Hi there

Hoping for some thoughts on the following boy and girl names (mainly how you think they are pronounced upon reading them and how they sound to a non-turkish ear)?

We have lived in UK our entire lives and are from a Turkish background and have a son with a Turkish name. Would greatly appreciate any feedback! I like names with e’s and r’s as you can probably tell :-)

Boy names:

Reyan / Reyyan
Evren
Kerem
Reis

Girl names:

Meryem
Serenay
Esra
Serin
Dilara

Thank you! 🙏🏻

Ooh Turkish names are lovely

That’s very kind of you to say - there are alot of gorgeous sounding ones but many contain turkish letters which I won’t get into 😂

Lovely names! Id imagine that most English people would assume Reis = Rhys/Reece though.

have you ruled out Emre? (Lovely name and meaning)

BangersAndGnash · 09/05/2025 11:40

Reyan / Reyyan: I would say Ray-en. But seems so close to Ryan and might be mistaken for a Ryan Yooneek name.

Evren - Ev-run , first syllable stress
Kerem - Ke-rem , ditto but it might be Ke-reeem
Reis - Reece , common uk name

Girl names:
Meryem - Like Miriam but with a e at the beginning . Lovely name
Serenay - like serenade without the d. Lovely name
Esra - Ezra, like the Hebrew boys name
Serin - Serin
Dilara - Dill-ara. Danger of being called delirious at school. My least favourite.

Lovely names. Is Reis pronounced Ray-ees? I like it.

I always liked Ruya for a girl with two dots above the u - means dream, I believe.

We aren’t worried about the names sounding too much like any other names, all names somehow sound like others in the grand scheme of things :-)
I wouldn't worry about it either but my name gets mixed up with a similar name sometimes, so I have to explain the spelling, and even get comments like 'Why did your parents not spell it properly?' (and worse)

Oh I can see that being a little annoying, with my name I have just resorted to spelling it over the phone instead of saying it each time I get asked my name as I know the immediate follow up question will be how to spell it as it’s so obscure in the UK even in Turkish circles 😂

I know an Esra, I’ve always thought it was a lovely name. And I knew her before I knew any Ezras, so Ezra to me sounds feminine because of that.

FlippityFloppityFlump · 09/05/2025 12:38

Serin is beautiful! Of your boys names I like Reyan

shockthemonkey · 09/05/2025 13:31

You very sensible steered clear of names with a C in their spelling. My friends Can and Genco are always having to correct people whose first zxposure to their names are in written form. Likewise you avoided soft Gs, another bullet dodged.

My favourites in your list are Reyan, Kerem (does not bring to mind Kermit the frog), Meryem and Serin.

Yes it is pronounced how you typed it, there is alot of emphasis put on the first half when pronounced the official way so it’s quite a “strong” name. I think I will place it in as a second name.

The meanings of the names are:

Meryem: Drop of the sea, beloved
Serenay: Moon at it’s prettiest
Dilara: Adorning the heart
Esra: To travel at night / night journey
Serin: Fresh / breezy weather (it’s a word name as serin is used to describe the weather)

Evren: Universe, cosmos, also the name of a Turkic Mythology Dragon
Kerem: Nobility, generosity, greatness
Reis: Leader, chief, captain
Reyan: Rich in water / well-watered

If that adds more meaning to them?

I like Serin and Kerem 👌🏻

Maxorias · 09/05/2025 22:28

My two favourite turkish names are Rüzgar and Aydin (I know it's spelt with a dotless i but I don't have that on my keyboard). I also like Ata and Aslan. And Ender, which also has cool connotations with the Ender's game book.

For girls I kinda like Ayse but the pronunciation will get butchered. I had a colleague named Aslihan and I think it's beautiful too. Nadia is also very international.

Teoman could work well in the UK if you use Teo as a diminutive. Although it makes me think of the singer.

And Nil, also very international and easy to say.

In your list my favourites are Reis and Dilara, also like Esra.

Thanks for the suggestions ☺️ All great names.

We are familiar with all Turkish names and the ones we have narrowed it down to are the ones mentioned as they are more our style (we like the r’s and e’s combined in names mostly).

Kerem I love! And reyen

esra, dilara serin also excellent

Ferretedaway · 09/05/2025 22:38

Serin is my favourite (serins are pretty birds which are part of the finch family )

Reyyan and Kerem are my favourite of your boys.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 09/05/2025 22:47

Serin is lovely OP. Sounds to me a bit like Seren - the welsh girl’s name meaning Star ⭐

Reyan is cute for a boy.

Chocolate85 · 09/05/2025 22:52

I love Evren and Serin, really nice names.

PrincessOfPreschool · 09/05/2025 22:54

I like Reyyan with double 'y' as it looks foreign but still pronounce able (I would say Ray-arn) . I think if I saw Reis, I would think it's an imaginative spelling of 'Reece'. I think Evren would also be easy to pronounce.

I like Serenay because I think it's straightforward to say and sounds like Serenade, which is lovely word and meaning in English. Maryam and versions of it are too common.

PrincessOfPreschool · 09/05/2025 22:55

Ezra is a boys name on the rise so wouldn't use it for a girl.

Emanwenym · 09/05/2025 23:13

@SummerDaysOnTheWay , Seren is 'SERR-enn' and it's the Welsh word for star being used as a name. I don't know any Welsh-speaking parents who named their DD it.

@PrincessOfPreschool , OP was thinking of the Turkish girl's name Esra not the Hebrew/biblical name Ezra.
(Ezra in Welsh is Esra.)
I like Serenay because I think it's straightforward to say and sounds like Serenade It's more like SERR-enn-eye

AnonAnonmystery · 10/05/2025 08:07

How about Aydin for a boys name ( similar to Aiden in a way) but Turkish all the same. I like all your names to be honest and congratulations. Sometimes when you see your baby for the first time it’s easy to pick from the list. Enjoy 😊

AnonAnonmystery · 10/05/2025 08:09

Oh and also Ayla for a girl, old Turkish name but I think very adaptable for the UK
