I find “cute” a useful word that covers a lot of situations…..
The only time I have said something was at the end of a weekend on call, when I told some new parents that this was the fifth Ruby I had been involved with in the previous 72 hours and they may wish to consider how many were likely to finish up in the same class!

@khaa2091 😂 yeah “cute” does cover lots 😂 I’m sure you hear all sorts!
I imagine when there’s a bit of a name trend it must be hard not to tell the parents to reconsider! We live in a pretty small town with only 1 primary school and a few years ago I knew of 4 ‘Zara’s born within about 4/5 months. The mums weren’t friends but all grew up here so definitely knew of each other. I always thought that was so odd 😂 Id have definitely changed my name choice after hearing of the second one 😂

It was a conversation about a choice between 2 names, and I thought it was relevant to the decision making.

Fair enough, I thought you just meant it was a ‘we’ve decided to call her Ruby!’ sort of conversation.

I have never been bothered or troubled by the fact that more than one child might share my children’s name, I must admit

No duplicates amongst the girls but lots of nature names - Ivy, Rose, Rowan (m and f), Lily, Winter, Hazel, etc.

All the boys are called William.

DD is 3.

Edited

Can I ask very roughly where you are in the country? (As William is top of my own boys name list).

It’s so interesting because of the popular but very classic boys and girls names I only know one toddler age William, one George, one James, one Elizabeth, one Alice, one Charlotte etc

But any “nickname” style name seems much more popular - if I count toddler groups as well as DD’s nursery then names like Freddie, Charlie, Harry, Rosie etc we do know at least a couple of (in fact the “ie/y” ending overall seems the most popular for names in the baby/toddler age group here).

@khaa2091 Completely off topic but out of interest - how do you react if you think the name that parents have picked is awful? 😅

I just remember a midwife (not the one I had been looked after by) coming in not long after I’d delivered my DS and asking if we had named him yet. When I told her the name she responded with “Oh, that’s a lovely strong ‘proper’ boys name. I’ve delivered 2 poor kids called Fox this week and had to remind myself that I’m a midwife and not a vet!” 🫠
I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the poor parents of the kids and wondered how she’d reacted when they told her!

I remember when DD was born and one of the hospital staff asked her name.
Me: Amber
Her: Emma? Oh, that’s a lovely name
Me: No, Amber
Her: Oh. Oh well, I suppose one name’s as good as another…

@RustyBear 😂😂 not the reaction you’d hoped for I’m sure! Amber is a lovely name 😊

Although, I have to admit that I worked in a shop for a few years that offered personalisation on some products and some of the names I had to put on items were awful 😂 I do feel like midwives must really have to practice their poker face!

LegoLandslide · 19/05/2025 06:56

@AnneMarieW NE England, although there are just as many Williams amongst my relatives who are W London and along the South Coast. Bit of a running joke in our house that you can't even distinguish the Williams by surname or mother's name.

I suspect it's mostly one of those coincidences where there aren't all that many, we just know a high proportion. DS has a name that was given to 98 children the year he was born and there was another one at playgroup.
