We have finally narrowed it down with a week to go until we meet DD!
We have found this so hard this time around. DD1 is Orla. Please can you tell me what you think of the following 3 names…

  1. Lana
  2. Heidi
  3. Olivia
middle name will be Elizabeth. We are after something beautiful, not too fussy and something that will stand her well when she’s an adult and in a great career! I know many can judge a book by its cover so I’d love to know what comes to mind. please be kind - I’m very aware of the Lana issue however, one can do this with so many names it’s not a deal breaker for us. Thanks all!

Heidi is ok, but the one I know is always called Hides, which is not so great.
On balance Lana out of the 3, but keep looking.

mathanxiety · 19/04/2025 15:57

Orla and Alanna would be perfect together. Both are Irish names and have the same soft feel.

Alanna is a name derived from the Irish phrase roughly meaning 'beloved child'.

Other than Alanna I'd choose Lana, but spell it Layna if you want that pronunciation. If you want the 'Lahna' pronunciation I'd honestly choose Alanna.

fox919 · 19/04/2025 15:59

Heidi

GreyhoundGal1 · 19/04/2025 16:40

I prefer Alanna with Orla to Lana, but Heidi is still my favourite personally. It's a lot more common than it used to be (although not common but around #100 for the last 15 years), so I don't think a lot of the associations the older generations have with it will stand if that's the worry.

You could split the difference between the two and do Helena?

uncomfortablydumb60 · 19/04/2025 16:55

I like Heidi with Orla
Definitely wouldn’t have Orla and Olivia.
Friend of Irish heritage has Orla and Aoiffe

Velvetbee · 19/04/2025 17:18

Heidi or Alanna

Tarragonpie · 19/04/2025 17:37

Alanna is my favourite. You could still call her Lana for short if you want. There are a few spelling variations.

I don’t think Heidi goes with Orla at all, they’re just so different.
Not that names have to ‘go’ of course.

CarpetKnees · 19/04/2025 17:40

From your 3 (or 4 now) I'd go with Heidi.

Not keen on Lana, and, although Olivia is nice enough, I wouldn't give sisters the same initial.

Craftysue · 19/04/2025 17:42

I like Heidi best - I do like Olivia but it's quite a common name in my area.

Emanwenym · 19/04/2025 17:43

@mommyandmore , Alanna is Al-anna, but many will say it to rhyme with Lana. If you want 'Lana' use Lana.

SoOxon · 19/04/2025 17:50

Heidi is from Adelaide, Adelheid in German, Olivia Elizabeth is cumbersome,
Lana is del Rey. Sometimes it’s a good idea to wait and see your baby before you decide, for eg, you may think she looks like a Sophie or even a Clementine.

Alanna is ok. see good advice above ^

Thanks so much everyone! What do you think of Alanna?

Really like!

I’ve never heard Alanna pronounced Al-anna 🤔

LittleGreenDuck · 19/04/2025 19:44

Heidi, without a doubt.

PopThatBench · 19/04/2025 19:49

Heidi is a lovely name and goes best with Orla.
Lana is too similar to Orla.
Olivia is a very pretty name but very common.

I think Nina, Mabel, Hazel, Lottie, Hattie are also cute and suit the middle name and her sister’s name x

Fioratourer · 19/04/2025 21:12

Olivia is the prettiest I think but maybe to similar to Orla. I would choose Heidi for that reason. Not keen on Lana. I chose a common name for my daughter but have never come across another one at school etc. I noticed a lot of people were put off Olivia for the common reason on your post.

intrepidgiraffe · 19/04/2025 21:16

Of those three I like Heidi, partly because I’m not a fan of siblings names ending in the same sound which the other two do. Also think Olivia is too popular.

Absolutely Heidi ❤️

CheeseWisely · 19/04/2025 21:53

I liked Heidi if we’d had a girl but we have a friend with a 3 year old Heidi, wouldn’t have ruled it out entirely but pushed it down our list a bit.

LilyJosephine · 19/04/2025 22:00

Of the 3 I think Lana is the nicest fit with Orla. I don’t think the “anal” thing is a big deal - I’m sure before the name Orla became so popular, teenagers probably teased with “oral”, many names can be made fun of if kids are that immature. Though I like the sound of Lara or Alana even more.

Alana and Orla are a great sibset though- both pretty, short/simple Irish origin names. I’d use the simpler Alana spelling unless you’ve got a good reason not to, as statistically it’s by far the most commonplace one out of Alana/Alanna/Alannah so it should make her life a bit easier.

12doublerolls · 19/04/2025 22:09

I have an alana. I wanted Lana but thought it was a bit informal on the bc so went with Alana but her names mostly shortened to Lana. It’s a beautiful name. Not keen on Heidi I think it’s the sounds and Olivia just seems overdone.

What has your experience been having an Alana? Have people commented on her name? I’m really coming around to Alana/Alanna! Love it’s meaning and the way it sounds

Edited

If you don’t want it pronounced ‘Al-AY-na, I’d go with the double n — Alanna or Alannah.

LetTheWindBlowBackYourHair · 23/04/2025 11:07

Congratulations! How exciting!

Lana is very lovely, as is Alana/Alanna, I knew an Alana and she was one of the loveliest people I ever met. Lara is very lovely too.

Heidi - big fan of this name and it was a favourite of mine, but i had boys.

Olivia - is a very pretty lovely name but so very popular, I think the most popular name, that would put me off.

I vote Lana or Alana.
