Jessica/Jessie

Hi,

I have an Isobel Rose already

We have struggled to agree on names this time round, we are having another girl. When deciding on our daughters name we had Jessica on the list, when we told our daughter about this baby she automatically and out of nowhere starting referring to her as baby Jessie ( she didn't know about the potential for her name to be Jessica and she is only 2!). So we think we are going to go with it!

Question is would you name the baby

Jessica Anne
Or
Jessie Anne

I always thought a longer name that we could shorten (so with Isobel it was going to be shortened to Issy, but no one calls her that and she continues to be called Isobel by everyone).

But now I'm leaning towards naming her Jessie so that it doesn't need explaining/shortening.

What do people think?

Jessie is a lovely name.

I don’t like Jessica, all I hear is the the word Sick in the middle

I always thought Jessie was quite popular in Scotland.

There's even a Gaelic version!

I have a 1 year old Jessica. I had the same dilemma as you. Now I'm sooo glad I chose the full version. I use all of the names Jessica, Jessie and most often Jess. I like that she has the choice when she's older.

Jessica nn Jessie

Jessica is very elegant and Jessie v sparky, so she can choose her vibe

It will be annoying for her if her sister has Isobel/Izzy/Bella options and she doesn’t.

ThelastRolo20 · 18/05/2025 19:57

Just jumping in to say I have a baby Jessica and it's nice having the options! We alternate between Jessica/ Jessie/ Jess ❤️ great name choice 😉

Yes, Jessica or Jessamine

Hohofortherobbers · 18/05/2025 21:08

Definitely Jessica, then nickname her at your will Smile

We have a Jessie who has just turned 18, registered as Jessie as we preferred it to Jessica.
Never had any issues with people referring to her as Jessica, some of her close friends call her Jess but in my opinion go with the name you wish people to call her.

In my (yes bias) opinion it’s a lovely name that never really dates x

It’s my name and glad I was given the full name as I’ve never felt like a Jess or Jessie. With the full name DD will have a choice as she gets older. I think it’s a timeless name that can be adapted to suit different personalities. I also know a Jessica who goes by Cesca.

cityrat79 · 18/05/2025 21:37

We have a Jessie - named at the time every other child was a Jessica. I also didn’t like the SICK noise in the middle of the name. It has a good Scottish heritage at its heart (as a proper standalone name) and has nods to Shakespeare, as well as being a bit less stuffy than Jessica. She can still shorten it to Jess if she wants to.

She does occasionally get called Jessica, which she hates, but no biggie to correct it.

Pemba · 18/05/2025 23:19

Jessica isn't 'stuffy'! . As for 'the sick noise in the middle', well you can make a lot of bits of names sound like something else negative, if you are determined enough...

Re Shakespeare: there was a Jessica in The Merchant of Venice, I wasn't aware of a Jessie in any of the plays?

Nothing wrong with Jessie though, it's just Jessica gives more options.

If you are going to call her Jessie from birth, put Jessie on her birth certificate in my opinion. My DD is Eleanor but known as Ellie from birth and we wanted to give her the longer name so she had a choice when older. She’s now 17 and absolutely hates the name Eleanor and wishes we had just put Ellie on her birth certificate as everything official eg Drs, passport, driving licence etc has Eleanor on it which she hates! That being said Jessica and Jessie are both nice names.
