Me and DH are having trouble naming our son - I liked Ashton he doesn’t, he likes Carter but I’m not sold on it.

Therefore (frustratingly!), we may go back to the drawing board, I’m asking for help - what do you think of these names?

And also, does anyone have any other suggestions of one or two syllable names?

Thanks!

Anyone else remember Carter unstoppable sex machine band from the 90s? That's all I think of when I hear that name but it's a very niche reference.

I didn’t realise Cameron was Scottish and we are not Scottish! Which makes me feel a little weird using it or am I being silly?!

Tbf both Jimbob and Fruitbat are 2 syllable names.

These threads always make me laugh as both my sons, my husband and my brother’s names are on here! My parents clearly like surnames as first names way back in the 80s!

OP, my eldest is Carter - my husband is Scottish and we don’t live in UK so no “chavvy” connotations alluded to above.

Also really like Ashton so I don’t think you can go wrong!

I quite like Carter but like Cooper I think it works better in American accents

Ashton I think is a bit more High School cheesy and not great anywhere

Cameron is quite nice, although I prefer Callum.

I quite like Walker, Harris is quite popular and that’s OK too. Austen?

Cameron was very popular in the 1990s.
Babies called Cameron in England & Wales since 1996

In Scotland (not included in the graph) it was every other boy'sbaby names s name back then.

They are both pretty awful choices unless you are in the US. In the UK they are both pretty chavy.

I’d get the names book out again and start by crossing off the awful ones first. You’ll be surprised how small your shortlist is after doing that.

This was also my first thought when I heard Carter. Showing my age as a 90s indie kid

Cameron is much nicer imo! Still fits your surname as a first name brief but is lovely as an actual name. I really like the nn Cam too.

We are also considering Nile, any thoughts??

OP posts:
Emanwenym · 17/04/2025 17:47

Would be a good middle name for River

Reddelilah · 17/04/2025 18:12

How about Niall?

Moreteaandchocolate · 17/04/2025 18:20

Cameron or Niall are lovely :)

Emanwenym · 17/04/2025 18:24

i like Niall but it it 'Nigh-ul' or 'Neel'?

untitled1 · 17/04/2025 18:32

I don’t like Niall, I prefer Nile - is this not the way to spell it? Isn’t Niall the Irish spelling?
