Me and DH are having trouble naming our son - I liked Ashton he doesn’t, he likes Carter but I’m not sold on it.

Therefore (frustratingly!), we may go back to the drawing board, I’m asking for help - what do you think of these names?

And also, does anyone have any other suggestions of one or two syllable names?

Thanks!

I don’t like Niall, I prefer Nile - is this not the way to spell it? Isn’t Niall the Irish spelling?

@untitled1 He'll be called the river Nile all his life so stick to the classic spelling of Niall. Please don't tell me that you didn't know there was a river called Nile!

A couple of kids in my wider social circle:
Kit - his full name is Christopher
Claude
Zachary
Xavier
Micah
Matthew - nn Matty
James
Max
Rafael
Adam
Rory

I just googled Cameron and don’t like that it means ‘crooked nose’ in Gaelic 😔

Surely crooked nose in another language is better than Carter meaning someone who hauls stuff around in a cart in the same language!

FiveBarGate · 17/04/2025 18:53

I'd want to put 'under-lyne' after Ashton but I'm assuming you don't live near Manchester to be considering it.

Cameron is by far the nicest of your options.

Anyone else remember Carter unstoppable sex machine band from the 90s? That's all I think of when I hear that name but it's a very niche reference.

I was thinking exactly that. Tho it dates me

Emanwenym · 17/04/2025 18:55

Brilliant! Is that near Chapel-Henry-the-Fifth?

@ZepherinDrouhinpf course I’ve heard of the river lol, I just feel as he isn’t Irish the other spelling seems a bit weird?!

I love a surname-name (very un-mn!) I would add Fletcher or Parker

YourChirpyFatball · 17/04/2025 19:19

Orwell
Starmer
Huxley

Hollieandtheivie · 17/04/2025 21:27

Morgan. Has that been said?

Cameron is lovely imho.
Much prefer it to your earlier suggestions.

The anglicised spelling of Niall is Neil, OP.

In fact that’s how the name Niall is pronounced in the Irish language too, the same way Neil is.
However, most Irish people actually use the anglicised pronunciation of Niall, which is Nigh-ul. I haven’t seen it spelt Nile, except for the river. Niles is a male name though, like the character in Frasier.

It’s complicated 😁

SnowFrogJelly · 18/04/2025 00:58

Carton?

Needspaceforlego · 18/04/2025 01:04

What about Dean?

ThesebeautifulthingsthatIvegot · 18/04/2025 01:41

Caleb
Tate
Lyle
Miles
Milo?

Nile spelt that way seems odd to me, even though I know of Nile Wilson, who definitely spells it that way.

Pandimoanymum · 18/04/2025 01:59

Don’t like either of the original suggestions.
Callum or Cameron much better.
Huxley and Tate keep coming up, please no. Huxley makes me think of Huxley Pig ( I may be showing my age here) and Tate just make me think of Andrew. Nobody wants to be reminded of him.
Niall is nice. Nile is not.
Connor is ok.

untitled1 · 18/04/2025 02:55

@Pandimoanymumi agree about Tate which is ashame as it’s a nice name.

Nile is the River

starlight94 · 18/04/2025 07:16

I love the name Cameron!

Mugcake · 18/04/2025 08:42

Cameron is so nice!
If you're still looking what about:
Huxley
Jude
Finn
Cole
Christopher
Simon
Saul

untitled1 · 18/04/2025 09:08

@Mugcakei quite like Cole! I also like Jude but it does remind me of Bellingham and the Beatles a bit too much

I’ve added Cole to shortlist

I really hope DH goes with Cameron as I’ve not had anyone yet say it’s a bad name. We even tested on both sides of the family to get positive replies!

our other names have been a bit like marmite lol

he also looks like Cameron

OP posts:
Sal17690 · 18/04/2025 09:19

Nile is a river. Please don't do that!

names that give me the same vibe as Ashton and Carter:

parker
lincoln
owen
connor
logan
hunter
levi
Ryder
hudson
cooper
declan
mason

however Cameron is definitely a great choice

Serraphina · 18/04/2025 09:49

Ignatius (Iggy for short)
Aloysius (Alo for short)
Cornelius (Con for short)
Lorenzo (Enzo for short)

Emanwenym · 18/04/2025 09:54

I'll throw in Ludovic (Ludo) and Casimir (Cas)
