so people can say "Oh, Paul/ Jim/ Bountiful/ Eliza it reminds me of a cartoon I used to watch"

or 'my cousin XXX was really annoying it reminds me of him'

or 'it sounds like you have made it up'

or 'my granny used to say "Jiminy Cricket" so he will get called that at school

JUST ASK THE DAMN FATHER AND IF THE BOTH OF YOU LIKE IT THEN FAIR ENOUGH

no name is going to be universally liked, and some people on here are just needlessly rude

why are you listening to the random associations of a group of harpies like us?

PuppyMonkey · 22/05/2008 10:47

I quite like Bountiful...

lazarou · 22/05/2008 10:48

I agree. It's like a red rag...

Kewcumber · 22/05/2008 10:49

No no no no no not Elzia - reminds me of My Fair Lady

Kewcumber · 22/05/2008 10:49

Eliza

Elzia however is quite interesting....

MamaG · 22/05/2008 10:50

cappy, get with the programme!

Cappuccino · 22/05/2008 10:50

"he will get XXX" as a nickname

no he won't

your children's evil nasty friends will pick far more cutting nicknames than the first thing that comes into your head and they will probably have nothing to do with his name

and all your associations are over 30 years old

Cappuccino · 22/05/2008 10:51

I don't care if you were there first MamaG

they are still bloody doing it

OMG was thinking just this the other day. Maybe it's so we can be amazed by their creativity? BTW saw boy called JAYKOB the other day.

Bunch · 22/05/2008 10:51

I completely agree. Both times I was preg my DH and I never discussed names with anyone. We chose unusual names which we knew people would give their opinions on. Once the DC were here and we told people their names they just accepted it and couldn't say "Urgh! I don't like that"! Well I suppose they could!

Cappuccino · 22/05/2008 10:56

yes bunch my kids' names are insane

there is no way I would ask for people's opinions on them

why on earth would I if I like them?

your kids' names are too special to tout about like that

Learned not to ask after terrible reactions to dd's potential name. Now surprise everyone. Didn't stop my granny disliking ds's name though, and telling me...

lazarou · 22/05/2008 11:02

I told a snobby friend I wanted to call ds1 Bradley, and her reply 'oh what, like Bradley Road?' because there is a road near where I live called just that. Bloody bitch, her kids have got stupid twattish names but I wouldn't tell her that.

MamaG · 22/05/2008 11:03

I actually like this topic even though I will NOT psot my potential baby names here!

nailpolish · 22/05/2008 11:04

i dont think people are really interested in the opinion of otheres whhen they post "do you like this name i have chosen?" even i f a million people replied "no its horrible" they would still go with it

i think they are just excited about impending birth and showing off the fabulous name they have chosen and how much they love it

i lvoe my childrens names and dont give a hoot who doesnt

constancereader · 22/05/2008 11:04

I posted here the other day due to a violent disagreement with my DH about how a name would be percieved. It was great, most of you agreed with me.

I deliberately did not post about the name I want for my dd as I know it is a fabulous name anyway.

LynetteScavo · 22/05/2008 11:05

I'm with you, Cappuccino.

And a don't know why people don't go and get themselves a baby name book.

nailpolish · 22/05/2008 11:06

i didnt tell folks the name until the baby was born. then they tend to keep traps shut and only say "yuk thats a crap name" behind your back

nailpolish · 22/05/2008 11:06

but baby books are shit! full of wierdo names and no normal ones.

MamaG · 22/05/2008 11:07

my surname is in a baby name book

Its not a "Tyler" type surname either, you'd have to be VERY lentil weavy to use it

2point4kids · 22/05/2008 11:08

I think this topic is fine if you are thick skinned enough to deal with the responses!

We never told anyone in RL what we were planning to call DS2.
I was stuck between 2 names though and asked on here to get a general idea of which one would get a more positive response. Any insulting responses didnt bother me as I didnt take them personally. Not everyone can like the same names! It was just a good gauge of popularity.

In the end I surprised myself by deciding on something completely different when DS2 was born anyway

Cappuccino · 22/05/2008 11:09

we got the Oxford book of children's names

there were some corkers in there

OP posts:
MamaG · 22/05/2008 11:10

cappy would you call a child my surname?

Cappuccino · 22/05/2008 11:10

I asked dd1 to choose dd2's name because we couldn't decide between two in the end

see I would trust a 4 year old over you lot
