What do you think of the name Mack?

I haven’t really heard of it before the tv show Molly and Mack, is it a name on its own? I like it but don’t want to be too out there. Just thought it might make a change from Jack. Or no?

Jack is lovely ❤️.

Chavvy and common

AnneMarieW · 18/06/2025 22:26

Very cool and film noir style. Lovely as a nickname for the fab Welsh Macsen or I suppose any of the “Mac” surnames (like MacGregor, MacAlister etc) which are probably used as first names these days, just like all the “Son” ones are now in English (Jackson, Harrison et al).

My only hesitation with it might be a lifetime of people mishearing it as Max. But if you aren’t bothered by that, then I think Mack is great.

Its ok as a nickname.

Stick with Jack.

Op may not be bothered but 'Mack' might be.

I'd better tell my dad he is a chav!
He'll be horrified!
He is 84 with impeccible manners and a lovely man!

Different for an older generation, but every second boy is named Jack now.

BatchCookBabe · 18/06/2025 22:34

Ghastly. 😖

They were way back then as well. Go into my local pub and there's more than a few of the old boys called Jack!
Its just a solid , no frills name, not to be sneered at .

oustedbymymate · 18/06/2025 22:35

I love it. But then I taught a lovely boy whose name was Mac (he was a Mckenzie)

BatchCookBabe · 18/06/2025 22:35

zaicandy · 18/06/2025 21:21

Chavvy and common

LOL, no it's not,. 😆 What a daft comment. (And I have no skin in the game, as I don't know any Jacks...) Jack is a good name. Certainly not 'chavvy and common!'

Liamsrightbrow · 18/06/2025 22:35

Absolutely love it! Go for it

boysmuminherts · 18/06/2025 22:35

Really? I don't know any Jacks at all. May have been popular 2-3 decades ago. But not now really.

EDITED to say I have just googled this, and yes indeed, Jack has been on the top 30 'most popular names in the UK,' list pretty much every year for the past 20 years, and it's nearly always in the top 5. I stand corrected. I just don't know any Jacks weirdly!

Still a nice name for a boy though. Smile

Viviennemary · 18/06/2025 22:36

Dire.

Rainbow1235 · 18/06/2025 22:41

Needspaceforlego · 19/06/2025 10:00

Op what about Mark ?

softlyfallsthesnow · 19/06/2025 10:04

Only if you also have a Mabel.

Try Max instead.

Plantladylover · 19/06/2025 10:07

the knife

teksquad · 19/06/2025 10:10

Why do people keep saying Mack the Knife and other old song references? nobody under the age of 50 will know or care about these old songs, certainly not a kid born now called Mack. And do all the legions of Jacks care about Jack the Ripper? Or parents of baby Lily-Roses worry about Rose West? Or the mumsnet approved Juliet worry that she killed herself?

Its silly on these name threads when middle aged people immediately leap to an old song or serial killer with a certain name. You can find negative connotations with pretty much every name if you try hard enough, but modern day kids really dgaf. Or will come up with some worse nickname you had never even considered.

Longdarkcloud · 19/06/2025 14:23

@colachive Surely that would be Muck. Mick would be the Aussie way.

OP why not use a Mac surname such as Mackenzie and shorten that to Mack?
(Ignoring the fact that some Scots have another way of pronouncing MacKenzie).
Or does Rick appeal? Or Zack

augustusglupe · 19/06/2025 14:27

Yes sorry, first thought is Mack the knife.

greencartbluecart · 19/06/2025 16:17

When a general question is asked People over 50 are actually allowed an opinion even if it’s at odds with other people / the glorious youth

teksquad · 19/06/2025 16:47

Nobody said you're not allowed an opinion. I am pointing out that name associations are generational, and yours wont mean anything to a child born now.
