Opinions on the name Miles?

Never ever had this name as a contender until a week ago.

Kind of irrelevant but strange back story to where I’ve got the name from:

My husband suggested it as we were on our way to the airport a week ago, and a singer on the radio was named Miles and I loved it.

The next day, I went to read a book I bought for my holiday - the main character was named Miles and his mother in the book has my name!

The day after, my husband saw a TikTok of a baby named Miles and the babies surname was my maiden name.

I feel like the universe is sending me a hard sign here that the baby wants to be called Miles 🤣

His name, since before I was even pregnant, was going to be Xander. But something is pulling me towards Miles now and I think I really love the name.
What do you all think of the name? Is it crazy to change his name when I’m 7 months pregnant, on a whim?

Like Myles/Miles , love Milo !
Love Alexander .
Hate Xander.

Zebralie · 06/06/2025 16:22

In the UK Miles is used as a measurement of distance. Like naming a child Kilometres!

Zebralie · 06/06/2025 16:23

One Mile, two Miles…. It looks like a plural

obecalp12 · 06/06/2025 16:26

I've got one! Wanted a top 100 name without it being a top 10 (ie, not super common but not 'unique' either). I also think its a name that works for any age.

I wanted 'Xavier' but DH not keen (similar to Xander). We also decided on it through a 'sign from the universe' type scenario when the care package left for us at our babymoon accommodation had a box of Miles tea bags.

Frasier's brother. Nope.

That was Niles not Miles

U53rn8m3ch8ng3 · 06/06/2025 16:30

Xander is absolutely awful IMO so I'd pick Miles, which is better, not miles better mins you but better.

Spinachpastapicker · 06/06/2025 16:31

I like Alexander with nn Xander, it’s a strong classic name.

Sorry but every Miles I have met has been posh, wet and very very dull. So I’m put off the name by that.

I agree to wait and see what he looks like.

Ihavedecided · 06/06/2025 16:33

Very dated. Xander is a bit try too hard.

Offleyhoo · 06/06/2025 16:39

I'm sorry but I don't like it at all, it gives me real debonnair, posh cad type vibes (older, jaguar driving smoothie, or maybe that was just my parents' friends 😂)

MoominMai · 06/06/2025 16:49

@Thelightblueduck its interesting reading all these opinions. Names can sometimes be suggestive of a type of person and in my head from my experiences Miles sounds like they would be a posh toff 😅

A different and unique but actually old name I do like for a boy is Asa. Unfortunately never met anyone to have kids with and now it’s too late but I reckon I’d have chose this for my unborn boy!

Cakeandusername · 06/06/2025 17:09

I like Miles. Makes me think of Miles in This life - 90s show about lawyers - Miles was a posh trainee barrister. Not a fan of Xander.

Emanwenym · 06/06/2025 17:17

@Cakeandusername , same here, and it's why I don't like Delilah but like Anna and Edgar.

Meowmeowmeowmeowmeowmeow · 06/06/2025 17:32

As pp mentioned, it does rhyme with Piles and my DH has had the misfortune of being called this many times in his life, or having to hear his name being used as a joke comparing it to the measurement 🙄

DH has also been told a few times that he doesn't suit his name, in that he's not posh, so I do think a lot of people make that connection with the name too.

It does sound nice though and if you like it, that's all that matters :-)

Dustmylemonlies · 06/06/2025 17:33

I really like it. Smile

PlasticAcrobat · 06/06/2025 17:37

To me, Miles has a bit of a posh, "Red trousers" vibe to it. I'd expect a Miles to be a bit entitled and male chauvinistic.

Xander is posh too, though.

GetOffTheCounter · 06/06/2025 17:40

I know only one Miles. he is in his 50s and is a very nice and jolly fellow. He is known as Milo by his closest friends which I like also.

I have warm feelings towards it.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 06/06/2025 18:01

My cousin was called Myles, same name different spelling.

Pinty · 06/06/2025 18:09

I'm sorry but it's one of those names I really dislike .
But he's not my baby he's yours. So if you both love it use it.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 06/06/2025 18:11

It's 2025, surely Kilometres is more contemporary?

Hardly when Miles is a perfectly normal established name in the UK that no one bats an eyelid towards.

ItsStillWork · 06/06/2025 18:19

I like it

If I had a child called Miles I would call him Kilometres for short, since a kilometre is only five eighths of a mile.

monktasmic · 06/06/2025 18:30

I love Miles / Myles and only know nice ones!
I actually dislike Xander - and think Alexander is an incredibly dull name.

Firsttimebabymummy · 06/06/2025 18:32

Alexander Miles?

EllieQ · 06/06/2025 21:13

I love it, and if we’d had a boy, he would have been Miles. As a previous poster has said, it means ‘soldier’.

It’s the name of the main character in one of my favourite book series (Vorkosigan Saga - a science fiction series), but that’s a fairly obscure reference. People may remember the character of Miles from the 90s series Ths Life, or Miles Morales from the recent animated Spider-Man films.
