Would you find Eira difficult to pronounce?

Hi!

DH and I are on our third and final baby (our third girl 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣)

We both love the name Eira (eye-ra) but I am unsure with how known it is in England? (Where she will be raised)

Would you struggle to pronounce the name?

Would I be saddling her with a life of teachers mispronouncing her name in the register?

There is the possibility of spelling the name Eyra - however that technically is a misspelling of the name, so I am only willing to do so if Eira is very difficult for everyone.

Thank you all in advance!

I live in England know an Eira. Go for it. Beautiful name

Newnamesagain · 10/06/2025 09:24

I've come across a couple and not heard of any issues with pronunciation.

DifficultEggs · 10/06/2025 09:24

It’s not difficult at all, but non-Welsh people may pronounce the first syllable to rhyme with ‘hay’ rather than ‘high’ until they’re told otherwise. It’s up to you whether or not this bothers you.

BastardesEverywhere · 10/06/2025 09:27

Eira is fine.

I think you'd have more issues with Eyra tbh...my mind goes towards an 'Ayyy' (rhyming with Hay) sound with Eyra.

user7843209785 · 10/06/2025 09:27

I think I’d read it as Era, my brain doesn’t see the i never heard the name before.

SlipShodSue · 10/06/2025 09:28

Pretty name but I’d have guessed it was era

mysecretshame · 10/06/2025 09:28

I would say it as Air-a if I wasn't told otherwise but I didn't know it was Welsh.
I would obviously pronounce it correctly now that I know.
It's very pretty.

StMarie4me · 10/06/2025 09:29

I read it as Eye-ruh then checked online and seems to be correct. So think it would be ok. It’s a gorgeous name!!

The Welsh word is not 'Eye-ra'. The Welsh name is pronounced Eira (Welsh phonetic pronunciation). Non-Welsh speakers say Ey-ra or Eye-ra,

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 10/06/2025 09:32

I would read it as "ear-a", I'm afraid, because the only person I've ever known with that name pronounced it like that.

AmyDuPlantier · 10/06/2025 09:33

I’d have assumed air-a but once people know they know 🤷‍♀️

I've never heard of it before, I said it like ear rah in my head before I read the comments.

I think people you told the name to verbally wouldn't have an issue as they'd hear you pronounce it, but you'd potentially have a problem in waiting rooms ect but even then it's just a simple fix. And maybe on the school register occasionally but again, just correct people and it's done. My DD's name can be said wrong sometimes, she isn't bothered.

Not the same, but my name can be spelt with the same letter once or twice, people often spell it wrong and it's easy enough to correct people, doesn't bother me

edited to add its a lovely name OP

PlasticAcrobat · 10/06/2025 09:34

It's a lovely name. I've never come across it before and my instinct was to read it as pronounced as Ira (i.e. eye-ra)

Sinkintotheswamp · 10/06/2025 09:35

I'd assume it was Era too.

Oh really! My DH is Welsh and he’s always pronounced it Ey-ra.
Thats something to think about then if he’s been pronouncing the name wrong 🤣

There is the possibility of Ira - however I am aware that spelling is masculine and there is obvious negative connotations with the letters.

I'd have said eye ra

Most people you meet you say your name outloud to, and it's not difficult to pronounce

Some people may get it wrong if they see it written down first, but it's easy enough to correct.

Winter2020 · 10/06/2025 09:41

I would have pronounced it Era like "the end of an era" but if you told me it was pronounced Eye-ra I wouldn't have any further problems.

I was reminded of Iris which is also pretty.

Sunnyatlast25 · 10/06/2025 09:44

I thought the Welsh pronunciation was Ay-ra.

I just checked on YouTube and it’s Ay-ra on there too.

Not Ira!

MonaChopsis · 10/06/2025 09:47

The Welsh pronunciation is different in different regions... Very broadly Ay-ra in North Wales, Eye-ra in south Wales.

It's a beautiful name, OP, and while you might have to correct people initially, they'll be able to pronounce it correctly once they know.

My Aunt is Eira, and Welsh, originally from mid-Wales. It's always been pronounced Eye-ra by her family.

@Factor50sun , she's lived in England for the last 40 years, I've just asked her if she gets many issues with the name and she say's no, occasionally people will ask how to pronounce it but they generally get it right if they guess.

DanDin · 10/06/2025 10:06

The pronunciation of eira doesn't have an exact equivalent in English. It's like ey-rah, but the r is in the first syllable, not the second.

Eira is also a name in other languages, so the pronunciation presumably depends on the person.

@VimesandhisCardboardBoots , I said the Welsh word not the name. Smile

Welsh is phonetic, and if it was eye-ra, it would be aira not eira, @MonaChopsis .

PizzaSophiaLoren · 10/06/2025 10:09

In wales and have known a few.

Pronounced either:
eye-ra
ay-ra

Aw lovely, thank you so much for asking her!

DanDin, you have to be the most recognisable poster on here. You could change your name daily and I'd still know it was the same person.

Sigh.

Regardless of the pedantry around what SHOULD be the correct pronunciation of Eira, in my part of South Wales it's pronounced Eye-ra. Even by the Welsh speakers! A short drive down the road into the next county and it's sort of somewhere between an eye and an aye.

Op, I have a very unusual Welsh name that nobody gets right first time. Its not really an issue, people have a stab, I politely correct them and all is well. I say go for it if you like it. These days there are so many unusual names around she could well be in a class full of kids who's names are tricky to pronounce initially.

Soubriquet · 10/06/2025 10:14

I automatically thought Eye-ra so it’s not too bad.

But then I also thought of Ira, the old man’s name
