
Kemi, Boris, Rishi, Jeremy (but use it for a girl), Cameron (unisex), Suella, Gove (unisex), Tebbitt (unisex), Thatcher (unisex), Eden (unisex), ...

hattie43 · 16/07/2025 19:20

I only know Kit as a boys name . I’ll be honest I wouldn’t choose any from your list . It feels like you’re trying to hard to be different which is all very well but your child will have to live with name for life . Unless of course they change it when older .

user1492757084 · 15/07/2025 06:45

Kit Lenore and ..

Hawk Shepherd U
Gus Calloway U
Catriona Gwen U
Lyle Winsome U

Not Catriona, then they’ll be Kit and Cat! 🍫

TizerorFizz · 16/07/2025 23:04

Reading this - if I’m ever a grandma I’m going to explode if my DDs choose these names! We like unusual or less used names but some of these are just a joke. Poor child!
