How particular are you about your own name?

Do you mind if other people:
spell your name differently to you;
read it differently;
use a different version.
eg if your name is Catherine do you mind:
spellings like Katherine, Kathryn;
pronunciations like cat-er-in, caff-rin;
versions like Katarina, Cateline.

I think your mam was right? The commonest Irish pronunciation is Ashleen, with the G silent?

I remember an Irish teacher I had telling me aisling is usually pronounced Ash Ling but that was Dublin. I've heard Ash linn and Ash lean in Cork and Galway

Pinty · 30/05/2025 13:52

I had a normal name but can very easily be spelled differently and confused with s different name
It doesn't particularly bother me of people get it wrong.

BigGra · 30/05/2025 13:56

My name is Irish, a Gaelic name well known in Irish folklore and recently has had a surge in popularity - it is mispronounced and misspelled all the time.
Couldn’t care less.

NefiBlw · 30/05/2025 13:56

@Wisterical What does it matter? When your pay doesn't go through because they misspell it, when an email goes to someone else or bounces...

My name is Meriel, rarely pronounced right first go which is mildly annoying but what really does piss me off is people that know me well, have been corrected, have heard others pronounce it correctly and still continue to call me Muriel, Marrell, Mirrell, and my favourite two Merlin and Merida.

I love the name Meriel. Like PP I've only ever met 1 before. I was a carer for her very very lovely mother.

PinkTonic · 30/05/2025 13:58

My name has two spellings. I find it rude and annoying when people at work persistently use the wrong spelling despite the correct one being my email address and clearly in my signature.

Daffodilsarefading · 30/05/2025 14:00

Yes I would mind if someone misspelt my name. If they know me they know to spell it but it isn’t a name with multiple spellings. It used to annoy me at school when I received Christmas cards with all manner of spellings. I remember thinking we have been in the same class for years, my name is on the classroom wall and in numerous other places, I have also written my name on your card, yet you don’t have the intelligence to even copy it correctly.
The modern day equivalent of replying to an email with the incorrect spelling.
For years an ex in-law would spell my DCs name wrong think Isobel as Isabelle. This was dispute receiving Christmas and birthday cards regularly with the correct spellings. Nothing unusual about my DCs baked either. What made it worse was that this person was a school teacher.

RainbowSlimeLab · 30/05/2025 14:06

I go by three versions of my name and don't care which one people use. It bothers me more if people misspell dd's name but I wouldn't say anything.

DramaAlpaca · 30/05/2025 14:11

My mother has an unusual name that people constantly spell and pronounce wrongly, and it upsets her. She hates her name.

Because of that she gave me a name that can't be messed around with, and I'm very grateful for that. Some people do mishear it at first and call me a similar name, but that is easily corrected.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/05/2025 14:12

eg if your name is Catherine do you mind:
spellings like Katherine, Kathryn; No
pronunciations like cat-er-in, caff-rin; No
versions like Katarina, Cateline. Getting worse

And men who insist on diminutising names; Katy, Katie, Kikat, can fuck right off.

Paaseitjes · 30/05/2025 14:13

I have a common with lots of international variations (like Catherine-Katherine-Katarina-Catherijne-Katja-Katie) I respond to all pronounciations although there's one common variant that sound v 60s which I hate. Seeing it spelt wrong really bugs me though.

RedBeech · 30/05/2025 14:15

It massively irritates me that a woman I have worked with for well over ten years mis-spells my name every time, despite its full correct version being part of the email address she has for me.

But I have a name that has loads of similar versions (Like Katrin/Caitlin/Kathryn) so if people I don't know well call me by an approximation of my name, I don't care. It's only people who should know but can't be bothered.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/05/2025 14:20

First name - it's a well known name with 1 very common English spelling, and Welsh and Irish variants. I love both of these, and my Welsh step dad calls me the Welsh one affectionately, which I rather like.

My first name is not very common in my age group. Unfortunately it runs into my Irish surname to form a name that is very common in my age group. It is a fine name, but it's just not mine!

Eg: Sue Hannah becoming Suzanna

I am very particular about my surname being spelt correctly. It is an unusual spelling of an unusual name and is full of silent vowels.

honeylulu · 30/05/2025 14:22

Spelling - not really bothered, mainly because it's a name spell as it sounds so I'm just amused when people manage to spell it wrong, particularly if it's written down in front of them.

