I’m due in 4 weeks with DD. DH is Welsh and I am Cornish, we’re trying to decide between Merryn and Gwen. What’s the Mumsnet verdict?

Oooh they're both great!!!! Tough choice. But I think Gwen just about edges it for me.

Nsky62 · 25/04/2025 01:31

Sorry neither

Moreteaandchocolate · 25/04/2025 06:01

I love them both - really struggled to choose! I went for Gwen because I just love the idea of a little Gwen!

My nanna was called Ceinwen (Gwen) so I chose Gwen! Baby Gwen sounds adorable x

WWomble · 25/04/2025 06:24

Both lovely.i would choose Merryn.

BoleynMemories13 · 25/04/2025 06:26

I much prefer Merryn. It's a very sunny sounding name. Merry is a sweet nickname.

I don't like Gwen. Despite knowing a little one, it still screams old lady to me. It's a harsh sound, not pretty to my ears.

Megan would combine the sounds of both, if that appeals?

SquigglePigs · 25/04/2025 07:48

I love Merryn. Not so keen on Gwen.

RaspberryBeretxx · 25/04/2025 08:03

Merryn for me, it's beautiful

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 25/04/2025 08:16

Really like them both

Possibly Gwen?!

Actually no - I like the possibility of Merry as a nn - if she likes it - so Merryn.

hattie43 · 25/04/2025 08:18

merryn definitely, don’t like Gwen at all , sounds too old lady and clunky when you say it

PicklesMacGraw · 25/04/2025 08:24

Merryn is lovely but Gwen is really nice too.

Marylou62 · 25/04/2025 08:28

Depends where you live...
I was only discussing this yesterday with a friend who loves one of those but lives near a huge meat processing plant that uses one of those names... trying to be subtle and not put you off either name as they are both lovely..(Cornwall here too)
What about
Lowenna
Megan
Carys
Sennan

NefiBlw · 25/04/2025 08:31

Gwen definitely. I'm not keen on Merryn - seems a bit masculine/unisex.

DinaofCloud9 · 25/04/2025 08:37

Merryn as Gwen is such a frumpy name.

stickygotstuck · 25/04/2025 08:40

Both beautiful.

First and middle? Merryn Gwen?

user1492757084 · 25/04/2025 09:34

Gwen is chic, smart and more athletic than Merryn.

LittleGreenDuck · 25/04/2025 13:13

Merryn. Beautiful name. Gwen reminds me of Gwendoline Mary Lacey.

rainingsnoring · 25/04/2025 14:06

I really like both, although I would use the full name Gwendolyn with Gwen as a nn option.

cantpullthetrigger · 25/04/2025 14:21

I knew a female Merlyn which could be another option for you.

LetTheWindBlowBackYourHair · 25/04/2025 14:55

Definitely Merryn for me. Gwen is pretty popular in my part of Wales for old ladies and small children, although the new Gwen's tend to be Gwenni/Gwennie/Gweni. It's just a bit dull to me.

Merryn is gorgeous and I think perhaps a bit of a stronger link with Cornwall as well (though that might just be in my head!)

Merryn sounds bright and cheery, Gwen is nice but a bit ordinary to me.

Congratulations!!

Numbersaremything · 25/04/2025 14:59

I like the Cornish Arms, so Merryn for me. My Auntie Gwen lived at Carlyon Bay and looked down on those who didn't!

deeahgwitch · 25/04/2025 15:02

Neither. Sorry

mathanxiety · 25/04/2025 15:14

Definitely Merryn.

I can't help thinking of Mrs. Doyle from Father Ted when I hear the name Gwen. 'Ah g'wan, g'wan, g'wan, g'wan, g'wan...'
