Hugo, fabulous name.
Leo does nothing for me at all.

Minimalistmamaoftwo · 08/06/2025 05:47

They are both very popular now but Hugo feels like it’s trying to hard to be posh, Leo is lovely

loobyloo1979 · 08/06/2025 05:54

Hugo. I really dislike Leo.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 08/06/2025 06:06

Love Hugo

JillyGiraffe · 08/06/2025 06:14

Much prefer Leo!

GoldenRosebee · 08/06/2025 06:37

I love Hugo. I'm never quite sure what to think of Leo, although I do like Leon.
I never understand posh comments? Why is that negative?

CurlewKate · 08/06/2025 06:38

Hugo. But I prefer Hugh.

Ninkynonkpinkyponks · 08/06/2025 06:38

Hugo!

Zebralie · 08/06/2025 07:32

Hugh is nicer, I agree.

Bellaire85 · 08/06/2025 07:35

Leo. I love Hugo too, but feel it’s become a bit too popular now and like another poster said, a little try hard to be posh.

BoleynMemories13 · 08/06/2025 07:39

Depends what you want. Leo is far more mainstream, which I personally prefer despite the popularity (which wouldn't bother me, personally).

Hugo is less popular but definitely has that posh, private school feel to it (in Britain, I feel it's likely more mainstream on the continent).

I much prefer Leo, out of the two.

flossydog · 08/06/2025 07:40

They're both fine. Leo is more common now: 5th most common compared to 40-something for Hugo. So it's possible there'd be a few of them in his peer group.

Anecdotally, in my local play park, among 3-5 year olds, there are two Hugos and a Leo. though is that a problem? There have always been a bajillion Johns, James, Davids etc.

EleanorReally · 08/06/2025 07:42

i like them both
i think Hugo is possibly more popular
how about Hugh?
or Ewan

Pangu · 08/06/2025 07:43

Leo - it’s a lovely, strong name. It’s might be popular, but I only know one little boy with that name.

Really not a fan of Hugo, it’s a little too plummy and posh for me.

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 08/06/2025 07:44

Much prefer Leo!

MaryGreenhill · 08/06/2025 07:49

Love Hugo

Moreteaandchocolate · 08/06/2025 08:27

I prefer Leo, if you don’t mind its popularity? It’s got a friendly feel.

Hugo is a good name too, but it has posh vibes to me (though this association is fading as it gets more popular so that wouldn’t necessarily put me off).

TanyaMcQuoidHunt · 08/06/2025 08:29

I quite like both! I think I've heard Leo bellowed in a strong SE accent (I live in SE) and Hugo less so, so think I'd go with Hugo

Eenameenadeeka · 08/06/2025 09:42

I'd pick Hugo. Leo is too short it seems like it should be a nickname not a name in its own.

Clearinguptheclutter · 08/06/2025 09:45

Like both

but where I am (north west) calling a child Hugo would raise eyebrows. It feels “trying to be posh”. In some circles I’m sure it’s actually posh.

PanderBare · 08/06/2025 09:49

Babies called Hugo in England & Wales since 1996
Babies called Leo in England & Wales since 1996

I prefer Leo, it seems less faddy.

JBPmum · 08/06/2025 09:51

Leo. I really dislike Hugo.

Busted2006 · 08/06/2025 10:58

Hugo often becomes Ugo…

I prefer Leo but for me it is a little short for a first name and feels like it should have a longer version

BootballJoy · 08/06/2025 14:05

Leo has a much nicer sound to me.

flowerpop · 08/06/2025 17:40

every second child is called Leo. I know 8 of them!!
