Hi!

DH and I are on our third and final baby (our third girl 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣)

We both love the name Eira (eye-ra) but I am unsure with how known it is in England? (Where she will be raised)

Would you struggle to pronounce the name?

Would I be saddling her with a life of teachers mispronouncing her name in the register?

There is the possibility of spelling the name Eyra - however that technically is a misspelling of the name, so I am only willing to do so if Eira is very difficult for everyone.

Thank you all in advance!

i think that us Welsh are less exposed to different ethnic communities than the English Generalisation.
Welsh could mean someone in a Welsh-speaking community in a sparsely populated rural area or a multi-cultural built-up urban area in a large city, and so on.

As I said earlier, I thought that too but in these days of multicultural communities no one turns a hair at an unusual (to them) name.
It depends on what multicultural means in that context.

Pedant alert!

I live in England know an Eira. Go for it. Beautiful name

Same. I assumed boy for ages though (only heard about Eira in the other class so hadn’t met her). Because I’m sure Ira is a boy’s name?

Eira doesn’t do much for me tbh, blends in with all the Isla, Avas, Adas but it less pretty imo.

I'm Welsh speaking and have lived mostly in North and Mid Wales, and work closely with colleagues from the SW. I'd say I'm familiar with most accents apart from South East.
The PP is right that the Welsh word eira is pronounced similarly throughout Wales. However, Eira the name is not always pronounced the same.a
I have encountered plenty of Eira, Eirlys, Eirian, Eirwen, Eiry, Eiddwen etc.
Most people use the Ei rhymes with bay pronunciation, but a significant minority use Ei rhymes with bye. So I would consider either of these to be valid.
What I have noticed in terms of mispronunciation is that lots of English people can't add an "r" to the sound, so they will pronounce the Eir syllable to rhyme with hair, or fair rather than hay-r, fay-r.
So Eira would get mispronounced as Air-uh.

In terms of mispronunciation it's really a case of your attitude. My child has a Welsh Rh name, and I'm totally fine with English speakers being unable to say it. I avoided Ll names though because the mispronunciation of those really grates on me.