Different version - my surname is similar to a more common one. For example my name is like Cunnington (not real name) and so I get called Cunningham a lot. I don't mind correcting politely but it does start to grate when the same person does it over and over. It seems a bit rude.

Wrong diminutive. I actually hate this. Say my name is Elizabeth and I go by Lizzie, introduce myself as such, sign off emails etc. Many people automatically seem entitled to refer to me as Liz, which I hate. I will correct politely initially but after that I will say I dislike it. I've even had people saying they don't like using Lizzie as it's "a silly name". Also rude. I tell them to call me Elizabeth then since that's my actual name but NOT Liz. My old boss was called Jenny, that was her birth certificate name. Know it all twats would often call her Jennifer and then got all offended when she objected.

Mispronunciation. Yes a bit annoying because you'd think you can't go wrong with Elizabeth but the number of people who referred to me as Lizberf at school (teachers were the worst) was bonkers. It was what drove me to insisting on a diminutive version. You can't really correct people for doing that either because it sounds like you are criticising them for not "speaking properly".

Denimrules · 30/05/2025 14:23

See the Eliana thread I'm on re Michelle, Elaine, Yvonne, Leonie. I'm one of these, saying it the correct way is fairly rare. I'm ok with it. People don't tend to mind me saying.

I have an unusual surname. Definitely English/European but I nearly always have to spell it. No pronunciation issues but I have to repeat it for everyone and often say the spelling too. So I am just used to doing it

SunnyFog · 30/05/2025 14:32

Interesting. My name has multiple variations and I accept all sorts. There are some I dislike, but apart from that I answer to many combinations of the letters, many pronunciations, and quite a few completely different names that people assign to mine.
I usually like to hear what people come up with.

ChilliMum · 30/05/2025 14:40

I have a fairly uncommon name but not so unusual that people have never heard it.

The problem is there is a similar more common name for example if I was called Suzanne and people kept calling me Susan / Sue.

I don't particularly dislike the other version but it's not my name and not pronounced the same. I used to correct people but then the next time I saw them it would be Susan again and so as I have just learned to live with it.

The thing that gets me the most though is emails, my name is in my email address and I sign off with my first name and people still reply with Hi Susan 🙄

AlteredStater · 30/05/2025 14:50

Mine is pronounced a bit differently depending what country someone is from i.e. their accent will affect how my name sounds. Mostly it's fine though. I do like my name shortened, unless it's by someone I barely know in which case I bristle a bit internally.

CheerfulYank · 30/05/2025 14:52

Mine is Megan. Some people here pronounce the first part like May and I hate that. Meg rhymes with egg! 😡

Sparklesandmajic · 30/05/2025 15:11

My birth was registered by my father who decided he preferred my name ending with an e. Think Ann/Anne or Lynn/Lynne (none of which is my actual name). For more than 40 years I overlooked a family member misspelling it but have become a bit crochety of late. I’ve tried underling the e, writing that letter in different coloured ink, misspelling her name - nope, she’s immune to it! It’s not as if she’s distant. When we meet she’s all over me like a rash.
My science teacher and school friend’s older sister were Meriels. It’s a beautiful name.

TheyreLikeUsButRichAndThin · 30/05/2025 15:12

My boss ALWAYS spells my name wrong. I let it slide, because she’s nice and I love my job and I’m a normal person. There are things you can choose to be pissed off about or not. I choose not to be.

purplecorkheart · 30/05/2025 15:18

I am normally ok about my name. There are a few ways of spelling it. There is one colleague of mine who annoys me though as every single email has a different spelling.

In Australia they say something like Meegan.

DemBonesDemBones · 30/05/2025 18:11

Thanks for the Meriel love! Mumsnet really seems to like it!

Feelikeaplasticbag · 30/05/2025 21:26

I don't mind if it gets mispronounced as it's a foreign name. I find people are really nice and always ask me if they've pronounced it right. I always say yes even if they get it totally wrong as I really don't mind!

I really don't like when it's misspelt though, if they're responding to an email from me and could have literally taken half a second to check and get it right.

Same with my kids names - don't mind pronunciations but unfortunately hadn't realised DS' name has about 5 different spellings. I get really annoyed when close family and friends still can't get it right 8 years later (we chose the most common version and it's only 5 letters long - it's not that hard surely!)
