You just can’t tell what is going to become really popular. My daughter, Evie, was born in 1983 and virtually unheard of then.

Jack, Harry, Noah, Theo, Leo

Evie, Ava, Isla, Sophie, Margot.

Never met an Ottilie in real life though, only ever hear it on MN.

I taught one Ottilie who’d be about 12 or 13 by now.

I have a baby myself and at one baby group there were THREE Ottilies! Out of maybe 20 kids so probably about 10 girls. All would be about 1 now.

At another baby group there were 2 Bernies, and a colleague of mine has just called her baby Bernie.

It's strange, all the other 'popular on MN' names are popular in real life where I live, but for some reason not Ottilie. So there's a tiny (and irrational) part of my brain that's convinced it's not actually a real name at all 😂

I’m sure Evie was a fresh and memorable name back in 1983 and your Evie didn’t have to add her surname initials to her name.

But why are parents STILL choosing it today when there are SOO many Evies out there already??

Around me the girls all seem to be coming in with very old names Ada, Mabel, Maud, Dotty, there's one Bertha (poor soul) although I'm still waiting for my first Doris.

Doesn't seem to apply to the boys though. They are all Alfie, Albie, Freddy, George, Harry type names.

All of those boy names are grandad names.

Because it's a lovely name?

This thread feels goady. We've all got feelings about names, many personal.

You never know if the person you're communicating with has a loved one with those names. I'm sure plenty will be happy with the name they've given their child.

Perhaps get a hobby?

Or people could be less sensitive about the opinions people who they will never meet have regarding names?

The only people who get upset about these threads are the ones whose baby names appear on them frequently 😆

You know what they say about people who refer to others as too sensitive.

How many mum's on here will have those names for their kids. A fair amount I'd say.

We're having different experiences here. 🙏

You've got an Arlo and an Evie, haven't you? And are planning on Otillie for the next one.

No, it’s a name that is fashionable and some people therefore currently find “lovely”.

Sharon and Tracey were equally fashionable and “lovely” once.

Pleaseshutthefuckup · 27/05/2025 17:43

@CapitalAtRisk is Arlo on the top list? I have never met one yet.

I love the name Evie.

Edited to add: no more kids for me. I'm done with this parenting fookery 🤷😙

Is Bernie male or female? I know of an Ottilie who is known as Tilly.

Do they say “you should be kind, hun”?

Incidentally it does seem that you’re correct, we really are having different experiences using this website with millions of users, all with their own opinions.

All 3 Bernie babies are male. Actually how I think about I know an adult Bernie in her 40s who is female - short for Bernadette I think.

All the Ottilies I know are shortened to Ottie rather than Tilly. I guess Tilly might be confused with Matilda

17caterpillars1mouse · 27/05/2025 19:02

Matilda by far here followed by Aria and Harper

Lots of Arthur's and Alfie's

Emanwenym · 27/05/2025 19:38

I really like Bernadette.

SwedishEdith · 27/05/2025 20:04

Yes, I assumed the Bernies would be girls. As well as Bernadette, I knew a Bernadine Bernie. Where's it come from to make it popular as a boys name because Bernard isn't very nice?

comoatoupeira · 27/05/2025 20:11

What are the top 'popular on MN' names then, apart from Ottilie?

Emanwenym · 27/05/2025 20:13

Margot, Clara.

So many boys called Ronnie/Reggie or Alfie/Archie/Albie round here. Joshua, Joseph and Jake are very popular as well.

Lots of girls called Isabelle, Charlotte, Ella, Evie, too.

Hoogey · 27/05/2025 20:20

bostonbabe5 · 26/05/2025 18:24

With Ronnie & Reggie close behind

Fucking awful names...why??

SoSoju · 27/05/2025 21:17

I think it depends where you live.

Henry (which is in the top ten) is incredibly popular here. A couple of my friends named their boys Henry. There’s also 2 in dds reception class and I’ve met at least another 5 across various playgroups/parties etc over the last year. Albie, Arlo, Thomas, Arthur and Kit are popular too.
On the other hand, I’ve only ever come across one Leo and one Noah, which are also in the top ten.

Poppy, Ella, Violet, Millie, Eve/Evie and Margot are popular names here but there seems to be more variety with the girls names.
