I’ve always loved Nicholas - it’s not too old-fashioned, though, but I don’t know any young Nicks or Nicholases.

I love Jem as a nickname too - but prefer it for classic James.

For myself, I’ve never understood why John dropped out the Top 100 - it’s a simple classic with lots of great historical namesakes. Robert, Christopher and Matthew were a bit of a surprise drop outs too. And I agree I’d like to see classics like Peter, Paul and Phillip come back instead of being Dad/Grandad names.

A bit surprised people have mentioned names like Michael, Adam, Daniel, David etc though as apart from Adam those names have never dropped out of the Top 100 in England at least (and Adam is Top 10 in some boroughs of London) - they all all still fairly popular, just not as high in the charts as 50 years ago.

I work in a school, and have recently encountered a little Kevin, Eric, Austin, Spencer and Trevor. I guess some of the bearers of these names are now grandparents, so they're coming back round again.

I really like Amos. I'm always surprised it's not more popular given how popular Noah/Jacob/Joseph are.

I honestly love many of the names already mentioned, particularly Christopher, Nicholas, Simon, and Stephen! Adding Geoffrey, Graham, and Sean.

Not sure how I forgot Nicholas! The youngest one I know is in his late twenties/early thirties, but he's not from the UK so I'm not sure whether his name is perceived as more on trend in his home country.

Perhaps both Nicholas and it's counterpart Nicola being popular in the 80s/90s has put this generation of parents off it, as they associate it with their contemporaries?

Yes, it does fit that vibe doesn't it? Not sure why it's not more popular tbh. It has a strong history, and I don't think it was ever particularly overused. 🤔

In fact there was a boy called Colin in my class at primary school. No one batted an eyelid. It was just his name.
