So husband and I have only one name between us that we agree on: Darcy. I love it but recently the thought of arsey popped into my head. We live in Scotland if that has any bearing. I am English but husband is Scottish. Am I overthinking it and it’s still a nice name or is it definitely going to haunt us? If you say it’s a bad idea please suggest an alternative as we are really back to the drawing board after discussing names for months! 😭

Nobody is going to hear arse,

Hysterectomynext · 16/04/2025 10:20

I love it. My friend has a Darcy and she’s lovely. But I loved the name already because of Darcey Bussell
congratulations!

I’m in Scotland and know a little Darcy. Never occurred to me to think ‘Arsey’! I don’t think kids of today really use stuff like that as insults anyway, it’s a bit too old school!

LavenderBlue19 · 16/04/2025 10:21

My friend has a child called Darcey. It's a lovely name, I had never thought of arsey. Children will make a cruel name out of anything though, you can't escape it whatever you name your child. If it's not the first name it's the surname, if it's not the name it's their looks. It's unavoidable.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/04/2025 10:27

My friend has a toddler called this - I wouldn’t pick it myself , but if you like it that’s all that matters-

Yeah it's a bit 80s playground isn't it? Kids are far too sophisticated these days to do rhyming swears 😀

My friends granddaughter is Darcy. It's a lovely name . I don't know what you mean by being Scottish has to do with it though.

Not saying being Scottish has anything to do with it. Just thought I’d mention it because I’m not Scottish myself and certain things sound better/worse in different parts of the UK and some names are more/less popular in different parts.

I'm called Darcy. Yes Ive been nicknamed arsed when in school or people have shortened it to Darce which I hate. But I don't hate my name

Wintersdream93 · 16/04/2025 10:43

Arsey*

GameOfJones · 16/04/2025 10:44

I really like the name but to me, Darcey is the way to spell it for a girl. Darcy is the version also used for boys and more common as a surname spelling. Just personal preference though.

Berlinlover · 16/04/2025 10:44

I immediately think of the word arse when I hear the name Darcy, how can you not? It would be a definite no from me.

Ah I was just wondering, I'm scottish and I say it just as is.

HugoYorway · 16/04/2025 11:12

@Airwaterfire ? It’s been a name long before Darcey Bussell, so how is it celebrity inspired? A beautiful ballerina as a panellist on prime time TV, coincided with a boom in popularity of the name.

It was a surname and compares to something like Shirley.

Pyjamatimenow · 16/04/2025 11:14

Sounds very masculine to me. Can’t say I like it

unlikelywitch · 16/04/2025 11:18

I’m in the west of Scotland and Darcy had a moment in the 2010s where it was quite popular, so for me it feels a bit dated. I also think it sounds slightly harsh in our accent.

Other suggestions -

Eve or Evie
Nora
Maeva
Ailsa
Eilidh
Blair
Anya
Eilis
Rowan

That’s a good point op: it does sound a bit harsher with the accent.

HugoYorway · 16/04/2025 11:21

@Pyjamatimenow , same here. I never saw the appeal of Tracey, but ar least it doesn't make me think Arsey.

CheeseAndHamToastieAndCrisps · 16/04/2025 11:38

I don’t like it at all sorry. All the Darcys I meet are always Darcy-Mai/Rose and where I live it gets screeched across the playground as Darc-eh!

4pink1blue · 16/04/2025 11:38

I have a 13 year old Darcy and she's never been called arsey (even though, as a teenager, she frequently is!)

BabyRuthless · 16/04/2025 11:59

This is my Niece's name. She's never had any kind of bullying that I'm aware of. She's a popular girl, no one has picked on her for her name. Never heard or even thought of arsey darcey! She is a Darcie, rather than a Darcey though.

Pregnantandscrewed · 16/04/2025 12:03

Ahh gosh, it’s a few mixed bag isn’t it. I think you either hear it (and can’t unhear it) or it just doesn’t stand out to you. I think I’ll have to have a chat with the husband and see what he thinks. I will probably put him off the name now. So please keep suggestions coming. I do love a few already suggested but husband is way more difficult than me it seems!

I and many others don't, so seemingly, very easily.

Yes, it’s very strange. I think you either automatically think it or you don’t.
