Poppy or Florence

We are trying to choose a name for our baby girl and like the names Poppy and Florence. She will be a little sister to Jack and Harry.

We love Poppy but worry it may be a little cutesy for an adult. We also really like Florence, which seems elegant and mature, but don’t love the nicknames Flo or Floss/Flossie. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Florence. I like Poppy but I consider it more a cat name as that was the name of my first cat.

Rainallnight · 10/06/2025 09:23

We have a Florence and just don’t do any of the nicknames. She also makes clear to anyone who tries that she doesn’t answer to any of them!

Ceramiq · 10/06/2025 09:23

Flora rather than Florence - it's much less likely to be shortened to a nickname.

Poppy is fine as a nickname but it's a bit unserious as a name in itself.

Slippingthroughthenet · 10/06/2025 09:25

Our dog is called Poppy. It’s a lovely name. My friend called her daughter Poppy and she’s an adult now. It’s a lovely name.

NuffSaidSam · 10/06/2025 09:29

I think they're both really nice.

Poppy is very popular and has been for a long time so I don't think you need to worry about it being overly cutsey for an adult. There will be loads of adults called Poppy soon.

Florence isn't a name that has an obvious shortening so I don't think you need to worry about unwanted nicknames too much. If you call her Florence, the bast majority of people will follow suit. Your only real concern is if she wants to be called Flo/Flossie/Flora etc. when she grows up. I know a Florence who goes by Ren which I quite like (her own decision as an adult!).

pimplebum · 10/06/2025 09:35

do you need a “adult” name to sound a certain way ? there will be tons of poppys in the future so don’t worry

bare in mind you can only control nick names to an extent she may prefer flossie or get called it at school

Emanwenym · 10/06/2025 09:39

You don't have any control over 'nicknames', it will be up to her once she's at school.
I prefer Poppy of the two, but they're both fine.
Flora is lovely.

Purplecatshopaholic · 10/06/2025 09:41

I know a Poppy. Lovely name. Florence is too open to nick names, none of which I like.

Eenameenadeeka · 10/06/2025 09:43

I love Florence, so pretty and elegant. I know of one at my childs school who has the nickname Florrie.

PomeloOud · 10/06/2025 10:30

Love Florence. I know a little Flo.

Poppy is too cutesy. Ok for a toddler, daft for an adult.

girljulian · 10/06/2025 10:31

Florence is hideous.

I like Poppy.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 10/06/2025 10:32

Florence Nickname Florrie

Emanwenym · 10/06/2025 10:35

@girljulian , I used to dislike it too.

Factor50sun · 10/06/2025 10:39

Florence 100%.

Ive never been a fan of Poppy (for the reasons you’ve mentioned), but it’s just personal preference.

Theres nothing wrong with either name.

TimeSquare · 10/06/2025 11:46

Florence. Poppy will be shorted to Pops

My Grandmother was Florence known as Florrie to loved ones - would that work for you? (Could be Florry if you prefer the y like poppy) or I like Flossie

Poppy somehow doesn't seem like a complete full name to me, but I suspect by the time she's an adult that her generation will see it as such.

choose whichever you love 😊

girljulian · 10/06/2025 10:31

Florence is hideous.

I like Poppy.

You're rude.

PrettyPuss · 10/06/2025 11:55

Poppy is a great name and works for a little girl (cute), a teenager (cool) and an adult (stylish).

uncomfortablydumb60 · 10/06/2025 10:32

Florence Nickname Florrie

This.

Poppy and Harry aren’t good together IMO

QuickPeachPoet · 10/06/2025 11:58

Florence is lovely. Nobody needs nicknames.

RuthW · 10/06/2025 12:16

Don’t choose Florence if you don’t like the shortenings. It will get shortened. (I have an adult Florence)

Doyouknowdanieltiger · 10/06/2025 12:20

Florence is sooooo common now.
Plus aunt Flo

I'd go with Poppy

purplecorkheart · 10/06/2025 12:22

I would go with Florence. I know a few of them and they do not use a nickname.

I love Poppy but feel it is a bit too childlike.

Straightomyhead · 10/06/2025 12:23

I know quite a few baby/toddler Florence’s and two adult poppys. Personally I prefer Poppy but both as lovely names.

DramaAlpaca · 10/06/2025 12:24

Florence is lovely.

Poppy is just so twee.
