Which baby name?

Bunny26 · 07/06/2025 16:20

I’m currently pregnant with my third girl and me and my partner have really struggled to agree on a name this time. Both our other daughters names begin with D and I wanted to try and carry this theme on, my partner on the other hand wasn’t too bothered what the name begun with. From the start I really have loved the name Daphne but my partner wasn’t too keen on it, no matter how many times we agree on a name I just know in my heart I truly don’t like it as Daphne is what I’d love. However we both do like the name Vienna, and it is a name I wouldn’t mind calling the baby. What name does everyone like better?

Daphne or Vienna?

the middle name has been determined from the start and that will begin with B.

Daphne. Love that name.

PanderBare · 07/06/2025 16:24

Daphne's OK but Vienna is awful.

LadySlipper · 07/06/2025 16:25

Daphne

BoleynMemories13 · 07/06/2025 16:26

Well the answer is obvious, Vienna, as it's the one you both like.

Sorry but if Dad isn't keen, you need to let Daphne go

MouldyCandy · 07/06/2025 16:26

Out of those two, definitely Daphne.

Darkgreendarkbark · 07/06/2025 16:27

Well, one of them is a recognised name, and the other one will mean a lifetime of "Sienna? Oh, Vee-enna? Isn't that a place? Did your parents go on honeymoon there or something? Were you conceived there? Hey, there's a song that goes like that, isn't there... Goes 'oh...Vienna!' Hey, do you remember Viennetta ice cream?" and so on.

Vienna is a pretty sound, but I'd always rather give a child a name that will be easy for them to wear. Daphne is lovely.

zanicus · 07/06/2025 16:31

Daphne

Moreteaandchocolate · 07/06/2025 16:31

Daphne is my favourite 🤩

Vienna I haven’t heard used as a name. Sienna or Vivien are nice.

sesquipedalian · 07/06/2025 16:32

I like Daphne. Do you have a Delphine or a Dominique? Just trying to think of other D names (although your DD’s will curse you if letters are still a thing when they’re older!)

Personally I don't find Vienna that odd a choice these days. I actually know of two, one in her teens and a toddler. I'm not aware of the teenager having an issues caused by her name. Kids these days are far more accepting of different names, because so many of them have them!

Many places names are used as first names. It's not a trend I'm a fan of, personally, but I know a Paris, Preston, Chester, India, Adelaide etc. That's even before you get into names like Florence and Sofia, which are hugely popular.

Whereas, for me, Daphne is more avoidable due to the Scooby Doo character (which young children would definitely reference). We're all different I guess.

stopringingme · 07/06/2025 16:34

Out of those two I prefer Daphne.

PanderBare · 07/06/2025 16:37

@sesquipedalian , Daisy, Dorothy, Delilah, Darcey, Deborah, Daniella, Diana, Dolores, Dina, ...

Calmdownpeople · 07/06/2025 16:37

But it doesn’t matter. Your OH doesn’t like Daphne so do you honestly think showing him a post from strangers that like the name will change his mind. It’s both your child and he doesn’t like the name. You need another name.

Littlemunchkinsmummy · 07/06/2025 16:39

Without knowing the names of your other daughters:

Delilah
Dina
Dahlia
Daisy

Daphne and Delphine are lovely

in the post I put my partner WASNT too keen, I forgot to add that he has now come round to like the name and these are our final two to choose from. My partner is pretty chill and he’s told me to pick… even though I’ve asked for peoples opinions I think some need to be a little less rude with how they word their comments. Thankyou to all those that have replied x

It's used, I grant you. I'm not saying people will be pointing and laughing in the street. It might well get compliments too. I just err on the side of not inviting tiresome questions and remarks, as kids can be self conscious and they are the ones who have to bear the name.

Adelaide and Sofia are classic names that long predate the place names. Paris too, if you look at the classics.

Chester became used as a first name due to its use as an aristocratic surname. Preston also derives more from the surname than the city, on its use as a first name.

India and Florence are better comparisons, as they very much came from the place names, and would have been quite "out there" when first used as names. However, they were both used meaningfully due to associations with the places, not just because they sounded pretty.

I think Vienna is more like when you get American kids randomly named London or "Londyn". But nicer. I'd far rather be Vienna than Londyn.

Skulling · 07/06/2025 16:42

Daphne is beautiful; not keen on Vienna at all. DH and I were in a similar situation with names and I pushed for the one I’d fallen in love with but that he wasn’t sure about. He now loves it and admits he was wrong!

Ok, I don't think it's that deep to need to get into the ins and outs of the origins of each name I listed as an example. The point was that many kids have place names these days and nobody she goes to school with and grows up with will bad an eyelid 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jeez, maybe I'm bored, some people on the names board are interested in this stuff.

It would be pretty boring if we all just said "yes I like that name" or "that name sounds a bit weird"

Well that changes things entirely then!

I'm sorry if you found some responses 'rude' but when presented with the information that Dad isn't keen on one and you both like the other it was only natural some people were wondering why you were asking us to pick between them.

Even with this new information though I would still pick Vienna. Not because it's a name I particularly like, personally, but I do think 3 D names could be overkill. Daphne isn't my cup of tea either (feels very dated to me), so out of those 2 I would still pick Vienna.

Mumofgirls2017 · 07/06/2025 17:00

Daphne!

RightSaidFrederica · 07/06/2025 17:00

Vienna isn’t nice.

Venitia is better if you want something similar.

schoolsoutforever · 07/06/2025 17:03

Daphne is lovely. I teach one and she is lovely and really suits her name. Vienna is not for me but if you like it then go for it. However, my vote is Daphne.

Indeed it would.

Yeah, I'm sure some people will have found it interesting. Personally I wouldn't pick any of those names anyway, so I'm sorry I was probably the wrong audience for your insightful dissection of my throwaway comment.

but if we dislike the name then so will others.

Venetia sounds nicer than Vienna.
