Francesca, Elena or Giulia

Hi all, DH and I are expecting our first baby. We are Italian but we have a lot of French in our family and live in the uk.

Our top contenders are
~ Francesca (maybe a little over done but a lovely name) likely to pronounced correctly in all 3 countries
~ Elena, worried this would be a provocation nightmare. We would say Eh-len-ah but I know in the uk it sometimes sounds more like Eleanor or is even just said Eh-lay-na
~ Giulia, Classic, should be pronounced correctly but likely to have spelling issues with Julia

We like Anna, Sara Maria but have plenty in the family they feel like the default for any international family.

So thoughts - Francesca, Elena or Giulia?

Francesca is a beautiful name.

Firsttimebabymummy · 29/05/2025 12:19

You've listed them in my order of preference. Francesca is beautiful.

Londonmummy66 · 29/05/2025 12:28

I love them all but I can imagine the issue you have flagged with Guilia

Mightyhike · 29/05/2025 12:42

I like all three of them, Elena is my favourite.

Bets64 · 29/05/2025 12:44

Our DD's are called Elena and Giulia! (Italian family living in London). Elena is obvs pronounce the Italian way - some people do say Eh -lay-na but only need corrected once. There are loads of Giulias in London - she had to be Giulia R at school, as there was another Giulia in her class! Everyone knows how to pronounce it around here, but perhaps not outside London. All your names are lovely - choose your favourite, and don't worry about mispronunciation. People will pronounce it the way you do!

Goandygo · 29/05/2025 12:45

I love all 3 - beautiful names.
If I had to choose, I would probably go for Giulia.

shellyleppard · 29/05/2025 12:47

Personally I absolutely love Francesca

DeSoleil · 29/05/2025 12:47

Elena is beautiful.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 29/05/2025 13:02

I love Francesca

ImFineItsAllFine · 29/05/2025 13:14

I would pronounce Elena as Eh-lay-na unless told otherwise (because I had a Spanish friend Elena who said it like that) so yes I think you'd get pronunciation issues.

I like Francesca the best but Giulia is also lovely.

Moreteaandchocolate · 29/05/2025 13:17

Francesca is my favourite. Elena is lovely and I would say it the same as you.

WhereAreWeNow · 29/05/2025 13:18

All nice names but Francesca is my favourite. Beautiful name.

WhereAreWeNow · 29/05/2025 13:18

Also Frankie is a very cute nickname for a girl.

Also Frankie is a very cute nickname for a girl.

I think we would use Cecca/Cesca as nicknames.

I like Francesca but I don’t like Frankie.
I like Elena, but there are a lot of Eleanor’s, Ellie’s etc and some people will pronounce it wrong
Giulia is more unusual, it will confuse people here, but it is pretty sounding.
So, they all have pros and cons.

Gagamama2 · 29/05/2025 13:28

Francesca is absolutely beautiful!
how do you pronounce Guilia? Is it the same as Julia?
I’ve always been a bit salty we didn’t name our daughter Anastasia. Francesca gives me the same vibes, love it.

MsCactus · 29/05/2025 13:37

Love Francesca

PanderBare · 29/05/2025 16:19

how do you pronounce Guilia? Is it the same as Julia?
It's Giulia, and is very close to Julia.

This misspelling will happen a lot. It's my favourite of the 3 names though.
I'm not keen on Elena - nothing wrong with it but El- names seem to be everywhere

OopsieeDaisy · 29/05/2025 23:16

Francesca is beautiful and I love the nn Cesca!
Elena is lovely but I would have pronounced it Eh-lay-na.
I’m less keen on Giulia and I think you would find it got confused with Julia a lot.

user2848502016 · 29/05/2025 23:21

I like Elena best but yeah could be pronounced a few different ways in UK.
Francesca is really pretty too, love Cesca as a nickname

AnneMarieW · 29/05/2025 23:41

Francesca overall for an easier life imo. Cesca is definitely the nicer nn I think.

Elena is most likely to get “Eh-lay-na” in the UK imo as that’s the common pronunciation in the USA and it’s a familiar name from American TV programmes here. And the “Eh-len-ah” pronunciation will risk the more common Eleanor spelling as not everyone here pronounces the “nor” (depending on accent.)

And while Julia has rarely been in the Top 100 in the UK, it’s still a classic name (and that spelling very familiar here from Shakespeare, classic novels etc) -so I think she’d regularly get the Julia spelling rather than Giulia. Unfortunately I suspect even “spelt the Italian way” will get some blank looks - she’s going to need to regularly spell her name if you go for it.

Btw have you perhaps considered Gaia? So popular in Italy but surprisingly underused here. But more and more people seem aware of the spelling and pronunciation (thanks to the names environmental imagery) so it shouldn’t cause any hassle imo.

Elena

Pemba · 30/05/2025 05:37

They're all lovely names but you realise there are a few different pronunciations for Elena? I have known two of them over the last 45 years in the UK and they were both said as El-AY-na. People seem to be a bit less familiar with the Italian pronunciation.

Giulia I always wondered about, is it said the same as Julia? I would have guessed that it started with a 'Zh' sound, like the way French people pronounce Julie? But I don't know Italian.

People will probably get used to whichever one you choose though.

sesquipedalian · 30/05/2025 05:44

Definitely Francesca (and Cesca is a sweet abbreviation). Not likely to be mis-spelt or mis-pronounced and a lovely name.

RedBeech · 30/05/2025 06:14

I love Francesca.

Elena is beautiful but Ellie is a very common name now, if that matters to you.

Less keen on Giulia.
