Jessica/Jessie

Hi,

I have an Isobel Rose already

We have struggled to agree on names this time round, we are having another girl. When deciding on our daughters name we had Jessica on the list, when we told our daughter about this baby she automatically and out of nowhere starting referring to her as baby Jessie ( she didn't know about the potential for her name to be Jessica and she is only 2!). So we think we are going to go with it!

Question is would you name the baby

Jessica Anne
Or
Jessie Anne

I always thought a longer name that we could shorten (so with Isobel it was going to be shortened to Issy, but no one calls her that and she continues to be called Isobel by everyone).

But now I'm leaning towards naming her Jessie so that it doesn't need explaining/shortening.

What do people think?

My niece is a Jessie and registered so. Never a Jessica. She hates it if people call her Jessica as it’s not her name at all

murasaki · 25/04/2025 13:13

Jessica, then there's a choice. You can use Jessie day to day. If you call her Jessie, everyone will assume Jessica anyway. I know a Harry and every one assumes he's really a Henry, he isn't.

MauraLabingi · 25/04/2025 13:15

If you're less keen on Jessica, I would personally go with Jess, nn Jessie. Jessie is a beautiful name but quite "cute" and I personally as an adult am glad I have a serious first name and a cute nn. Gives me options. Jess is strong and beautiful sounding, and easily becomes Jessie if that's the nn you'd like to call her at first.

Moreteaandchocolate · 25/04/2025 13:23

I love the name Jessica nn Jessie! I think it would take more explaining to have to say that Jessie is her full name as people will assume it’s short for Jessica!

Reddelilah · 25/04/2025 13:35

Jessie Anne is lovely!

JoyousEagle · 25/04/2025 13:45

I generally prefer having the longer name on the birth certificate, and then shortening it as per your/their preference.

So I’d do Jessica, shorten it to Jessie or Jess.

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 25/04/2025 13:50

Jessica Anne on the birth certificate, then call her Jessie. It's nice to have the option of a "serious" name to use at formal occasions.

MellowPinkDeer · 25/04/2025 13:52

i know Jessie is the girl spelling but I think it’s really a boys name ( Jesse) I much prefer Jessica ( Jess for short)

Pemba · 25/04/2025 13:53

Jessica is lovely, seems more like a full name, and then she gets the choice whether to be Jessie or Jessica day-to-day. Or Jess or Jessa.

Or there's also the names Jessamine or Jessamy if that appeals? A bit more unusual and could equally be shortened to Jessie. Just don't let people spell Jessie as Jesse (boy's name), I've noticed that some people don't seem to get the difference.

NinjaMad · 25/04/2025 13:56

Jessica Anne for sure. She can then decide to go by Jessie if she likes.
Have you thought of Jocasta Daisy/Lilac/Ivy/Poppy/Bluebelle?
Jessica Bluebelle is really cute!😍

Reddelilah · 25/04/2025 14:26

Jessie is much nicer and more feminine than Jess which sounds so harsh.

i’d use Jessica or Jessie with Anne as middle name

Rockmehardplace · 25/04/2025 14:30

Jessica

pilates · 25/04/2025 14:49

Jessica on birth certificate
Jessie or Jess nn

BethDuttonYeHaw · 25/04/2025 14:50

Please go with Jessica rather than Jessie for the birth certificate.

You can always shorten it but it gives her choices when she is older.

Whoarethoseguys · 25/04/2025 15:07

I would go with Jessica . It gives her options later.

OpenDoorMuriel · 25/04/2025 15:52

Jessica Anne sounds like Jessica Ran 😊 accent depending… bear in mind with whatever your surname is. Lovely name though

Hortus · 25/04/2025 16:09

I would call her Jessica, it's a proper name, Jessie isn't. Jesse is a male name, Jessie is a made up female name. It also sounds as if it's trying to be cutesy.
I have a Jessica who is in her 30s, she decided at age 8 she wanted to be referred to as Jess, it wouldn't have been my choice but of course I agreed and we have called her Jess since then.
At school there were 5 Jessicas in her year, every single one called themselves Jess. I've met several adult Jessicas who call themselves Jess. Not one has shortened their name to Jessie.
So even if you went with Jessie most people would think her name was Jessica, and it would probably be shortened to Jess anyway.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 25/04/2025 16:27

Jessica

It has a slightly different feel and it gives her both options, which is what your elder daughter has

BoleynMemories13 · 25/04/2025 16:30

I love the name Jessica. Jessie is a nice nickname but definitely use Jessica on the BC. Your eldest is only 2 you say, so plenty of time for her to still be Issy yet. Nicknames often fall in to usage as they get older.

Jessie is more limiting and infantile. Jessica nn Jessie is lovely.

modgepodge · 25/04/2025 16:33

I’d go with Jessica, or maybe jessamine. To me Jessie is a short version not a full name.

my child has a name on their birth certificate we almost never call them, they’re always known by the shortened version. People are often surprised to hear it’s short for something! (But it’s a very unusual name - I think most people would assume Jessie was Jessica really.)

ForPinkBiscuit · 25/04/2025 16:53

Thanks everyone for the input, seems Jessica gets the vote!

And for Jessie being infantile/cutesie I have met older ladies with the name Jessie and it seems it was quite a popular girl's name in the past so it definitely isn't new or just twist on the boys name Jesse.

But I do think I will go with the original thought of having the longer name with the ability to shorten/nickname as most have suggested.

Really helpful, thanks x

Jessie is a "proper" name in its own right. Not sure it came about only as a shortened form of Jessica.

Even if it did, nobody bats an eye at boys called Harry or Alfie who aren't actually officially Harolds or Alfreds 🤷‍♀️

Jessica is very 80s-sounding to me.

Sorry, this was meant to be in response to @Hortus

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 25/04/2025 20:24

I always thought Jessie was quite popular in Scotland.

I’d agree x

A member of my extended family is Jessalyn, which is nice.
