Francesca, Elena or Giulia

Hi all, DH and I are expecting our first baby. We are Italian but we have a lot of French in our family and live in the uk.

Our top contenders are
~ Francesca (maybe a little over done but a lovely name) likely to pronounced correctly in all 3 countries
~ Elena, worried this would be a provocation nightmare. We would say Eh-len-ah but I know in the uk it sometimes sounds more like Eleanor or is even just said Eh-lay-na
~ Giulia, Classic, should be pronounced correctly but likely to have spelling issues with Julia

We like Anna, Sara Maria but have plenty in the family they feel like the default for any international family.

So thoughts - Francesca, Elena or Giulia?

Francesca!

I would have completely butchered Giulia if you were expecting Julia. I think the circles you move in have vastly underestimated how many people would get this wrong.

WorthySloth · 30/05/2025 06:33

My youngest is Francesca. Still generally uses her full name tbh

Rtato · 30/05/2025 06:59

Giulia Is lovely. I’m not keen on the other two. In the UK there are a huge variety of names that are not your traditional Jane or John. The majority of people will get it right as soon as they are told the correct pronunciation. There are a very small percentage (luckily a dying breed) who pretend they can’t pronounce/can’t be arsed to try and give an anglicised nickname, but at least you can weed out the racists that way!

Be prepared that once in secondary school, fellow pupils will shorten the names. I love all the different names friends give each other. Meanwhile I struggle with all the different spellings of the same name. All of those names are beautiful. I also love Anna.

PurpleReindeer2 · 30/05/2025 07:04

Francesca is lovely and will give the least problem with the correct pronunciation.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/05/2025 08:27

I think Francesca will be the most familiar in all three cultures.
Elena will give pronunciation issues.

Giulia is my favourite. I think Alfa Romeo have probably done a lot to make the name better known outside Italy!

polarsystem · 30/05/2025 13:59

All beautiful names. I prefer Giulia. People will get used to her name spelling as there are so many different spellings for all types of names.

PanderBare · 30/05/2025 14:04

@polarsystem , some people will but some won't. They'll remember it starts with a G but they'll get the vowels wrong.

But is Giulia said 'joo-lee-uh' (same as Julia) or more like 'zhoo-lee-uh'? I mean the sound like in the French words 'jardin' 'joie' 'jolie' or the s in 'pleasure' or 'treasure'.?

Joo-lee-uh to us but maybe the French relatives would say Zhoo-Lee-uh.

Thanks I've wondered about that for a long time!

Shitlord · 30/05/2025 14:48

Elena is nicest in itself but a lot of similar variations, Francesca is fine but not to my taste. I don't care for Giulia.

Pemba · 30/05/2025 14:51

It's a lovely name (Giulia). Francesca is also gorgeous, but it did have a wave of popularity in the UK about 25-30 years ago, if that matters to you. I don't think it was in the top ten names or anything like that. But maybe Giulia would be a bit more unusual?

Sgtmajormummy · 30/05/2025 14:56

Several Italian/English couples I know have a daughter called Emma.
It’s nice , certainly no problems with the pronunciation.
DH wanted Giulia for DD but I got my way with Silvia. The light “IL” is a bit difficult for English speakers (Sulvya) but I can live with that!

KayEmAy · 30/05/2025 14:59

Team Elena :)

Clearinguptheclutter · 30/05/2025 15:14

Like all three but a friend with an Elena gets issues with pronunciation and spelling.

Francesca and Giulia for that reason though some people will struggle with Giulia. Less so in the London area I imagine

PanderBare · 30/05/2025 15:18

I thought Silvia was more like Seelvia @Sgtmajormummy , god knows what the 'sulvya' is meant to be wouldn't it jist be said as Sylvia in the UK?

PrincessOfPreschool · 30/05/2025 15:20

Francesca definitely.

Elena could be E-LAY-nuh (stress on second syllable, English trying to say it like Italians!) or ELLen-uh (English - stress on first syllable exactly like Eleanor) or even E-LEN-a (stress on second syllable in Spain and Romania).

Giulia is nice too. They're is an Alfa Romeo with that spelling, I think, so it's not completely odd and everyone will know how to say it when they see it.

Edited

Maybe in Scotland it would be sulvia! I have always said Silvia/ Sylvia with a short 'i' like in 'hit' (South East).

PanderBare · 30/05/2025 15:24

and everyone will know how to say it when they see it. they won't. AR cars aren't very popular in the UK.

Sgtmajormummy · 30/05/2025 15:51

@PrincessOfPreschool
It’s the “L” that’s the problem. The LV combination often forces the L into the mouth (English) rather than the lips (Italian).
Similar to the L in “bottle”.

PanderBare · 30/05/2025 16:20

@PrincessOfPreschool , good point.

I'd say the first i in Silvia like the one in pizza.
The L isn't like the one in silver.

The gi isn't j, but isn't gee either.

AcquadiP · 30/05/2025 16:22

Giulia

Alfas are far from unknown in the UK though!

edited for typos

PanderBare · 30/05/2025 17:24

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads , no but as an example, there are nearly 62000 Alfa Romeo cars (6,609 of them Giulias) in the UK and 712000 Fiats.
