Poppy or Florence

We are trying to choose a name for our baby girl and like the names Poppy and Florence. She will be a little sister to Jack and Harry.

We love Poppy but worry it may be a little cutesy for an adult. We also really like Florence, which seems elegant and mature, but don’t love the nicknames Flo or Floss/Flossie. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Florence is lovely. Not Flo, but Florrie or Flower if you like them.
Your daughter can correct others not to call her Flo. Don't let that be used in the any of the family. They'll all soon get the message.
I like names used in full, unrelated nicknames happen organically.

Mine has a lovely French name. I often called her Tig, because newly born, wearing her woolly bonnet, she looked like Mrs Tiggywinkle.

You're rude.

It's a baby names thread. People post to get others' opinions. Doesn't mean anyone has to agree with me!

Florence. I love the NN Florrie

Florence rather than Poppy.

Yes, but there was no need to be so rude in the way you expressed your opinion.

@AmelieSummer25 , she wasn't rude, she was giving her opinion.

KayEmAy · 10/06/2025 16:19

I prefer Poppy

Whatever, there are ways to say you don't like a name or prefer the other option without calling a name the OP likes, and may well use for her child, hideous.

but not everyone has decent manners I suppose.

IdaGlossop · 10/06/2025 16:40

Poppy to my ear is insubstantial whereas Florence has resonance and weight.

notacooldad · 10/06/2025 16:42

I like them both.

Poppy is a flower name with a really positive association with hope for the future. There are plenty of adult women called Poppy. There are Doctors, professors, teachers, civil servants, police officers, shop assistants, bus drivers. ...
I have no issue with people disliking a name because we're all different. But to suggest it's going to be an inappropriate name for an adult is nonsensical.

okay Hyacinth Bucket

If you want a more constructive opinion: I hugely dislike Florence because it WILL be shortened whatever you do, and the shortenings are not only awful but also have connotations surrounding menstruation. It also puts me in mind of words like "florid" which are unpleasant, and on top of that, it's extremely common. As someone who had an extremely common name as a child (before I started using my middle name) I can tell you it's shit.

Moreteaandchocolate · 10/06/2025 17:36

I know several adult Poppy’s and it translates well to adults imo. I like Florence too but agree that I dislike Flo / Flossie and would therefore go for Poppy.

I agree - Flo is a terrible nickname and is up there with Fanny and Aurélie as names that badly need to be flagged to potential users!

Norastroud · 10/06/2025 20:00

I think Flora or Ren are my favourite shortenings of Florence.
Poppy is also a lovely name, you could use it as a middle name ‘Florence Poppy’

BoleynMemories13 · 10/06/2025 20:06

I would shorten Florence to Florrie, personally, but if you're not keen on the short forms go for Poppy. It sounds nice with her brothers' names, and they'll be loads of Poppys her age when she grows up.
