Help Margot or Monroe or something else

We have loved the name Margot but in the past 18 months or so we feel it has become incredibly popular and not so sure anymore.
Is Monroe a good alternative?
We also like:
Darcy
Ophelia (Fifi/Effie)
Winifred (Winnie)
Stella
Clementine (Clemmy)
Primrose (Prim)
Celeste (Cece)
Penelope
Dolly
We are really stuck but we keep going back to Margot but just not sure anymore, really worried there will be multiple in her class and be known as Margot D.
Honest thoughts and suggestions appreciated!
We are looking for a fun but beautiful name.

Margot's very cute but there are a few around. Primrose also seems to be on the up. I liked Celeste (Cece) until someone pointed out it's a birth control pill 😂 There was a Celine at my DD's nursery which I thought was quite cute and could also be Cece.
I LOVE Penelope. A friend of a friend called her DD that ~10 years ago and since then I have always thought how lovely it is. I haven't heard of many others either!

Margot is a beautiful name, also love Clementine and Penelope, all strong names

GiddyCrab · 21/04/2025 22:01

Why don't you have Marilyn instead of Monroe?
Monroe also reminds me of the word mongol. Not nice at all.
There are lots of Margots atm.
Margaret?

Lilah

Augusta

Marjorie

Jeff Lewis, of the American tv show "Flipping Out", has a daughter named Monroe, together with his former partner Gage Edward.

Winifred, Stella, Clementine and Celeste are my favourites and less likely to be numerous in a class. However probably also be the only Margot in class on average.

estelle
audrey
willa
mabel
eloise
giselle
cleo
juno
coralie
Esther
beatrix

Margot is ok but I think v trendy. I think I prefer Montpellier but it does seem like a homage to Marilyn so if that’s not your vibe I wouldn’t go for it

I prefer Celeste, Penelope and Stella from your list.

Other ideas:

Serena
Lottie
Ianthe
Francine
Helena
Nora
Una
Romily

Margot - trendy
Monroe - awful
Darcy - dated and downmarket
Ophelia (Fifi/Effie) - not keen, too tragic. Fifi and Effie are dogs' names
Winifred (Winnie) - like
Stella - like
Clementine (Clemmy) - don't like but it's ok
Primrose (Prim) - don't like but it's ok
Celeste (Cece) - Babar the Elephant's wife. Cece is dreadful
Penelope - fine
Dolly - like

Marlo is awful. I don't like Carys. Lilah is likely to be one of many Lila, Lilah, Lylas.

Viviennemary · 22/04/2025 08:37

Monroe?? For a girl. Beyond dire. Margot is a very nice name.

2chocolateoranges · 22/04/2025 08:43

Margot is a bit twee for me, I do know a couple of boys called Munro but we are in Scotland, Monroe spelling is dire.

TappyGilmore · 22/04/2025 08:53

I really like Monroe, I know a Monroe (girl) and always thought how cool the name is.

I actually like most of the names on your list but not the shortened versions that you have. Primrose is a lovely name but Prim is hideous. Clementine is a lovely name but Clemmy is awful. Ophelia is nice but not Fifi or Effie. Interesting that you didn’t mention Penny as an abbreviation for Penelope; that would be nice!

BillieNoM888 · 22/04/2025 08:55

How about Juno?

MayaPinion · 22/04/2025 09:00

I love Penelope and would call her Nel as an alternative to Penny.

Cecelia is a great name and has the vibes you’re going for. I’ve only ever met one in real life.

Margot has 70’s vibes so how about names like Sylvia, Marion/Marianne, Frances/Francesca, Lynne/Lynette or Cynthia?

NCfor24 · 22/04/2025 09:01

Margot.
It's your favourite and you keep coming back to it.
Of your other names I like Stella. Has a similar feel/era to me. I don't necessarily think your child will be in a class with another. As a registrar I must have registered 100s of babies but even the top 10 names don't actually come up that often!

HoopyGirl · 22/04/2025 12:48

Monroe is beautiful

Thoughts on your list;
Darcy - meh, my mind goes straight to mr darcy.
Ophelia (Fifi/Effie). ❤️
Winifred (Winnie)❤️

Stella - Artois lager. “Wife beater” as it’s nicknamed where I live.

Clementine (Clemmy) ❤️
Primrose (Prim) - nah, pretentious.

Celeste (Cece) - meh. cece is cute,
Penelope ❤️
Dolly - a dogs/ horse/ hamster name.

also Margot is a lovely name. Just because a name is in the top 10 or whatever doesn’t mean little one will have one in their class…Noah & Olivia were the most popular name in Scotland, I know one baby Noah and no Olivias.

Monroe was a victim of autocorrect to Montpelier!

BillieNoM888 · 22/04/2025 20:14

Montpelier is an improvement.

ArtistOfTheFloatingWorld · 22/04/2025 20:39

Margot, definitely.

Popular names are popular because people like them. That being said I have 3 kids in primary school and haven't met any Margots so they aren't that common in my world!
