Help Margot or Monroe or something else

We have loved the name Margot but in the past 18 months or so we feel it has become incredibly popular and not so sure anymore.
Is Monroe a good alternative?
We also like:
Darcy
Ophelia (Fifi/Effie)
Winifred (Winnie)
Stella
Clementine (Clemmy)
Primrose (Prim)
Celeste (Cece)
Penelope
Dolly
We are really stuck but we keep going back to Margot but just not sure anymore, really worried there will be multiple in her class and be known as Margot D.
Honest thoughts and suggestions appreciated!
We are looking for a fun but beautiful name.

Margot is lovely. Monroe is a surname / doctrine - neither of which are nice for a small baby.

I really don’t get the angst about there possibly being another child with the same name in a class at school. Pick the name you love

softlyfallsthesnow · 21/04/2025 20:42

Margot. You obviously like it more than any others and it's a nice name which has been around for longer than the current rise in popularity.
I'm not sure she'd be all that keen on being called Prim.

Reddelilah · 21/04/2025 20:42

I prefer Celeste and Ophelia

Margot will start to sound dated soon as it falls out of fashion again imo

Kellybonita · 21/04/2025 20:43

I really like monroe! It's unusual.

There are loads of margots around

Darkambergingerlily · 21/04/2025 20:44

Love all the names except monroe. Awful

GoldenRosebee · 21/04/2025 20:44

I like Winifred and Penelope more than Margot, but I don't think she will end up as Margot D. It's just trendy, not overly popular, as most names are less popular now than names of previous generations were.

Popquorn · 21/04/2025 20:45

Margot and Penelope are lovely from your list

Kissedbyfire1 · 21/04/2025 20:45

I know a boy called Monroe so to me it’s not a girl’s name - could be gender neutral.
What about Marion? Marianne?

PrincessOfPreschool · 21/04/2025 20:45

I love Margot. I only know one who is in her 60s and I work with small children. I think it's a classic. Ophelia is a bit of the moment as is Darcy. I love Stella too. Lois is a lovely name and Priscilla might be in your vein, but Margot is beautiful.

Moreteaandchocolate · 21/04/2025 20:46

Margot is lovely - I don’t actually know any Margot’s! It’s number 44 in the charts and less than one in 500 babies are called Margot, so it’s very unlikely you’d have two in a class.

From your other ideas I love Penelope, and like Darcy and Stella.

Kellybonita · 21/04/2025 20:47

Loads of celebrities have named their baby "margot" recently.

YourWinter · 21/04/2025 20:49

Darcy is nice but I dislike all the others. Monroe would be a terrible first name.

Kellybonita · 21/04/2025 20:50

Everyone would remember someone called monroe

ViolaPlains · 21/04/2025 20:54

Monroe Bergdorf is enough to put me off the name.

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 21/04/2025 20:56

Ophelia is beautiful.

How about…

Paloma
Estelle / Estella
Clara
Marnie
Eloise
Cleo
Lois
Sylvie
Violet
Goldie

Popquorn · 21/04/2025 20:57

Would Marilyn give you the Margot and Monroe nod?

Kellybonita · 21/04/2025 20:58

I know a marilyn. She's a serious sensible doctor, and I always think that the name is quite strange on her

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 21/04/2025 21:00

I love Margot too but yes there are loads of them

Monroe reads like a Marilyn homage which is weird. I spose you could spell it Monro if you like hillwalking, but even in Scotland it’s more of a middle name.

How about Clio, Marianne, Meredith (Merry)?

Darcy - it’s the Tracy of the 2020s
Ophelia (Fifi/Effie) - too tragic. Octavia?
Winifred (Winnie) - ok, bit twee
Stella - I like it
Clementine (Clemmy) - same as Winifred
Primrose (Prim) - ghastly. Why would you want your daughter to be prim?
Celeste (Cece) - it’s ok but it’s a birth control pill. How about Cecile/Cecily/Celia/Cecilia which also give you Cece
Penelope - I don’t like penny which feels a bit inevitable. Felicity?

martinisforeveryone · 21/04/2025 21:12

Monroe reminds me of the Jack who in my opinion, has written cookery books but can't actually cook anything decent and who has an unpleasant online presence against anyone who might disagree with them. Or the Munro mountain range. So not the best associations for a baby, for me personally.

Given the list of names you like, how about Carys? It means loved and could be shortened to Carrie.

A lot depends on your family name and how names flow together.

NeedSomeComfy · 21/04/2025 21:20

We chose an unusual name (DH and I are from different countries so chose a name that reflected the other culture to the one we live in). Had never met a child with the same name in this country.
Lo and behold, my daughter went to school, had another girl in the same class with the same name, and became best friends with her 💁💁. It's fine! I really wouldn't let that possibility turn you off from a name you love.
(I like Margot by the way).

LambriniBobInIsleworthISeesYa · 21/04/2025 21:22

Margot is lovely. Monroe is a surname, so please don’t saddle a child with that for a first name.

As others have said, who cares if she’s got the same name as someone else? And for what it’s worth, I have the most common forename for a girl in England and Wales in the year that I was born. I grew up in a large English city and went to a four form entry primary school and then an eight form entry secondary. There were no girls with the same name as me in my primary year at all, and only two in my secondary (and I was never in a class with either of them). So popular doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll ever even encounter someone else with their name throughout their whole school career.

Energe · 21/04/2025 21:22

Monroe is awful but DD has a friend called Marilyn which is pretty unusual these days.

user2848502016 · 21/04/2025 21:39

Margot is lovely, I don’t think it’s overly popular.
Don’t like Monroe for a girl at all sorry

From your list I like
Ophelia
Clementine
Primrose (probably like this more than Margot actually)
But if you love Margot go for it, you can never predict what her classmates will be called

reallyalurker · 21/04/2025 21:42

I'd stick with Margot if it's the one you keep coming back to. The stats say that 1025 babies were named that in 2023, and there were 288,031 female babies born, so that is 0.36% of female births, or 3.6 girls in a thousand. So still fairly rare.

It is having a moment, and is one of the names discussed in the ONS report under popular culture, section 4.

You could consider Marlow / Marlowe / Marlo, which is much lower in the rankings. I love Winifred, which is about a tenth as popular as Margot (105 babies in 2023), but it's your child and it sounds like you love Margot.

I would have assumed Monroe was a boys name.

Margot is fine. From your list, I like Clementine and Primrose. Penelope is also gaining popularity.
