Do you mind if other people:
spell your name differently to you;
read it differently;
use a different version.
eg if your name is Catherine do you mind:
spellings like Katherine, Kathryn;
pronunciations like cat-er-in, caff-rin;
versions like Katarina, Cateline.

There are different spellings of my name in different countries so people sometimes get the spelling wrong or randomly pronounce it the Czech way. I think my name is hard for dyslexics. So I just shrug it off when people spell it wrong.

Except for Pamela from HR. We had several long email exchanges and my name is right there in my email address and my signature block and then she randomly reverses two letters and adds another. For weeks. Then she tells a colleague it’s a microaggression to get people’s name wrong. Which I didn’t think was the case for her, just that she somehow couldn’t get it right. I cracked and told her in the end. She still spelled it wrong.

MauraLabingi · 30/05/2025 13:17

Mine has multiple spellings, one common pronunciation and one less common pronunciation. I get everything, including wrong spellings and wrong pronunciations (which is actually quite impressive because it's not difficult).

I couldn't care less.

RedToothBrush · 30/05/2025 13:18

One of my closer friends calls me the wrong spelling every time. I can't be arsed to correct her. It's not worth the hassle.

I frequently get called the wrong surname. That's great because I know they are worth my time in most scenarios that happens.

So I'm not bothered.

spiderlight · 30/05/2025 13:19

Mine is three letters and impossible to mispronounce, but people always put an 'e' on the end of it. My lovely MIL has known me for 26 years and it's still 50/50 whether or not I'll get a free 'e' when she writes my name! I actually prefer it with an 'e' in general and it doesn't change the sound, so I don't really mind, but I have to be specific if I'm giving out my email address.

DemBonesDemBones · 30/05/2025 13:21

My name is Meriel, rarely pronounced right first go which is mildly annoying but what really does piss me off is people that know me well, have been corrected, have heard others pronounce it correctly and still continue to call me Muriel, Marrell, Mirrell, and my favourite two Merlin and Merida.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/05/2025 13:21

Yes. My name has two spellings - a male version and a female version. Lots of people don't realise that, as it's not a very common name these days. The shortened version is also generally only used for men. My parents and sister sometimes call me by the shortened version, but I wouldn't want anyone else to!

Lovely name! I once taught a girl called Meriel, but she's the only one I've met.

whirlyhead · 30/05/2025 13:23

I have a long and unusual name which everyone misspells (even though it's in my email signature) and mispronounces. It's Welsh.

Now when people ask me how to spell it, I just say, "However you like."

I do shorten it to a one-syllable name, which is also invariably misspelt. Or people extend it to a longer name which isn't my actual name...

I've given up – I just quietly curse my mother for giving me this name!

RosesAndHellebores · 30/05/2025 13:23

4 syllables. Pronounced as spelt. Often pronounced incorrectly when it is perfectly phonetic. People just chose not to see a vowel.

It is never shortened. Those who do, do so at their peril. MIL did it once. An arsehole very senior and misogynistic professor at work did it once.

IfYouDontBelieveIt · 30/05/2025 13:23

I don't mind when people mispronounce it on first seeing it because it's an unusual spelling. However, I do find it quite annoying when people mispronounce it after I have introduced myself verbally, for example:

Me: "Hi, my name is Jane"
Them: "Great to meet you, Joan"

Similarly, if I have signed an email with my name and they respond with an incorrect spelling, that irks me.

OkPedro · 30/05/2025 13:24

My name is Aisling (Ash Ling) People very rarely spell my name correct even Irish people. I can understand though as it sounds like there should be a h.
What bothers me though is if I sign an email or text with Aisling and the person replies Hi Ashling. My Mam didn't even pronounce my name correctly she called me Ash Lean 😆

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 30/05/2025 13:25

I go by the shortened version of my name and don't like it when people use the full version x

But then I give my dd a million nicknames depending on my mood that day 🤭

Titasaducksarse · 30/05/2025 13:25

I have a name that can be shortened to at least 4 names. 1 I'm very particular that I do not like and will correct people if they just assume to call me that. Otherwise I'm don't mind full name or shortened to the others I like.

CandiedPrincess · 30/05/2025 13:25

I get irked when people (especially people I don't know very well) shorten my name. Like Victoria, to Vicky for example. Or change it ever so slightly like Carolina to Caroline. It just feels lazy.

(Neither of those are my name for the record!)

Magpiecomplex · 30/05/2025 13:26

I don't generally mind unless they do it repeatedly. The one that really annoys me is people adding an extra letter, either written or spoken, that turns me into a man.

FreeWillyPorFavor · 30/05/2025 13:29

I have a Julie/Julia type of name and I don’t care at all if people get it wrong. I correct them once in case they didn’t know then I just answer to either.

my family and colleagues get very shirty on my behalf but I just don’t have the energy to care 🤷‍♀️

justgoandgetpizza · 30/05/2025 13:34

I’ve had to accept being called a completely different name at preschool amongst the other mums. It does bother me but I’m also resigned to it!

BobbyBiscuits · 30/05/2025 13:35

It happens fairly often with mine. It's a very common name that's a short version of several other very common names. But it gets pronounced or spelled wrong, or they use a different long version that isn't actually my name at all. I don't really mind that much tbh.

JDM625 · 30/05/2025 13:40

As a side note, when I was 9, I had a friend from Madagascar. Her surname is 17 letters long, but I learnt to pronounce and spell it even at that age!

I realise some people are dyslexic or having learning issues, but some adults just make no effort with other peoples names!

DisapprovingSpaniel · 30/05/2025 13:42

I don't really care tbh. I have a name that is a bit more heard of these days but for most of my life has been new to people I met and it has been spelled about half a dozen different ways, pronounced about as many different ways again and shortened almost always.

None of which bothers me. I know they mean me Grin

I think your mam was right? The commonest Irish pronunciation is Ashleen, with the G silent?

Do you mind if other people:

read it differently;
use a different version.
eg if your name is Catherine do you mind:
spellings like Katherine, Kathryn;
pronunciations like cat-er-in, caff-rin;
versions like Katarina, Cateline.

I'm honestly not that fussy. People always get my name[s] wrong.

My forename is a reasonably ordinary name, but people are always misreading it/mispronouncing it. Think something like Helene and people saying 'Helen'. No big deal.

My maiden name was eastern European. Something like Jankovic [Yank-o-veetch] which would be pronounced 'Jank-o-vik'. No big deal.

My married surname is something akin to "Menzies" getting mangled as "Men-zis".

There's no point in getting annoyed - people don't make mistakes deliberately.

My names is Anne but I can't bear it when people spell it Ann! I can understand if they've only heard it and just assume it is the more common spelling. However, I've had cards, etc from colleagues who know it's Anne but with my name misspelt . I've been in the same workplace for 18 years and management are still spelling it as Ann. I receive emails or am referred to in other documentation as Ann. The worst thing is, I have corrected management repeatedly but they persist. When I see my name incorrectly alongside my surname it feels weird, like it's not me, if that makes sense!

Wisterical · 30/05/2025 13:50

My name can be spelled three ways, two equally common, one more unusual. I don't mind a jot how anyone spells it. What does it matter?

willowbuffytara · 30/05/2025 13:51

Very, the last few years people keep using the male version. I’m constantly correcting them
