All of those boy names are grandad names.

But they've been in constant use for a lot longer than the current crop of girls' names. There are Freddys and Georges who are in their twenties, but the Ada, Ava, Maude brigade are almost all toddlers/primary age. So the older names for boys have been around so long that they are now 'modern' whereas the girls seem to still be 'sounding' old.

NearlyThere91 · 28/05/2025 14:15

Arlo I think, but it's an ok name

lilaclemon · 28/05/2025 14:58

But that would be a transgression of the Unwritten Law.
I personally am dying for time to cycle around and give us Jane, Janet, Carol, Margaret, Susan, John, David, Stephen, Paul, Andrew, RIchard, Geoff and wild crazy eccentric names like those!

I know a toddler Carol

When my son was little his nursery and primary was full of..
Harry
Joshua
Alfie
Jack
Chloe
Ellie
Molly.
I should imagine they are still very popular names, though I know three people that have named their recent babies Teddy. I also have Come across two little girls called Athena, It’s a name I’ve never heard of.

VibeCurator · 01/06/2025 23:03

Babies- Evie, Arthur and Arlo, Isla. Arlo seemed to pop up out of nowhere? And Arthur just suddenly went from underused to very, very popular.

Teens- Lily. Everywhere. So so many Lilys.

20-30s- Chloe, Amy, Olivia, Lauren

Also middle names… generic fillers Louise/Anne/Jane now replaced with Mae/May/Rose

VibeCurator · 01/06/2025 23:07

20-something men- Josh, Matt, Tom, Luke

ThePussy · 01/06/2025 23:16

I have an Ottilie. She’s in her mid 20s. It was unheard of when we named her. It’s a family name, and she was named after a great aunt.

Common baby names now - I’m a bit out of the loop but I know three small Olivia’s, too many Evie/Ava/Evas to mention, and a plethora of Lily/Lilly/Lilis.

maximalistmaximus · 01/06/2025 23:40

You’ve never heard of Athena?!

scalt · 02/06/2025 08:24

I know a lot of young girls called Freya, and Sienna.

Redflamingos · 02/06/2025 09:03

I know too many adult Steves, Toms and Dave’s….

And way too many young Ollies, Alfies and Theos

Some of them even share the same surname!

waxymoron · 02/06/2025 09:23

I'm not happy about the resurgence of Maisie and it being considered a dodgy name! Our 37 year old is maisie and no one used it then!! Grrr

ChocolateCinderToffee · 03/06/2025 18:18

All the Evie Ava Eve Emily Amelia Ellie-type names. Olivia has been most popular since forever and I don't understand why.

For boys, Kayden, Jayden, Jack. I'm not suggesting people choose yooneek names, but there are hundreds to choose from.

Biscuitsneeded · 03/06/2025 18:32

I'm sad to see this. I have a Theo, but he's 18, and when we named him we didn't know any others and genuinely thought we'd found a great name. Now it seems they are everywhere. I still think it's a lovely name and it suits him, but I don't like the thought of it becoming the Darren of its day!

AngelaBB · 03/06/2025 19:32

I do sympathise. I called my daughter Evie in 1983 and felt happy that I had found a different name. I cannot believe how popular it has become.

Emanwenym · 03/06/2025 19:34

@waxymoron ,I don't think it's dodgy. Isn't it from Margaret? A friend has a Maisie now in her 20s.

@Biscuitsneeded , you loved the name and chose it when it was about the 73 rd most popular name for boys. Now there are thousands of Theos and Theodores registered every year, you were ahead of the trend.
Babies called Theo in England & Wales since 1996

"On 30 May 2006, Walcott became England's youngest-ever senior football player, aged 17 years and 75 days.[8] " probably has something to do with it.
