Thank you - some great underused names here!

JillyGiraffe · 22/06/2025 08:23

Love Calvin and Gregory!

BiscuitBotherer · 22/06/2025 08:27

Wilf! I love that name. I’m past baby making age but there are some good potentials here for our next dog. 😅

FlightCommanderPRJohnson · 22/06/2025 08:55

Surprised to see Stuart on the list - I thought that was a timeless classic.

LividVermiciousKnid · 22/06/2025 09:00

My kid's name is on here. And Edgar made it pretty far down the shortlist.

Deliberately. As a teacher of many years every name has an association!

(Though weirdly my guilty pleasure name, that I might have chosen if single, is on the girl list but not this one and I'm relatively sure it'll have under 50 - Zephyr)

mum2jakie · 22/06/2025 09:13

Some great names! Surprised Gene is so underused - I think it fits well with current naming styles?

Abner reminds me of the neighbour from Bewitched.

Saul, Beck and Callan are all really usable.

Zebralie · 22/06/2025 12:14

I’m surprised that Stuart, Quentin, Gregory and Jeremy are on here as I know quite a few teens/boys with these names.

There were 50 babies called Jeremy in 2023, so it only just made the list!

The other names were given to:
Gregory - 27
Quentin - 15
Stuart - 11

Does anyone know if middle names count for these lists? Reason I ask is my daughters have my maiden name as a middle name - it's in this list - but only started appearing as a name on lists after I had given it as their middle name.

Good question! I just had a look at the data set and it says it's compiled from first names recorded at registration. So middle names wouldn't count.

Straightomyhead · 22/06/2025 13:15

Well my little boy born in 2023 is Howard Stuart so I feel this is an accomplishment (and exactly what we wanted from a name)

and to add we call him Howie.

Edited

I was just going to say Howard is a brilliant name! And who wouldn't love a baby boy called Howie?

Edenmum2 · 22/06/2025 13:51

Always loved Dustin

Wow. I thought Cormac would not be there.

The list seems shorter for the boys. Is the overall list of names used for boys usually less varied (fewer names) as for girls?

No, just first names (and exact spellings, so names like Isabelle, Isobel, Isabel and Izabel are all listed individually).

Otherwise Rose, May, Mae, Grace and Louise would be the girls top 5, and James would forever be the number 1 for boys lol.

Yes, the top boys names always receive far more registrations than the top girls names. There is much more variety when it comes to girls names. People seem to be more adventurous in general when it comes to naming a girl, whereas more tend to stick to the classics when it comes to boys names.

The girls list always has more movement too. Far less of the current top 100 for girls were there 10 years ago, compared to the boys list. The boys list in general has a lot more classics which just don't move from the top 100.

Strange the baby boy name I used in 2023 isn’t on the list at all 😂

If a name is registered fewer than 3 times in a year it gets omitted from the data to preserve confidentiality. So if the name you used isn't on the long list that I linked to in the first post, only a maximum of two babies were given it that year.

Love Cedric, Cyril and Sol from this list.

Maybe I just like names beginning with an ‘S’ sound!

I was wondering if it was to do with it being too low! That makes sense.
I wonder if he has any namesakes that year at all then!

MikeRafone · 22/06/2025 17:54

Nigel isn’t on the list, yet 5 boys were named Nigel in 2024

MikeRafone · 22/06/2025 17:55

Ah it’s from 2023 when no bits were named Nigel!

There's thousands of different names with between 3-50 registrations, so I only posted a small sample. The link on my first post will give you the full list, but it looks like the name Nigel was given to 5 babies in 2023

So Gary isn't making a comeback then!
