Estella?

I posted a while ago asking for opinions on the name Flavia. Turns out my partner doesn't like it, nor any of the other 20ish names I suggested. So I made a new list and the only name he had a positive comment for was Estella. He actually said he had been thinking of Estella or Stella, but I immediately shot down Stella because I know my sister's immediate association will be the lager and I just can't get that out of my head.

What do people think of Estella? Still too close to Stella or does the extra E help?

I don’t like it at all but I’m sure many will think it’s ‘cute’ as it means star.

FloraBotticelli · 24/06/2025 08:07

I associate it with Pip and Great Expectations. It’s pretty but a bit feels a bit heavy for a baby - a name to grow into.

2chocolateoranges · 24/06/2025 08:07

For me Estella is too close to the Spanish beer Estrella.

much prefer Stella.

Ellmau · 24/06/2025 08:07

Estella is very pretty. Immediate association is Great Expectations.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 24/06/2025 08:08

Unfortunately for many people Estella is forever associated with the character in Great Expectations who has been brought up by Miss Havisham to treat men with disdain.
What about Elisa if you like Italian names/want an Italian name?

Stella is also a beer though - Stella artois

I love it, was on my list but my DH wasn’t keen. I also had Phyrne and Ariadne which he didn’t like either but I loved.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 24/06/2025 08:10

I think most people will think of Great Expectations. I guess it's for you to decide how comfortable you are with that association.

It doesn't have to be Italian but does need to be pronounced roughly the same in English and German. I already have an Eliza in the family and my partner also rejected Eloise, which is pretty close to Elisa 🙈.

😂 Stella is literally a very famous beer and Estella is not

Estella is nice.

Also Estelle and Stella.
Maybe you would like..
Adele
Gabriella
Fotini
Aster
Ester

Adele is his cousin (named for their grandmother). I suggested Adelyn but he doesn't like it.
I have a cousin named Esther (I have a large family including 19 first cousins so a lot of names are "taken").
Estelle is pretty but Estella works better with the surname.
Not a fan of Gabriella or Fotoni. I would also prefer 3 syllables max as the surname has 4 syllables. Gabriella's followed by a 4 syllable last name feels a bit too long! (That's also why I ruled out Emilia, plus the fact that it's getting super popular here and there's already a baby Emilia at my three year old's nursery).

Ella?

Enko · 24/06/2025 08:34

Estella is a beautiful name. I would go for it if you both like it.

Ella?

Ella is literally everywhere here - I've met 3 under 3 in the past week. Plus my cousin just named her baby Ella!
Every girl here seems to be called Mia, Mila, Ella or Sofia/Sophia. Linnea is getting really popular as well.

Stella is much closer to the Stella Artois beer than Estella with Estrella 😂

im not a fan of either though. Too harsh sounding.

crossstitchingnana · 24/06/2025 09:28

i think beer.

Orphlids · 24/06/2025 09:29

Estella is gorgeous. Sophisticated and elegant. I’d like to be named Estella.

Shabanimother · 24/06/2025 09:34

I love it 💓

MammaTo · 24/06/2025 09:35

Estella reminds me of the beer Estrella. Maybe Estelle.

Estelle is pretty but doesn't flow with the surname, and would be pronounced Estell-uh in German anyway.

I am not a fan of Estella (I also prefer Stella).

Marina
Astrid
Fiona
Agatha (would be Agata in German)
Gerda
Matilda
Cora
Elisabeth (slight pronunciation difference for the "th" but not material enough to make it feel like a different name ) or Elisabeta

Mulledjuice · 24/06/2025 09:59

Beata
