so people can say "Oh, Paul/ Jim/ Bountiful/ Eliza it reminds me of a cartoon I used to watch"

or 'my cousin XXX was really annoying it reminds me of him'

or 'it sounds like you have made it up'

or 'my granny used to say "Jiminy Cricket" so he will get called that at school

JUST ASK THE DAMN FATHER AND IF THE BOTH OF YOU LIKE IT THEN FAIR ENOUGH

no name is going to be universally liked, and some people on here are just needlessly rude

why are you listening to the random associations of a group of harpies like us?

She was 4

Cappuccino · 22/05/2008 11:12

oh yes

tbh I have forgotten who everyone is on facebook

dh was asking the other day who my friends were and I couldn't honestly tell them

but no, I wouldn't, though I wouldn't criticise anyone who did

i wasnt really that bothered about names tbh. it wasnt The Biggest Decision of My Life, like it appers to be for some

MamaG · 22/05/2008 11:15

I think Enid said she let her DH choose all her DDs names, as she wasn't bothered

Cappuccino · 22/05/2008 11:17

my friend let her 3 year old choose her baby's middle name

she is waiting for him to grow up and realise and deck him

Lol Squonk!

Mr Mopple is a damn fine name

doggiesayswoof · 22/05/2008 11:33

lol

I agree with OP.

My 3yo dd is DESPERATE for us to call next dc Eliza. Or Tom for a boy. As far as she is concerned it's a done deal.

I really don't know how to get out of this as I don't particularly like either of 'em but have no bright ideas myself yet (I do have 4 days to decide - plenty of time)

I tell a lie, I do quite like Tom, but don't think it goes with my surname

fryalot · 22/05/2008 11:35

Having to call it Mr. Mopple is a damn fine contraceptive, I can tell you

lazarou · 22/05/2008 11:36

Oh, I hope my 'friend' isn't an MNer. She will definitely be able to identify me after my first post. Oh well, who cares. She also has an extremely unfortunate surname, which makes her childrens first names sound even more twattish.

Weegiemum · 22/05/2008 13:51

When I was expecting ds, dd1 (just about 2) thought Bagpuss would be a lovely name for him.

jk1 · 22/05/2008 16:23

Is useful at times - I never read The SUn so would not know what page 3 girls are called was quite an insight when I asked about a girls name on here!

vicsta · 22/05/2008 16:43

i'm with JK. Bloody useful for idiots like me who have no idea what goes on in the real world. It seems I also considered naming future child after a page three girl, a tweenie and a well-known-to-everyone-except-me cartoon character. I'm thickskinned and LOVE to hear others' responses. The more cutting wittier, the better. It's not why people post, but why they get so upset that I don't understand. And it never seems to be the OP either , usually someone who has jumped on to get all uppity on behalf of the OP

lollipopmother · 22/05/2008 17:00

I had loads of help earlier in the week with how to spell the middle name we've chosen, sounds stupid now but I had 4 ways of spelling it and none of them were actually right!

Blandmum · 22/05/2008 17:04

I still affirm that we were right to disuade someone from calling their child Alias....

belgo · 22/05/2008 17:06

But did we succeed is disuading her MB?

VersdeSociete · 22/05/2008 17:07

It's just pointless but pleasurable wittering isn't it?

Blandmum · 22/05/2008 17:09

I think in the end she said she had decided to go for another name anyway but still thought it was a perfectly sensible name

pointydog · 22/05/2008 17:22

I like the baby names topic. It's so easy and relaxing to pass comment on a name.

Elkat · 24/05/2008 18:23

Because actually sometimes people can actually give good advice!

I didn't really use the websites before my two were born, but now I wish I had!

My DD1 has recently decided to shorten her name to Ellie - which I hate. I never considered that her name would be shortened to this (her name isn't eleanor), its not an immediate shortening that I considered even as an option. I tried using a different pet name, but recently she insists that she is to be called Ellie - and I have to lump it. I so wish someone had pointed that out to me when i was pregnant!

Equally, when I gave birth to DD1, we were considering two very similar names (one with an e ending one with an a ending) - almost went with the a ending until someone pointed out that it sounded very much like a song title when put with our surname.

With DD2, we considered Annabel until someone else pointed out that if she shortened her name to Anna and put it with our surname it almost made a different word. And yes Anna X did sound ludicrous when it was put like that - I just never considered that point.

In the end, the name we eventually came up with has a potential shortening which, when put with our surname is the name of someone famous. Whilst our daughter is never known as that, I have had 101 jokes about the famous person with the same name! It dries me insane, and again it is something I wished I had considered before she was born.

These are just little things that simply didn't occur to us when we had our DDs, but would have made me seriously consider the names we gave if someone had pointed it out. Whilst you are never going to please everyone, if you ask widely, people can give you different perspectives on names, point out potential pet names and downfalls of different names and perhaps help you to narrow down your choices to the best name you can give. I didn't ask nearly enough people their views - but I guess I learnt that the hard way!
